This carries over into Vietnam’s startup scene. The mentality is that untapped markets and opportunities are ripe for the picking.

4. People are wily: There’s a saying in Vietnam that goes to the tune of “laws are as numerous as a jungle but the people follow the laws of the jungle.” In other words, despite the hurdles and minefields of Vietnam’s legal and political system, people still build hugely successful companies. Despite Vietnam’s so-called corruption, it’s local companies still seem to build into very successful corporations. This comes out of a practical business mentality from the younger and older entrepreneurs in all industries.

Although the e-commerce market in Japan makes up only 3% of the retail market, what makes Whytelist special and possibly appealing to people outside Japan is the site design is reflective of an actual physical store, which does not stray away from the typical shopping experience in real life. Also, Whytelist heavily features many of the Japanese fashion trends and can attract people who are interested in Japanese fashion.

But with more than 10,000 buzzing entrepreneurial “blogshops” in Singapore selling goods like clothes, electronics and food items online, it would be interesting to see how Whytelist can leverage off the massive e-commerce activity in Singapore and expand globally.

Both: Some companies have decided to address both needs. And why not? MyRideBuddy and ShareTransport.sg are not just offering carshare and cabshare mobile solutions, they operate web services as well. ShareTransport.sg appears to have had a good start: It claims on its website to have signed up 8,800 members since March 2012. It even has a bus sharing service.

Singapore residents seems open to ridesharing. The high cost of car ownership, which is unlikely to abate, could ensure a strong demand for carpooling. Taxi fares in Singapore are not cheap either. Singaporeans generally feel safe living in the city, and that aids trust-building.

There have been over 2,500 laptops, computers, and LCD projectors assembled by the SMKN 3 Mataram students over three years so far. Kompas cites Dewi Prasetyo, an 11th grader at SMKN 3 Mataram as saying that she has assembled around 100 electronic units. It usually takes around 15 to 20 minutes to assemble one unit.

The students are also taught to provide professional “after-sales service” for every assembled units. The students’ serial number is inscribed for each unit they assemble, so every malfunctioning unit will be given back to the designated student to be fixed.
