Israeli QR Code Merging Service Visualead Raised $1.6 Million Series A Funding

Visualead, an Israeli visual QR code and mobile page design platform, announced that it has secured $1.6 million in Series A funding from a consortium of internet and digital media venture capitalists, led by Kaedan Capital and Entrée Capital.

The funds are being allocated to boost the growth of Visualead’s “Do-it-Yourself” platform. Furthermore, the funds will be used to increase distribution of its white label solutions and execute its worldwide IP strategy.

Founded in 2012, Visualead sets out to help businesses attract and interact with their customers. It aims to make the ugly QR code more palatable by making it invisible with a technology which eliminates the looks of standard QR codes by around 70%. Using proprietary technology, Visualead developed a platform that lets any business to quickly merge QR codes into any design or advertisement in just a few simple steps to draw potential customers into an optimized mobile experience (watch video here).

Visualead’s platform is now being used by 200,000 small- and medium-sized businesses worldwide to promote their business offline, generating over 30,000 visual QR codes and mobile page campaigns per month. Nevo Alva, founder and CEO of Visualead, claimed that the platform can increase campaign ROI by up to 400%.

Started from European and US markets, Visualead planned to spear headways to Asian markets which are experiencing an exponential growth in smartphone usage and QR code scanning. The targeted Asian markets include China, Singapore, Japan, and Korea.

Maichang, a Mobile Karaoke App, Received 15 Million Yuan of Series A Financing

Mobile karaoke app Maichang reportedly received 15 million yuan ($2.44 million) of Services A Financing from Touch Wood (source in Chinese).

Targeted at grassroots music fans, Maichang differs from other karaoke apps in that it is more of a group networking community, because the app encourages users to play in teams consisted of family members. The singing competitions held by Maichang, which also take families as contestant units, provide opportunities for them to communicate and share experiences, said Liu Jian, founder of the company.

Maichang planned to enrich the audio contents and add anecdotes sharing as well as dancing videos to their services, said Liu. Maichang will add more gamification features to increase user engagement.

Maichang has around 8 million registered users and 700,000 daily active users, disclosed Liu. Similar domestic companies are Changba, Karaoke Master and Audiocn.

Online edu-training startup Simplilearn gets $10 million funding

Indian online education and training startup Simplilearn has raised $10 million in series B funding from Helion Venture Partners and Kalaari Capital.

It’s quite incredible progress for Simplilearn, which started as a blog in 2009 to share ideas on project management and act as a point of sharing information to young aspiring project management professionals (PMPs). Now it’s one of the most global Indian startups.

Today, Simplilearn has expanded its focus beyond PMPs and has added other areas like agile and scrum certification, IT service management, big data and cloud computing, IT security management, finance management, quality management, and certification for SAP, Microsoft, and Cisco.

According to Rajesh Raju, Kalaari Capital’s managing director, since Simplilearn’s inception it has grown at a rate of 400 percent and has outpaced that growth since Kalaari’s investment early last year. “We envision a global leadership position for the company in catering to individuals and corporates in a variety of certification areas,” Raju adds.

Taobao Opens up Social Shopping Platform UZ to Everyone

Taobao announced to open up its social shopping platform, UZ, to everyone. UZ used to be only available for third-party social shopping services. Now anyone can set up and run a mini-site there. At the same time Alibaba, Taobao’s parent company, announced to input $500 million to help build UZ ecosystem.

Social shopping sites emerged in China in the past couple of years. Meilishuo and Mogujie stood out as the two most well-known players. The majority of their revenues were from Taobao where most Chinese online retailers are doing business, with a minor part from in-site advertising.

It is reported that Alibaba wasn’t happy with large third-party social shopping services, such as Meilishuo and Mogujie, took advantage of Taobao ecosystem, receiving CPS/CPC-based commissions from Taobao retailers. Alibaba would prefer to see more smaller players in the ecosystem.

Juhuasuan is a similar platform within Taobao that aggregates group-buying services. Such platforms could have users stay forever within Tabao ecosystem and buy goods only from Taobao retailers. The competition within the ecosystem will bring Taobao revenues through display advertising or paid searches.

SNS Web Douban Launched Social Shopping Service Dongxi

Douban, a leading Chinese social network website, released today a social shopping channel named Dongxi. The service is only available for invited members now, but it will open up to everyone in mid-October (report in Chinese).

Users can browse, comment and share various products, such as consumer electronics, cosmetics, foods and garments, on the dedicated platform. Users who want to purchase a certain product will be redirected to other e-commerce platforms, including Taobao, Tmall, JD, Yihaodian, Amazon, Etsy, etc. Douban planned to monetize the service by collecting commissions from cooperation ecommerce platforms.

Ride-sharing platform Tripid has launched a new version, with native iOS and Android apps in tow. Plus, users get a built-in payment system.

Transportation is one of the essential things in our lives. Whether you live in the city or farther away in the suburbs, having a reliable means of commuting around town is essential, especially if you want to arrive at your destination in comfort and in style. In Manila, killer traffic can often turn a 20-minute drive into two hours of hell, especially in inclement weather. One of the ways by which I think traffic can be reduced is through ride sharing, which is exactly what local startup Tripid is doing.

In our earlier interview with Tripid co-founder and CEO Michael Ngo Dee, he shared that his startup essentially improves utilization of a resource that’s already existing: private vehicles. We often see solo drivers plying the city’s streets, which means cars are under-utilized. Meanwhile, commuters are left to compete with other riders for space in the MRT, buses or jeepneys. Those who can afford it can take taxi cabs. But let’s face it — taking the cab can be expensive if you commute to and from work every day.

Tripid tries to match vehicle owners with commuters, such that they can carpool and share their resources. Drivers get to share a seat with fellow travelers. Commuters can then share a nominal amount for fuel expenses — certainly cheaper than paying for a cab. Of course, the added value here is that riding a private car can be safer and more enjoyable, especially if you are able to find reliable carpool-buddies whom you can ride with on a regular basis.
