The premise is simple. The Snaptee application — currently available for iOS devices — lets you tweak your photos and have these printed out as t-shirt designs. You can have your shirt printed and shipped to you for $19.99 apiece. The team ships worldwide for the same price.

The app has six filters and 20 templates to choose from, and lets you adjust color and brightness values for the most creative effect. Going beyond printing your own shirts, Snaptee also offers a platform for sharing your designs with the world. Other buyers can order your shirt design for US$24.99 apiece.

We got in touch with co-founder Wai-Lun Hong, who told e27 that Snaptee is all about creativity. “With Snaptee, we bring down the barrier to an unprecedented low level. Imagine in 30 seconds, with your iPhone, you can finish designing a slogan tee with a picture you took of golden gate bridge, and it will ship to your home for just $19.99. To me, I think its amazing, and our team are set to make it happen!”

共同創業者Wai-Lun Hongと話す機会があった。いわく、Snapteeにとって一番大事なのは創造性であるとのことだ。「Snapteeで、障壁をいまだかつてない水準まで下げたんだ。想像してごらん。iPhoneがあれば、スローガンと自分が撮影したゴールデンゲートブリッジの写真を組み合わせたデザインが簡単にできる。そしてたった19.99ドルで自宅まで送ってくれるんだ。僕はこれは凄いことだと思っている。僕たちのチームは、必ずこれを実現するんだという意欲で燃えているよ！」

Snaptee also lets users “remix” others’ designs, which have been made publicly shared. This results in somewhat a collaborative output. I asked whether the team envisions Snaptee to become an e-commerce platform for shirt designers, and Wai-Lun said this is a possibility, but not yet their priority. “The top priority of us is to create a culture that people really enjoy designing fashionable t-shirt for themselves. Remix is one of the feature we know people love.”

Snapteeでは、公開されている他のユーザーのデザインと「リミックス」することも可能だ。この結果できるものは、コラボレーションされたものと言える。Snapteeをシャツデザイナー向けのECプラットフォームにしていくビジョンはあるのか尋ねてみた。可能性はあるが、現時点で優先度は高くないとWai-Lunは語る。「最優先なのは、みんなが自分のためにステキなTシャツをデザインする事を楽しんでくれることだね。その意味で、リミックスは絶対みんな楽しんでくれるものだと確信している」

One concern I brought up was the potential for intellectual property rights infringement, and the Snaptee team seems to be well aware of this. “Generally, we remove anything violate IP rights, that include direct copying of logo and brands. While remixing others design is another story that we need to work on, but generally speaking, we respect IP right and try to avoid any party’s right being offended.”

[LAUNCHPAD] Gates2Asia Pitches a Groupon for SME Businesses

Founded in March last year, Gates2Asia (G2A) is a B2B cooperative buying sites for international based SME’s to buy directly from low cost Asian suppliers like China. Essentially it is like a Groupon for SMEs, meaning when teaming up with other SMEs to buy the same things in bulk it leads to lower costs and greater competitiveness.

昨年3月に立ち上がったGates2Asia (G2A)は、低コストで中国をはじめアジアのサプライヤーから直接買い付けしたい、グローバル領域でビジネス展開をする中小企業向けのB2B共同購買サイトだ。端的に言うと、中小企業向けのGrouponだ。すなわち、他の中小企業と共同で同じ物を、バルク価格で買い付けるという仕組みだ。より競争力のある低価格で。

Although the site is still in beta and will officially launch in August this year, Founder and CEO Kenneth Chan has big hopes for G2A. Self-funded with a team of 5, Chan wants to help the little SME guy be as competitive as their larger competitors that have sophisticated supply chains and relationships to low cost Asian suppliers. You could argue that this is what Jack Ma did with Alibaba, but businesses like G2A have mixed in cooperative buying to make purchasing even cheaper. Chan says the biggest problems for international SMEs when buying from China is that they are uncomfortable with the process including language, customs, shipping, how to pay, taxes etc.

サイトはまだベータリリースで、今年の8月に公式オープン予定である。創設者兼CEOのKenneth ChanにはG2Aに対する楽観しかない。自己資本のみ、そしてたった5名のメンバーにて、Chanたちは中小企業を、優れたサプライチェーンと低コストなアジア圏のサプライヤーとのリレーションを持ち合わせた大企業の競合たちと、対等にしたいと考えている。Jack MaがAlibabaでやったこととある意味同じといえるかもしれない。ただ、G2Aは共同購入という要素を取り入れることで、購買を更に安くしようとしている。Chanいわく、グローバル領域でビジネス展開する中小企業にとって最大の問題は、中国から購入するときとのこと。言語、通関、配送、支払い、税金など、複雑なプロセスが山積みだからだ。

二つ目は「信頼関係を築くこと」だと思います。今は私自身の語学力不足で言語の壁があっても、まず相手に興味を持つことが私の友好の意思を示す手段だと思います。しかし本当にお互いが理解し合うことができなければ信頼関係は生まれません。理解し合うことはコミュニケーションができなければ難しいです。このことを肝に銘じ、語学力の向上にむけて英語の勉強を日々の生活の中に取り入れていこうと思います。

Second is to build trust with each other. For now, my English is poor. But at least showing my interest towards them must be the best way to show my fondness. But trust could be only built through mutual understanding. Without communication, understanding each other is difficult. From now on, I will keep this in mind and take in English learning process in everyday work so my English gets better.

これからの私たちにとって必要なことは、まず一つは社長が言われていた「国際感覚を持つこと」だと思います。それについて私が思う具体的なことはやはり語学習得だと思います。英語が話すことができれば視野が広がり、たくさんの人と話すことができます。相手の国の文化を知ることで自分の中の常識にとらわれることなく、物事を判断できるようになると思います。また、会食の後にALLENに案内をしてもらって外灘地区の夜景を見に行きました。そこはライトアップされた建物が並び幻想的な光景でした。

What we should do from now on? First, to keep in mind that we live in a global age, like our president said. I think that doing that in reality would be learning other languages. If I could speak English, I would have a wider view, and be able to talk with more people. I would be able to judge things better by understanding another country's culture, not my own viewpoint.
After a meal, Allen showed us the night view of Bund. Buildings were lightened up in the dark, and it was a magical view.

ところが、私が英語で話そうとしても私の語学力不足で自分の意思を相手に伝えることができず困りました。また、彼女たちの中にも英語を話せないスタッフもおり、中国語の通訳を通さないと話すことができない場面もありました。確かに英語は世界共通ですが、中国に私たちの代理店がある以上、私たちは現地の言葉でのコミュニケーションも必要だと思いました。

But when I tried to talk in English, I could not communicate enough because my English wasn't good enough. Some of them could not speak English as well, and there were times when we couldn't communicate without a Chinese interpreter. Yes, English is a universal language, but since we have our agency in China, we need to communicate in local language as well.

私たちは2/25-2/26に実施された研修旅行で上海を訪れました。
最近の中国の経済成長は著しく、今や先進国と肩を並べる程になっていると言われています。その渦中にある上海を訪れることは興味があり、現地の人と交流することは、私たちが携わっている通関という業務の向上にあたりとても必要なことだと思いました。

We visited Shanghai for the training program trip on Feb 25-26.
Economic development in the recent years is so drastic that China could be named as one of the advanced nations. Visiting one of the core cities such as Shanghai was very interesting. Having the opportunity to communicate with native people were very important for us working at customs clearance.
First, I talked with Angel, Jane and Lili who are staffs of SHANGHAI JET GLOBAL CORPORATION.

LinkedIn Records 25 Million Users in APAC, Grew By 25 Percent

20 million was the number of LinkedIn (NYSE:LNKD) users in Asia Pacific (APAC) last publicly announced. Just four months later, today, the figure has grown by 25 percent to 25 million. We were told that four million of the users originate from Southeast Asia. Singapore, though small, boosts about 700,000 members island-wide. The growth in Southeast Asia was likely triggered by LinkedIn’s recent language localization move, which provides users with LinkedIn in Indonesian, Bahasa Malaysia, and Korean languages.

There aren’t any plans for China so far, as Arvind Rajan, managing director and VP for Asia Pacific and Japan, said last week at coffee chat session at Startups in Asia 2012 (Singapore). But he did, however, shared that LinkedIn in China is growing as more Chinese are using the tool for hiring. There are more than one million LinkedIn users in China so far.

And for Japan, LinkedIn will have an engineering office specially for the Japanese language, which highlights LinkedIn dedication towards localization. Arvind explained in our discussion last week:

India makes up the vast majority of the networks users in Asia, with over 13 million users, according to LinkedIn’s own ad tool.
