Speaking with Freelancer about its Biggest Investment Ever, Indonesia [Interview]

Recently Freelancer.com launced its Indonesian version at Freelancer.co.id. The company now provides Indonesian language support, a local customer service team, a concierge team, and local currency support. Freelancer is targeting 100,000 users in the country by the end of this year, and 400,000 by next year. For now, Indonesian users still just comprise 1.5 percent of the four million Freelancer.com users worldwide. The primary reason for this has been the lack of Indonesian language support – but that’s now available.

We chatted with the vice president of growth for Freelancer, Willix Halim, to learn more about the company’s expansion in Indonesia. Since we also saw some complaints from Freelancer.com users about suspended accounts and money withdrawals, we asked him to clarify this issue as well.

Do you think not having Indonesian language until now was really be an obstacle to aspiring Freelancer users?

Willix: For any Indonesian graduates, they should be very fluent in English already. We have 70,000 freelancers in Indonesia, and none of them are having trouble in speaking English. I think Indonesian language support is for entrepreneurs, in case they don’t know how to speak English. [For example] if they are in textile industry and doesn’t really speak English, that’s why we provide this for them. But for freelancers, i’m sure everyone would be able to speak English.

今までインドネシア語をサポートしてこなかったことは、Freelancerユーザーをひきつける妨げだったと思いますか？

Willix氏：インドネシアの大学卒業生達は、すでに英語に精通しているはずです。インドネシアには7万人のフリーランサーがいますが、英語に困っている人はいません。インドネシア語のサポートは、起業家の中の英語を話せない人に向けたものだと思います。（例えば）繊維工業の起業家で英語をあまり話せない場合などが、私どもがこのサポートを提供する理由です。フリーランサーは皆、確実に英語が話せると私は思います。

Are the job postings to be made in Indonesian?

Willix: So there are two job post [areas] in Freelancer.co.id: one is in Indonesian, one is in English. So people from Indonesia can still bid on projects in English. Apart from local job postings, there are also job posts from around the world giving more opportunities for freelancers to bid.

Willix：Freelancer.co.idには2つの求人欄があります。1つはインドネシア語で、もう1つは英語です。ですから、インドネシアの人々は英語で書かれたプロジェクトに引き続き入札できます。地元の求人票以外にも、世界中からの求人がフリーランサーにより多くの機会を与えています。

Do you have an office in Indonesia yet?

Willix: Unfortunately, we don’t have a physical address here. In the upcoming months, we definitely will have one. We really want to expand here. I’m a big believer in Indonesia. I was born in Indonesia and big things are definitely happening here. Facebook is coming to Indonesia, Rocket Internet and even Rakuten is. So yeah, this is where the tech boom is going to be.

Willix：残念ですが、私どもはここに物理的な住所は持っていません。数か月のうちに持つつもりではいます。この地で本当に事業を展開したいのです。私はインドネシアの可能性を心から信じています。私はインドネシアに生まれ、大きな出来事がここで進行中なのは確かです。Facebookはインドネシアに進出してきますし、Rocket InternetとRakutenでさえも進出してきています。ですから、ここがテックブームが起きる場所です。

What do you think are the most promising jobs that freelancers could do here in Indonesia?

Willix: I would imagine it is website building, sem, e-commerce. I believe that there are definitely a lot of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) here, as I said that 99.9 percent of all firms established in 2009 to 2010 are SMEs and most of them probably don’t know how to make a website.

Most industries are already digitized. If they haven’t, they will be digitized. Building websites, getting traffic for your website, and all of these jobs will be coming to Indonesia. That’s what we expect.

フリーランサーがここインドネシアでできる最も将来性のある仕事は何だと思われますか？

Willix氏：ウェブサイト構築、SEM、eコマースだと思います。数多くの中小企業がここには存在し、先ほど述べたように、2009年から2010年の間に設立された企業の99.9%は中小企業であり、おそらくそのほとんどがウェブサイトの作成方法を知らないと思います。

ほとんどの業界はすでにデジタル化されています。デジタル化されていないものは、デジタル化されるでしょう。ウェブサイトを構築したり、ウェブサイトに客を引き寄せたり、それら全ての仕事はインドネシアに来ることになります。それが私たちが期待していることです。

So it’s not about cheap labor?

Willix: Well, cheap is relative, right? In the US, building a website with $200 is cheap. But for us Indonesians, $200 is huge and you can finish the job in 3 days. So you can essentially earn up to $2,000 easily a month which is a really good money. It’s a really different thing.

How about illegal jobs in the site?

Willix: We’re making sure that the jobs posted are legal. We keep tracking them. We have 3,000 to 4,000 jobs posted a day. You can see how hard it is for us to sort every single project. But we try. For Freelancer.co.id, I’ve mentioned to my engineers to remove the ‘triple x’ projects. We are looking at it very extensively now. It’s a continuous process.

では、低賃金労働が目的ではないのですか？

Willix氏：低賃金というのは相対的なものでしょう？アメリカでは、$20でのウェブサイトの構築は安いです。しかし、私たちインドネシア人にとって、$200は大金であり、3日でその仕事を終えることができます。基本的に月に2千ドルは楽に稼げるということで、それはかなり良いお金です。全く違う話なのです。

サイトにおける非合法な仕事についてはどうですか？

The full effects of the economic crisis were felt in Portugal in 2008 and had an almost immediate impact on property investment. The misgivings of institutional investors, allied with the scarcity or virtual non-existence of funding for the property sector, had a severe effect on the market. After two years’ growth of around 30% in transactions,
2008 was down more than 60% over the preceding year,

Indonesian School Has Clever Way to Give Students Hands-on Time With Hardware

Here’s a nice story. There is an Indonesian vocational school called SMKN 3 Mataram. Its computer network engineering department doesn’t have enough budget to let its students practice assembling the different hardwares as a part of the school’s curriculum. Instead the school decided to receive orders from the regional government and Mataram University to assemble thousands of laptops, computers, and LCD projectors, enabling its students to learn first-hand about what it takes to become a professional engineer.

インドネシアの学校はハードウェアを使って体験活動時間を生徒に与える賢い手段を持っている

これは良い話である。SMKN 3 Mataramと呼ばれるインドネシアの専門学校がある。そのコンピューターネットワーク工学部は、学校のカリキュラムの一環として異なるハードウェアを組み立てる実習を生徒にさせるには予算が足りない。そこで同校は地方政府とMataram大学から注文を受け、何千ものノートブック、コンピューター、LCDプロジェクターを組み立てることにし、生徒たちにプロのエンジニアになるために必要な能力を直接体験で学ばせることを可能にした。

There have been over 2,500 laptops, computers, and LCD projectors assembled by the SMKN 3 Mataram students over three years so far. Kompas cites Dewi Prasetyo, an 11th grader at SMKN 3 Mataram as saying that she has assembled around 100 electronic units. It usually takes around 15 to 20 minutes to assemble one unit.

The students are also taught to provide professional “after-sales service” for every assembled units. The students’ serial number is inscribed for each unit they assemble, so every malfunctioning unit will be given back to the designated student to be fixed.

これまで3年の間に、2,500台以上のノートブック、コンピューター、LCDプロジェクターがSMKN 3 Mataramの生徒達によって組み立てられた。インドネシアの新聞Kompasは、SMKN 3 Mataramの11年生Dewi Prasetyoさんが約100台の電子機器を組み立てたという話題を取り上げている。1台組み立てるのに、15分から20分くらいかかるのが普通である。

生徒達は組み立てた機器すべてに対して、プロの「購入後のアフターサービス」を提供することも教えられている。生徒が組み立てた機器にはそれぞれ生徒番号が刻まれているので、故障の際の修理時にはそれぞれ担当の生徒に機器が送り返される。

The finished products will then be sold as the government’s subsidized products to other vocational schools located in the Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB) province. The government also gives away some of the electronic units to the schools in remote areas.

The school also offers similar incentivized class practices to its other departments, such as welding and carpentry. For its production-based teaching programs, SMKN 3 Mataram has been included as one of Indonesia’s 90 international-level vocational schools.

Tenpay Partners With Weixin: Launching QR Code Payment and Shake-It Transfer

On the 7th anniversary of Tenpay(the online payment service by Tencent), the GM of the company announced that the company would start collaboration with Tencent’s IM service Weixin and its B2C arm. This 7-year-old company (founded in April 2005) currently has over 190 million users, partnering with about 400,000 merchants covering games, travels, B2C, insurance, steel, funds and cross-border industries. The services it provides include installment, entrustment, Epos payment, quick pay, and in 2011 its online trading volume reached over RMB 450billion.

On this special occasion, manager Lai Zhiming pointed out five specific moves that will be taken soon by Tenpay: 1. Get available to more Tencent’s core services; 2. Deepen partnership with Weixin; 3. Dig in the payment market; 4. Expand overseas O2O payment; 5. Connect with QQ Caibei’s platform.

The second one easily caught our eyes, for Weixin is such a popular star these days that everyone would like to take a share with it. This month, Tencent leader Pony Ma posted on his Weibo that Weixin users had already surpassed 200million. Actually the great thing about partnering with Weixin is more than its huge user base, the open platform and multifunction of Weixin can create incredible opportunities for Tenpay.

この特別な機会に、マネージャーのLai Zhiming氏はTenpayが近日中に取る明確な5つの動きを提示した。1.Tencentの主要サービスにより対応する。2.Weixinとの提携を深める。3.決済市場に専念する。4.O2O（オフライン・ツー・オフライン）決済の海外進出。5. QQ Caibeiのプラットフォームへの接続。

According to Lai, Tenpay will first combine itself with some basic functions of Weixin including “Shake-It”(Adding friends by shaking the phones at the same time), “QR Code Scanning”(Originally used for adding friends on Weixin) and “Wei Life”(Discount platform for life services). He introduced that after the collaboration, users could transfer to friends by “Shake-It” instead of inputting the long account number digit by digit. Also, purchasing and payment could be much easier through the “QR Code Scanning”, and the same thing could also be realized on Tencent’s “Wei Life” platform where various merchants discounts are offered.

“Weixin+Tenpay=A new payment concept. We are trying to create an ideal that you can do anything with your phone. In the future Tenpay will develop more payment methods and functions accordingly. ” said Lai.

Pony Ma said on the 2012 China Internet Conference recently that “The opportunity for the mobile internet is O2O.” The QR Scanning seems to be the key entrance for a O2O mode.
