“I had an insight that the materials teachers created night after night had monetary value, so I set out to create a marketplace called Teachers Pay Teachers,” Edelman told Mashable. “Teachers are now making a pretty significant supplemental income and creating higher quality materials.”

During the first two years of Teachers Pay Teachers, teachers would pay for the lesson plans they wanted to use, though many would then be reimbursed by their schools. On Wednesday, Teachers Pay Teachers launched a purchased orders option, which allows schools to purchase several lesson plans directly for their teachers.

Edelman expects schools will become the primary buyers with the new purchasing option.

Teachers Pay Teachers focuses on lesson plans for pre-K through 12th-grade classrooms. The most popular subjects are English and language arts, science, social studies and math.

The site has about 700,000 registered users, of whom 10,000 are sellers. Edelman estimates that of the sellers about 6,000 are earning money. The teachers earning money have so far earned $7 million selling their lesson plans, once Teachers Pay Teachers takes out its commission.

The teachers who sell lesson plans use social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. Edelman says Pinterest now drives more traffic to Teachers Pay Teachers than Facebook.

About 93% of sales come from the U.S., 5% come from Canada, 1% come from Australia and the remaining 1% come from the rest of the anglo-speaking world.

When it launched in December 2010, Lapar jumped into the burgeoning daily deals market, competing with the likes of disdus (now Groupon) and dealkeren (now livingsocial) but focusing only on discounts for food items. Business was brisk and it earned a vote of confidence from our own Rama Mamuaya for differentiating itself and focusing on just one category rather than selling discount coupons for everything under the sky. We wrote about Lapar a few times throughout 2011.

Lapar initially focused on Jakarta and Bandung and early last year it expanded to Surabaya. As of last week, Lapar.com had become a lifestyle site with an emphasis on food and health. Gone are the deals and the coupons, replaced with bits and pieces of news and articles about personal health and culinary tips.

If you thought the old Detik.com was an ugly looking website, somebody at Lapar managed to come with something worse. It’s like they decided to throw everything on a board and turn it into a website.

Many people on Twitter had been asking about Lapar’s new direction but the only response they receive was to wait until further notice. For those who asked about not being able to purchase deals anymore, they were told that the site no longer issues new coupons. There was supposed to be an announcement on the 15th last week. but the date came and went and the Twitter account stayed silent since the 10th of May.

We were told that while ownership has not changed hands, Lapar.com is actually being run by a new management. We’re looking to find out whether the change is due to the new management, an initiative from the founders, or both. We’ve reached out to the founders of Lapar but have yet to hear back from them.

From your journey as a startup founder to an investor, what is the biggest takeaway for you?

‘People’ are what make great startups, not ideas.

What attracted you to settle in Singapore and look for investment opportunities in the region?

The community. Singapore has a really strong community of entrepreneurs and developers helping each other out. I had the fortune of first seeing this at HackerSpace, then a few months later at SuperHappyDevHouse.

Quite honestly, not as refined as the valley on how to get to market. However, I see great potential across the region. A lot of entrepreneurs here are doing this for the first time, there isn’t the same platform of the valley, with an ecosystem of serial internet entrepreneurs and angel investors to help with mentoring and connections. I can feel some exciting changes coming over the horizon.

We have seen many products making the West to East move, but few in the other direction. Should startups here concentrate on the markets close to home or attempt to expand into the western markets? How can they do it better?

My bet is that startups should concentrate here on the markets close to home as the ‘low hanging fruit’. As the ecosystem matures, it will open up opportunities for competing in western markets.

In China, he invested in Xiaomi, which I believe is now a billion dollar company. He is also skeptical about funding mobile applications as he sees no exit in China. For him, only a few companies in China can compete globally. And guess what? He pointed Xiaomi as one. And he noted that Weixin (now WeChat) was another. It’s important to note that Weixin is part of Tencent. Bao Fan did point out others, including Dianping, Youku, Renren, and YY.
