I know it might sound like some corporate bullshit that Spotify was built to fight piracy. But thinking deeper, it actually makes sense. Spotify gets content from labels who in turn make money when people buy their music. But folks who download music from illegal sources – and at no cost – hurt the labels’ bottom line. So this makes piracy a common enemy for music labels and Spotify. The more people use Spotify, the higher the chance to convert them to paying users, thus driving revenue for music labels and also Spotify.

著作権侵害行為に立ち向かう目的でSpotifyを設立した考えは、戯言の様に聞こえる事は分かっているが、冷静に考えてみると、理にかなっている。つまりSpotifyは、レーベルからコンテンツを入手する代わりに、レーベルには、人が曲を購入するとお金が落ちる仕組みになっている。しかし、皆が、違法なソースから無料で曲をダウンロードすれば、結局はレーベルが損害を被るのだ。そのため、音楽レーベルにとってもSpotifyにとっても、著作権侵害行為は共通の敵なのだ。Spotifyの利用者が増えれば、著作権料をきちんと払うユーザーがそれだけ増える可能性もあり、音楽レーベル、そしてSpotifyの収益にも繋がることになる。

To date, Spotify has 24 million users with about 25 percent of them paying monthly. I guess if you can’t get 100 percent to pay for music, then it’s perhaps good enough to have 25 percent of them paying. But we’ll have to wait and see if that conversion rate from free to paid users also applies to the startup’s new venture in Asia.

In Asia, Spotify faces major competition from Taiwan’s KKBOX which claims to be the largest Chinese music library in the world with 10 million songs from 500 international labels.

Issues have released an official statement regarding the departure of drummer Case Snedecor. The band attributes the split to an overall "style and musical direction" disconnect, but they assure fans that they are not going anywhere. Though the song is set to appear on the group's upcoming album, Sunflower, it was originally written for a Vans in-store performance to promote frontman Christofer Drew's role in the documentary No Room For Rockstars. Drew premiered the track in the spring of 2012, and has performed it on several occasions since. Check out the cover art and track listing for Sunflower, which is set for release July 2, below.

Sunflower will be Never Shout Never's fifth full-length release in under four years. In addition to "Subliminal Messages," the band just debuted the studio version of another often-performed, but never released, track, "Good Times." Christofer Drew also recently unveiled a new solo song, "Delirious," from his upcoming EP. The EP, which marks the singer's second as a solo artist, is expected to drop later this year.

Does Path Have a Future in Indonesia?

Path, a social network that is only accessible through iPhone and Android devices, has been growing in popularity in Indonesia for its more-private circle of friends (unlike Facebook it limits its users to 150 friends).

But what about Facebook? Indonesia is famous for its Facebook frenzy; as the statistics above show, almost all internet users in Indonesia are Facebook users too. Some people say that Indonesians like to have as many connections as possible, which explains Facebook’s popularity, but Indonesian today are increasingly getting overwhelmed by the unknown brands and ubiquitous ads and promotions on their Facebook walls.

So when Path introduced its more private social network to Indonesian consumers, it is not surprising that Indonesians responded to it. When I asked friends what features they like most on Path, most of them said they liked to post photos and add what they are listening to, as the app’s “smart journal” concept easily lets users choose one of the following moments (photo/video, people, place, music, thought, sleep/awake) to share. That really is something new and different from Facebook.

But really, what makes posting a photo on Path so different from posting a photo on Instagram? Will they stop using Instagram, Foursquare,Twitter, Line, and Facebook once they start using Path?

So when an app becomes trendy, everyone installs it to see what their friends are saying there. But by the same token, if it becomes passe, that’s when it’s going to get uninstalled.

With the great number of social media users in Indonesia and the ingrained culture of Indonesian consumers installing new apps as their friends do, there is no doubt that Path can continue to grow here in the short term. The challenge for Path, and other emerging social apps, is to retain all these Indonesian users once it has got them and to prevent itself from being discarded when the next trendy social media site comes along and people’s friends start to move there.

Earlier reports have claimed that Apple's fifth-generation iPad will adopt many of the same design elements Apple adopted with the iPad mini, including a thinner bezel around the screen and more rounded edges. Those changes are expected to make the device 25 percent lighter and 15 percent thinner than its predecessor.

Among the internal changes expected is a "GF2" touch panel, which would make the touchscreen component of the iPad thinner. And improved power efficiency could also allow Apple to reduce the size of the iPad's internal battery, which currently accounts for most of the device's weight.

As of Thursday, May 16, Rolex have filed a multi-million dollar lawsuit against Forever The Sickest Kids frontman Jonathan Cook for selling counterfeit watches on Craigslist.Rolex report that they initially found five advertisements for replica watches on Craigslist, allegedly posted by Cook (screen shot of a listing from their claim below) last November, and pursued action via a private investigators who arranged transactions with Cook for the illegal products, of which Rolex say he claims there were 34.Rolex are asking for $2 million per offense, totaling in a theoretical $68 million should they find evidence of his attempting to distribute the claimed 34 watches.
