The program manager at Beijing-based Microsoft Research Asia, Wu Guobin, notes, “While it is still a research project, we ultimately hope this work can provide a daily interaction tool to bridge the gap between the hearing and the deaf and hard of hearing in the near future.”

Last year, Veritrans also worked with DailySocial to compile an Indonesian e-commerce market-focused research study. It noted that bank transfer, which referred to ATM payments, cashier payments or the transfer of funds electronically to another bank account, was “the most widely used method of payment for e-commerce”. In the last few months, Conyac evolved from a Japan-centered web service into a globally recognized translation brand. During our Summer Tour in Europe, we were pleasantly surprised to run into our satisfied users at various business events across the continent. For a startup that just began expanding to global markets a few weeks ago, this was a very nice compliment and encouragement for our future work.

After our presence at the ICT Spring Conference in Luxembourg last month, Conyac Team accepted an invitation to visit friends at a large tech corporation with its headquarters in Munich, Germany. We also took time to talk to other partners and customers, as well as student groups from LMU and TUM.

Large corporations didn’t leave enough room for lean entrepreneurship, and Munich’s startup scene doen'tt have much in common with entrepreneurial hubs in Bay Area, Tokyo and Singapore, places where Conyac Team executes most of its operations.

However, we were pleased to see that some organizations and students take initiative to build an environment where individuals with ideas can get consultations, feedback and help with implementation of their new businesses. One of such organizations is also UnternehmerTUM, which is informing young and prosperous entrepreneurs and organizing networking events. We participated at the UnternehmerTUM Entrepreneurs’ Night, presenting Conyac to young business and IT specialists.

The concept of the event was simple and direct; completely in line with German culture. Companies and individuals had an opportunity to promote themselves and their businesses and look for new opportunities and assistance. Every participant was required to state the purpose of their attendance in a few words, answering the questions “what do you need” and what do you offer”. This eased the exchange of information and after a few presentations (we were excited to see Uber’s Jena Wuu talk about taking their business to Munich, as our team regularly enjoys their transport service in San Francisco, as well as Singapore) the networking session felt like a quick and efficient ping-pong tournament.

There’s a lot of talk these days about where Asia stands with Silicon Valley, and I’ve certainly tackled this topic a lot, but maybe we need to shift the discussion into areas where the Valley is not touching. As Dave McClure mentioned to me last month, the phenomenon of large social media networks or platforms with millions of users that make no money is unique to the Valley. It’s unique to there in part because there’s enough risk-taking money to sustain cockamamy schemes of bright-eyed, daring young entrepreneurs.

Who’da thought you could build a business on top of that?

・SMS for a toilet – In Beijing, the municipal government is looking for ways to let citizens to text their telco to get the location of the nearest public toilet.

This is just a small sample of a few of the really innovative and interesting initiatives and companies that are building on top of SMS. There are tons of others and they’re pushing the boundaries of how you can use something as basic and prehistoric as SMS to deliver services that people want and need. Even countries like Myanmar, which are now opening up, are able to do things like implement M-Pesa where no other country in the region can.

Payments company Doku launches MyShortCart for merchants

Doku, an Indonesian payments company, has just launched their shopping cart solution for individuals and small business owners.

Indonesian payments company Doku announced last Friday that it would be pushing consumer transactions by its launch of MyShortCart, an independent shopping cart. It is aimed at individual online sellers and small online stores. MyShortCart accepts payments through online transfers, Doku Wallet and credit cards.
