Three months later, Zynga launched FrontierVille and the stigma started to fade slightly among my core games peers throughout the rest of summer in 2010. Part of it had to do with the quality of the game; it was more engaging than FarmVille had been and graphically more attractive. Part of it also had to do with the fact that FarmVille wasn’t going away no matter how critical the core games industry was of it and of Zynga (after two years and millions of lost monthly active users, the game is still at number two in our top 25 Facebook game rankings provided via AppData). Another part of it had to do with the growing acceptance that there’s a lot of money in social games.

Inside Virtual Goods: The Future of Social Gaming 2011 estimates that the social games market will hit $1.25 billion this year. Although the market is starting to mature, it’s still a big opportunity. Today developers often spend just a few hundred thousand dollars to develop a social game over a few months, while a console game for only one platform can easily cost $10 million over a period of one to three years in development.

On the monetization side, clearly defined genres can help a game monetize by connecting it with a loyal audience. Research in Inside Virtual Goods: The Future of Social Gaming 2011 suggests that a loyal, highly engaged audience is more likely to spend money within a game, even if the average revenue per user comes out to be lower than large games with a larger audience. I think a game would have an easier time attracting this niche audience if it used its niche as an advertisement.

The divide between core games and social games will probably never fully go away. However, no matter how different the two industries seem, one thing remains consistent: fun. The people who make core games and the people who make social games want to make games that people want to play. So while social game developers can’t necessarily count on a warm reception at the 2012 Game Developers Conference — I hear they’ve banished the Best New Social/Online Game award to GDC Online in Austin, Texas — we can probably count on a library of great games to play between now and then.

We may also see some new approaches to monetization as games with a core games product attached to it can leverage an external physical product to incentivize gameplay. We’re seeing the beginnings of this strategy is Dragon Age Legends where playing the social game unlocks in-game content in the console game, Dragon Age 2.

Core games have historically had well established game genres, which helps a game appeal to existing fans — “Come play me; I’m a farming sim just like that other game you like!” Social games still have a way to go before new games will appeal to fans of existing social games in that genre.

Reynolds isn’t the only core game developer to make the jump to social games. Over the last couple of years, we’ve seen new social game ventures from Raph Koster, Richard Garriot, Brenda Brathwaite, John Romero, and Sid Meier. Even video game academic Ian Bogost got sucked into developing a social game on Facebook as he tried to make Cow Clicker into a social game satire. Where these big names went, bigger companies followed. EA bought Playfish in 2009 and Disney acquired Playdom less than a year later. Today, even core game franchises like Red Dead Redemption and Dragon Age 2 are migrating to Facebook in the form of social games.

Moderated by Facebook’s Sean Ryan, the panel addressed issues like the increasing importance of branded intellectual property, new business models, advertising revenues, multiplatform development, genres and distribution. Zynga’s Owen Van Natta, Disney Interactive’s John Pleasants, EA’s Barry Cottle and Kabam’s Kevin Chou responded based on personal experience with their own titles along with consistent references to The Sims Social’s current progress on the Facebook platform.

Despite those moves into other nations in Asia, India still proves to be one of the core markets for the professional social networking site. InMobi Helps Sega’s iOS Game Hit Number One on iTunes, on Admob’s Home Turf

InMobi is growing at an accelerated pace. And it is interesting that a company of that size originated in Asia – from India, to be precise. First called mKhoj, it soon rebranded to InMobi and targeted markets where Google’s Admob couldn’t reach. It then acquired US-based Sprout to harness its HTML5 mobile ad capabilities.

The company didn’t stop making the headlines there, as it recently received $200 million in funding from Softbank, which could possibly hint that InMobi has some big plans in Japan. Now, InMobi isn’t just showing its prowess in Asian markets; it’s snatching clients from Admob in the US, right under Google’s nose, and on its home turf.

A recent blog post by InMobi shared that the company has helped Sega’s Sonic
& Sega All-Stars Racing hit number one in the iTunes App Store. It’s interesting because Sega actually chose InMobi over its US competitors. And InMobi did a great job on the in-game ads — achieving a higher than average click-through-rate (CTR) of 0.9 percent — for the folks at Sega America. So much so, that the client has agreed to do a case study with them.

In all fairness, I’m sure Admob has also helped many of its clients hit the charts on iTunes. But reading the case study from InMobi made me reflect how the company reached this stage in its development. I once asked an InMobi rep about the difference between InMobi and other mobile ad networks. The answer, in short, was execution.

From what we understand, the mobile ad network is also engaging with Africa, and is certainly one of the early movers in that market.

Nonetheless, that’s just the start for InMobi as the world anticipates its next step, especially with an extra $200 million in the bank.

Rumor: Baidu Invests In Group Buying Vertical 36tuan.com

Baidu, the largest Chinese search engine is rumored to have invested in group buying vertical 36tuan.com, right after another similar service Miqi.cn announced its $1.5m Series A round of funding from DT Capital Partners

Apart from 36tuan and Miqi, Jumei.com which is competing in the same forefront has also raised US$ tens of millions from Sequoia in March of this year.

Founded by serial entrepreneur Tsinghua graduate Su Haizhen in 2010, 36tuan now claims over 1 million registered users with about 100 staff.

People are saying group buying market is seeing an imminent bubble bursting maybe by year end when most of the group buying services are dying since it is getting harder to raise money from venture capitals because investors are now more cautious over the group buying market. iTwin Finally Launches Mac Version

iTwin is a reinvented form of thumbdrive that allows file secure, wireless local file-sharing between two computers without any cables. It’s like Dropbox, just that files aren’t shared in the cloud. Instead, they’re shared from PC to PC. When we last featured it on PO six months ago, iTwin was only available to Windows users – but full Mac support has been rolled out today.

Akash Nemani at iTwin, informed me that the Singapore-based start-up has just taken its long overdue Mac version out of beta, and is today ready for primetime. It only works for OS X Lion and Snow Leopard, though. So tough luck for Leopard or Tiger users.
