Prudential and Fosun Group (Fosun) announced today they have signed a definitive agreement enabling them to move forward in creating a private equity fund (PE fund) for the Chinese marketplace. This agreement allows the investment team to begin making private equity investments in a diversified group of industries and asset classes, including public and non-public companies based in China and companies outside of China with significant revenue or other business connections to China.

The terms of the partnership include Prudential investing up to US$500 million in the fund. Fosun, which will take primary responsibility for investment decisions, will invest US$100 million.

Sina’s LBS, WeiLingDi, targets 1 million users by June 2011

GMIC day 2. We are spending more time on the ground talking to the booths. Amongst the booths include Sina’s Weibo, QQ Weibo, Datou, adSage, UCWeb, gypSII etc.

Sina’s Weibo booth is featured on the prominent area, near the entrance to the conference. I stopped by and talked to Alon Lin, the product manager of Weilingdi, Sina’s LBS network.

After open beta testing since March, Sina launched its LBS service, WeiLingDi officially yesterday (April 27) at GMIC.

During the demo, Alon showed me the 3D ”i-Code” sign-in terminal, which ensures the actual presence of customers at certain location. So far, they are providing this device to all merchants that partner with the service. Looks quite bulky to me.

So far, WeiLingDi has signed Costa Coffee for in-store promotions at all Beijing branches, for example, upgrading from medium to large cup and gifting the mayor a box of coffee beans.

10.27am: The partnership would provide Nokia with Tencent’s latest technology. Past collaborations between Tencent and Nokia have allowed both companies to gain rapid progress. Zheng explained that speed is important in this industry, as major upgrade has to be made in every 6 months.

10.32am: Zheng also shared that the partnership has been great so far. He showed a hockey growth weekly chart which I failed to take a quick pic on.

Scor has been looking at the business for some months but was still not sure whether there was any deal to be done, according to one person familiar with the situation. Any deal would be complicated and was likely to involve both buying assets and writing a reinsurance contract over older liabilities, which made it difficult to assess the profitability and capital costs of a deal.

Denis Kessler, chief executive of Scor, declined to confirm the talks as the group reported 2010 results on Tuesday, although he did say its strategic plan was to take on “biometric risks” as it grows its life industry exposure, which accounted for 40 per cent of operating profits last year.

This is in contrast to the mainly investment-related risks that are attached to most US annuity products, which are savings products that usually provide some sort of return guarantee. Scor sold its US fixed annuity business last month to release capital for other life industry products.

Transamerica Re, which writes about $2bn in net premiums annually, has a significant annuity reinsurance business alongside its other mortality and capital release policy operations.

“We don’t know if Transamerica Re satisfies [our] acquisition criteria,” Mr Kessler told reporters.

I particularly like the real-time mobile usage visualization. It’s a pleasant surprise to learn that Singapore’s mobile penetration is above 140 percent. I understand it’s high, but I didn’t know it is this high.

“Over the past decade our cities have been blanketed with layers of digital information,” said Carlo Ratti and Assaf Biderman, respectively Director and Associate Director of the MIT Senseable City Lab, which leads the project in a statement. “As a result we now have the ability to collect large amounts of urban data in real time, which are radically changing the way we understand, design and ultimately live in cities.”

Aegon is in advanced talks with French reinsurer Scor over the sale of the US life reinsurance business, Transamerica , which has been on the block since last summer, according to people familiar with the companies.

However, it is far from certain that Scor will complete a deal for any part of the business, which the Dutch group is looking to sell as it refocuses on core operations and tries to raise capital both to repay the Dutch government and to invest in its core markets.Transamerica is a complex set of operations and business lines rather than a simple legal entity and Scor would be unlikely to buy the whole lot, because it is only interested in adding mortality related risks and not investment risks.

The European Central Bank is strongly hinting that it will raise interest rates at its next meeting, in response to rising headline inflation — even though this rise is the result of rising food and oil prices, which are not the results of ECB policy.
Let me try a different take on why this is such a bad idea. Suppose that we focus on wage rates, which are often seen as the stickiest, most inertia-driven prices. The eurozone, like the United States, has seen wage growth slump in the face of high unemployment:

Is this really a policy that the ECB would defend in so many words? I doubt it. But however sober and dignified talk of price stability may sound, that’s what the proposed policy amounts to.
