Here we are, talking about mobile again. Alibaba’s gross merchandise volume from mobile increased from RMB 118 billion (over US$19 billion) to RMB 164 billion (US$26 billion), marking year-on-year growth of more than 300 percent.

Finally, there’s Alipay, Alibaba’s escrow payment service. Alipay technically isn’t a part of Alibaba, its numerous appearances in Alibaba’s roadshow media only further highlights the awkward relationship between the two entities when it comes to finances. “It’s important to note that since 2011, Alibaba Group no longer controls Alipay, but has contractual arrangements with it,” the narrator cheerfully states, before describing how it works seamlessly with Alibaba’s marketplaces.

After the slides, we then go into storytelling mode. In the video titled “How Alibaba Has Impacted China,” viewers go on a tour to various localities to meet ordinary people who have expanded their small business thanks to Alibaba’s marketplaces. “When I first saw Taobao, I knew very little about the internet,” says a painter from the Deyang, Sichuan Province. “After a month of posting my paintings online, I sold my first one. In the Taobao explanatory video, Alibaba explains how its flagship consumer-facing marketplace features so many different products you could decorate your entire home just using the site. It also outlines its main marketing service, which lets lets vendors target potential customers with keyword selections and a pay-for-click bidding system.

Tmall is where domestic and international vendors go to sell their goods to Chinese consumers under branded storefronts. Alibaba singles out the distributor of Elle handbags in China as an example of a well-known brand that uses Tmall as the core of its online business.

As for global-facing marketplaces, AliExpress is Alibaba’s relatively-unknown but fast-growing business-to-consumer marketplace. “It’s a straight way between the producer and me,” says an AliExpress customer from Russia. “All other stores buy from China. So why should I buy from other stores?” Later, Alibaba turns the spotlight towards two entrepreneurs who sourced a Chinese manufacturing partner for their inflatable pool toys using Alibaba.com.

However, Alibaba has also proposed a maximum aggregated offering price of $24.3 billion, which might prove to be the total raised inclusive of the possibility of more shares put on the table after the offering. Either way, it’s more than the $16 billion that Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) raised in May 2012, and so Alibaba will soon become the biggest US IPO ever.

If Alibaba hits the top end of its share range in the IPO, it’ll be effectively worth $162 billion. That’s a nose ahead of Amazon’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) market cap of $159.84 billion at the close of Friday’s trading. Alibaba founder Jack Ma is already China’s richest man, so he’ll extend that lead once the IPO hits the tickers.

Lazada and Xiaomi: 5,000 Redmi 1S sold out in 7 minutes in Indonesia (UPDATED)

Xiaomi started its first flash sale in Indonesia today, selling 5,000 Redmi 1S phones. As expected, anticipation mounted and all the phones sold out in under one hour – or seven minutes according to Lazada Indonesia and Xiaomi. This took a bit longer than the India sale, which sold 40,000 phones in 4 seconds.

In India, the real action is in the budget smartphone arena where Redmi 1S will enter the fray. Why Xiaomi faces a catch-22 situation in India, and what it is doing about it

Tomorrow, Xiaomi’s Redmi 1S will go on sale for the first time in India. The plan is to sell 40,000 units in the flash sale on Flipkart, but well over 200,000 people have already registered for it, Manu Jain, Xiaomi’s India head, told Tech in Asia.

40,000 is not a small number to sell on the first day of sales but eager Mi fans on Xiaomi India’s Facebook page have already started posting their disappointment over the huge gap between the demand and supply.

According to the agreement, the three partners will deepen their collaborations by connecting account systems, sharing traffic, membership benefits, big data, payment and online finance, etc.

Wang Jianlin, chairman of Wanda, added they planned to introduce new investors and the investment amount is expected to reach 20 billion yuan in future five years.

Wang emphasized that the new joint venture will integrate Wanda’s offline retailing resources with location, search and communication services offered by the two partners to build an O2O e-commerce platform. Wanda E-commerce is engaged in sell services rather than physical products, he added. “O2O is the biggest pie in e-commerce and this is just the beginning,” said Wang.

Some analysts pointed out that Tencent’s previous deal with JD, China’s No.2 e-commerce platform by market share, might be one of the reasons for why Wanda E-commerce gives priority to O2O sector. According to the agreement Tencent inked with JD earlier this year, JD will be Tencent’s premier partner in physical product e-commerce industry, and Tencent now only maintained virtual product e-commerce and O2O local life businesses.

The joint venture has named Dong Ce, former executive of luxury product e-commerce sites Jiapin.com and Xiu.com, as CEO. Gao Xia, former vice president of Gaopeng, and Cao Dajun, former CIO of Newegg Greater Los Angeles Area, are respectively appointed as COO and CTO of Wanda E-commerce, according to people with knowledge of the matter.

This tie-up is one of Tencent’s moves to challenge the dominance of Alibaba in China’s e-commerce sector. In the same deal mentioned-above, Tencent acquired a 15% stake in JD. It also transferred its e-commerce sites to JD and allows JD to integrate its service in WeChat and Mobile QQ to commercialize its huge user base. JD grows and catches up with Alibaba rapidly after the cooperation.

Holding divergent views on how China will shop in 10 years, the two Chinese tycoons almost made a 100 million yuan (US$16 million) bet on the future of Chinese retail sector. In 2013, Wang offered a bet to give Ma 10 million yuan if online consumption has surpassed 50 percent of total retail volume in ten years, and Ma should give Wang the same amount should online consumption fall short.

Greetings!! I wanted to thank you for sending the lens to me so timely!
I am a truck driver and just got back home after being gone and driving the truck away from home. I just got to open the lens you sent me. I got home (8-30-2014).
I do not own a full frame camera and tried the lens you sent me on my camera. The results were unfortunately not good. I have too much blur in the frame of the photos. I am aware of the 14 day return policy. But due to the nature of my work and the United States having a legal holiday here called Labor Day. I will miss the 14 day return deadline. (Our post office opens after the return deadline).

Xiaomi officially launches in Indonesia with Redmi 1S

(Updated on August 28th: We previously wrote that the Xiaomi Redmi 1S would be on sale for only one hour. That was incorrect – the sale will go on as long as stocks last.)

Today popular Chinese gadget manufacturer Xiaomi officially launches in Indonesia. Company heads Hugo Barra and Lin Bin flew to Jakarta and presented its first product for the country: the IDR 1.5 million (US$128) Redmi 1S. Surprisingly, that’s a bit cheaper compared to the selling price in neighboring Singapore (S$169 or US$136); gadgets are generally more expensive in Indonesia.

The Redmi 1S first will be exclusively sold on ecommerce site Lazada Indonesia. The online sale will commence on September 4 at 11am until stocks last. Interested buyers should first register themselves on Lazada Indonesia’s website here. The company did not reveal how many phones they have prepared for the first flash sale.

The Redmi 1S is a 4.7-inch Android phone with 1280×720 IPS screen. The phone is powered by a 1.6GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor, 1GB RAM, Adreno 305 GPU, 8MP back camera, and 1.6MP front camera. The phone supports dual SIMs.
