Note: The name “double-hundred” refers to the 100 companies Tencent will pick and the 10 billion user visits it plans to send them. The number 10 billion in Chinese is rendered as 100 100 millions, so although “double-hundred” doesn’t make as much sense in English, it works in Chinese. The name also may have been chosen in part as a reference to a 2000 government plan with the same name that was focused on importing and developing talent from overseas.

When WeChat released the API, several activity trackers (such as fitness and health trackers) became WeChat-connected so that users can follow their activity data, or see how well they or their WeChat contacts perform on the ranking chart. At Tencent’s annual partner conference this week, several more WeChat hardware products, in sectors such as healthcare, wearable and TV, were showcased to show what WeChat integration can do and what its potential is. Here are some examples.

Razer Nabu

Gaming hardware and software developer Razer launched fitness wristband Razer Nabu during CES 2014 earlier this year. Later in July it unveiled a WeChat-connected version.

Two Razer Nabu users can get connected on WeChat by “high-fiving” each other. When a WeChat message is coming in, Nabu creates an alert.

As Razer has a background in creating devices or services for gamers, it has produced gaming-related features for Nabu. Apart from notifications, Razer Nabu users can get virtual reward items by walking or exercising in real life. With the WeChat-integrated Razer Nabu, users can earn virtual rewards for Tian Tian Ku Pao, a popular running game on WeChat.

2人のRazer NabuユーザはWeChat上で互いに「ハイファイ」することでつながる。WeChat のメッセージが来ると、Nabuはアラートを発する。

Home-use medical devices are considered good presents for parents or elderly family members in China. Such devices that work with mobile apps have become popular among young Chinese consumers who are working far away from home, enabling them to be kept informed of the health status of their family members.

Now WeChat can make it even easier and more interactive. Blood pressure readings can be shared with WeChat contacts, and users can track the history of the data for the person he or she cares for.

中国では、自宅用の医療機器は両親や年老いた家族のためのプレゼントとして最適と考えられている。モバイルアプリで動作するこうした機器は、家から離れたところで働く中国の若い消費者の間で人気が高まっている。この人たちは、家族の健康状態を知っておくことができる。

Xiaomi’s first smart home gadgets launch this week, and they look awfully familiar

Earlier this month, Xiaomi showed off a new smart home platform and a series of new gadgets for it to be released on the coming months. This week, the first of those gadgets and the app that will ultimately tie them all together will be released to the public.

Xiaomiで初めてのスマートホーム機器が今週ローンチされる。かなり馴染みのあるもののようだ。

今月初め、Xiaomiは今後数か月でリリースされる予定の新スマートホームプラットホームと一連の新機器を明らかにした。最終的には全てが結びつけられることになる機器や一連のアプリの第一弾が一般向けに今週公表される。

The Ants smart webcam is slated to go on sale Wednesday at a price of RMB 149 (US$24.36), according to Xiaomi’s official Weibo account. The “Xiaoyi,” as it’s been dubbed, sports 720p resolution, a 111 degree wide-angle lens with 4x zoom, and the ability to make two-way voice calls. Activated and viewable via the smartphone, it doubles as both a webcam for chatting and a security camera with recording capabilities. The camera automatically records whenever it detects movement in view.

So why did Xiaomi decide to make a fancy webcam? Anyone who follows the company closely knows it’s never the first to create a product. It just makes products that are better and more affordable. These types of smart webcams are all the rage among China’s many young hardware companies right now, as evidenced by their repeat appearances on China’s premier gadget crowdfunding site Demohour. Here’s one that did pretty well, raising nearly RMB 320,000 (US$50,000). And there are many more where that came from.

The Ants webcam is not an isolated case. Smart home devices are a hot trend, and Xiaomi seems to be keeping close tabs on the ones that do well. The Mi Smart Power Plug? Yeah, there have to be at least a dozen of those. This one is in its second generation already. Smart light bulbs? Yep, we got those already, too. And, of course, there’s the remote center that ties them all together. Take. Your. Pick.

Note that Xiaomi itself didn’t make all these gadgets from scratch, but invested and formed partnerships with existing companies to sell them under the Xiaomi name. And with Xiaomi’s solid brand recognition and network of resources, you can bet all those gadgets will sell for less than their competitors. Xiaomi’s swift forays into the smart home industry might bode well for cash-strapped hardware startups looking for benefactors. And for better or for worse, it will accelerate consolidation in a very fragmented vertical.

Jack Ma on how to find happiness at work

You probably know the name Jack Ma. The man is, after all, the chairman and founder of Chinese ecommerce giant Alibaba, and his word carries some serious weight in Asian tech circles.

What you may not know is that Jack Ma occasionally blogs. I’ve translated his latest piece below, as I think it’s something that everyone should consider, especially those of you working long hours trying to get startups off the ground.

Jack Maという名前を耳にしたことがあるだろう。この男は、結局のところ、中国のeコマースの巨人Alibabaの会長兼設立者になっている。彼の言葉は、アジアの技術系サークルの中で相当の重みを持っている。

While resting at an airport in Alaska in a small, simple room, I watched the night shift employee Jennifer. In just ten minutes, she and my colleague discussed the influence of genetics on disease and her own unique take on the influence the earth’s rotation has on atmospheric warming.

Off to the side, I was shocked by her level of knowledge, so I curiously asked about her background. She was a geneticist from the American south, she knew how to fly a helicopter, was over 50 years old, and had three kids. She came to work in this small, polar town after her husband’s work transferred him here. She said she had already worked at that customer service desk for nine months, and she laughed: “I like this job because I don’t have to think too much, it’s simple and pleasant.”

Happiness at work comes from your own attitude. There are always people who can find happiness even in their tedious, repetitive jobs, and yet others are always dissatisfied regardless of how important and interesting their jobs are.

A good job isn’t something you go out and find, it’s something you discover while you’re working.

仕事で幸せであるかどうかはその人の態度によって決まります。退屈で繰り返しの多い仕事でさえ、そこに幸せを見出せる人がいます。一方で、いかに重要で興味深い仕事であっても、つねに不平不満を感じる人もいます。

Alibaba spins off travel business as it attacks China’s $10 billion online trip booking market

Alibaba highlighted the importance of online travel booking today by spinning off its travel sites into a separate business. For China’s online shoppers, this means a new website that brings together all of Alibaba’s travel offerings.

The new site, Alitrip, consolidates the existing national and international bookings for planes, hotels, cruises, package tours, and more from across Alibaba’s main Chinese ecommerce marketplaces (Taobao, Tmall, and the Juhuasuan daily deals site).

Alitrip claims to have over 10,000 merchants selling travel products. Alibaba is getting bigger names in the travel industry involved too. Today the ecommerce titan revealed that Hong Kong airline Cathay Pacific and hotel-booking site Agoda have agreed to join Alitrip in time for China’s equivalent of Cyber Monday, which occurs on November 11.

To assure online shoppers that it’s safe to use all these merchants spread across Alitrip – rather than an all-in-one online service, such as arch-rival Ctrip – Alibaba says it has set up a RMB 100 million (US$16.3 million) consumer protection fund that promises refunds within an hour.

China’s top two travel sites in terms of sales are Ctrip and Elong.

China’s online travel booking market is worth RMB 61.4 billion (US$10 billion) in consumer expenditure, according to the newest data available from iResearch for Q2 2014.

オンラインでの購入者に対し、主要なライバルであるCtripなどの一体型オンラインサービスではなく、Alitrip全体に広がるマーチャントのサービスを安全に使っていただけると安心してもらうため、Alibabaは、１時間以内の返金を約束する消費者保護基金を1億人民元(1630万米ドル)かけて設立したとコメントしている。

Alibaba’s IPO lifts Jack Ma to top of Forbes’ China Rich List for the first time

Jack Ma, the founder and chairman of eshopping empire Alibaba, now tops Forbes’ China Rich List for the first time. Today’s updated list from Forbes shows Ma’s personal wealth at US$19.5 billion – nearly three times greater than his stash last year of $7.1 billion, when he ranked eighth.

Unsurprisingly, a number of other leading tech entrepreneurs top the list. Baidu’s Robin Li is second, while Tencent’s Pony Ma is third.

A couple of months ago, Bloomberg pegged Ma’s fortune at US$21.8 billion, and that’s pretty much confirmed by this new data from Forbes. Ma’s moolah is of course boosted by Alibaba’s recent IPO. The ecommerce titan now has a market cap of US$240 billion.

2nd. Robin Li – US$14.7 billion
Up from US$11.1 billion a year ago
Robin Li co-founded Baidu back in 2000, and his wealth has grown slowly yet strongly since then. Baidu’s current market cap is US$80 billion.
