“Being near the world’s best ecosystem for electronics, and working closely with factories helps overcome many challenges,” HAX general partner Benjamin Joffe says. “Many entrepreneurs are coming in and communities and platforms are forming, which helps a lot.”

The Flow of IoT, Beware of Copycats

Shenzhen presents a cheaper and faster solution for manufacturers to build prototypes, but building products remains challenging since there are a handful of copycats around. There are problems like increasing labor costs and living expenses in Shenzhen as the centre becomes a hub for innovation itself rather than a cheap manufacturing city.

One of the challenges in the market is a bandwagon effect on successful products. Joffe mentions that “me-too” products are still a common feature. “A bit cheaper, a bit faster. We think it’s a huge mistake for entrepreneurs, as this approach makes it hard to differentiate and lowers margins for everyone,” he states.

Still, other foreign founders are hesitant to move the innovation process closer to China at this point. “For many, China is a mysterious black box and they cut corners in making deals, trying to go too fast,” Joffe points out. “Understanding where your IP is important, since it helps mitigate risks, as well as doing proper due diligence on partners.”

What do Shenzhen based expat-preneurs need?

HAX based both in Shenzhen and Silicon Valley, Joffe believes one of the biggest cultural differences between Silicon Valley and Shenzen is that the former stands out for its “pay it forward” culture. “It comes partly from several generations of tech entrepreneurs reinvesting in the ecosystem and new generations,” Joffe explains. “It is starting to emerge in China with the newly minted millionaires from Alibaba, Tencent, Baidu and more.”

Another problem is that there is still little connection between foreign and local entrepreneurs. “It is improving and HAX is working on that too.” Joffe said.

“There are many excellent engineers and scientists who could build global successes,” Joffe says. “Make sure you have the time to dedicate to it, that there is a market for you and learn fast.”

Singapore’s DBS bank brings its Paylah mobile payments app to Apple Watch

Singaporean bank DBS is bringing its DBS Paylah app to the Apple Watch, it announced today. DBS Paylah is a mobile payment app for iOS and Android phones. DBS account holders can link their accounts to the app in order to add funds to it. The funds are stored in the app’s mobile wallet and can be used for online payments, online purchases (with selected merchants), donations, and micro-payments between friends.

The Apple Watch version of Paylah is basically an extension of the iPhone app, enabled through bluetooth sync between the two devices. As such, users don’t need to download a separate app to their Watch. They can just update their mobile app to work with it.

For now, users can then receive notifications on their transactions, such as a successful payment, and view their available balance on the Watch. As DBS told Tech in Asia, it will eventually add functions such as sending money and the ability to approve requests for funds using the wearable.

The app is tied to the phone, where the user must log in at least once using a six-digit alphanumeric password. The Watch will need to be in close proximity to the phone and the apps will need to be locked together via bluetooth, in order for the user to be able to check information on the wearable. The iPhone version also supports logging in via TouchID for users of iPhone 5s and up. The total amount for transactions is limited to S$999 (US$739) by default, although the user can adjust that at their discretion.

The mobile payments space in Singapore has been expanding during the past year and a half, with major players such as domestic telco Singtel’s and Standard Chartered’s Dash app as well as Mastercard’s Masterpass being prominent examples. Singapore startups such as 2C2P and Matchmove (which received investment by Japanese credit card and financial services company Credit Saison last January) are also active in this space.

The full DBS Paylah app for iOS and Android was introduced last year. It’s not immediately clear how widely used it is in Singapore, and the bank declined to provide any details in this regard. Play Store install numbers currently sit in the 100,000 – 500,000 category, but that is a pretty big margin and doesn’t say much about active user or transaction numbers.

For much of the past year or so, the French government has been engaged in a massive campaign to promote the country’s growing tech economy.

Dubbed, “La French Tech,” government ministers have been barnstorming the country to highlight efforts by entrepreneurs. In addition, they’ve been leading massive delegations of startups to major trade shows like CES in Las Vegas and Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Monday: In a grand theater in Paris, Sigfox announced a partnership and investment by Samsung. While the amount was undisclosed, the deal gives a major boost to Sigfox’s platform, a network designed to enable communication between connected objects.

French officials have been promoting the Internet of Things as an area where the country can be competitive. And Sigfox, based in Toulouse in southwest France, has been making a bid to be one of the country’s most successful global players.

Rise of the machines: The industrial Internet of Things is taking shape

The next wave of innovation about to wash over the connected world is the industrial Internet of Things (IoT). Beyond smart watches and FitBits, forward-thinking businesses are applying the concept of IoT to complex, psychical machinery, like jet engines and locomotives, to unleash unexpected growth opportunities and fuel innovation. Combined with data analytics, companies can leverage the industrial IoT to impact the economy, the job market and the future; and it has the potential to add $15 trillion to the global economy in 2030, according to Accenture.

While we’re seeing companies lean into the industrial IoT, platforms are still in the early stages of maturity. Executives will have to carefully choose and manage their platforms, explore the technical challenges, identify gaps in information sharing and interoperability, and work with their company’s closest partners to bridge them.

The flow of technology adoption is reversing — as is the case with connected devices. Historically, businesses have sat in the driver seat of technological innovation and driven the adoption of new technologies. Following the old model, BlackBerry phones were created as a device architected around the needs of large corporations and slowly consumers began to adopt them as well.

The Sing-Song table is a ping-pong table that has sensors connected underneath. As the game progresses, the tapping of the ball adjusts the music to match the pace of play. Okay, so the market here is quite limited. Still, it shows how just about anything can become an instrument.

The Flex Sleeves project has a bit more market potential. A performer puts on the two armbands, and they can use them to control the mix of music and do things like Auto-Tune their voice. The bands also affect the visual display on the screen.
