Pale Blue (Indonesia)

Pale Blue, a sidescrolling beat ‘em up from Tinker Games, is an ambitious project – not just because it tackles subject matter like putting players in the shoes of a willing villain as opposed to a hero, but also because it’s the first core PC game that the development studio will be working on.

Tinker Games’ last release was a casual running game for iOS, but Pale Blue looks really good and even smashed its crowdfunding target by a cool US$10,000.

8. Japanese firms’ investment activity in Emerging Asia will remain steady.

Over the past few years, Japanese investors have, for a variety of reasons — fall-out from Fukushima, contracting home market, desire to diversify away from China — looked at Emerging Asia as an attractive investment destination. Japanese firms generally make decisions in a careful and deliberate manner and thereafter tend to “stick with it” unless and until there are strong countervailing reasons to change course. Investments by Japanese firms in Vietnam, Indonesia, India and other countries in Emerging Asia have generally followed this pattern and I anticipate that this will continue in 2015.

8. 日本企業のアジア新興市場での投資活動は堅調が続く

過去数年間、日本の投資家は福島からの放射性物質、自国市場の縮小、中国以外の多角化など様々な理由でアジア新興市場を魅力的な投資先として見てきた。日本企業は概して注意深く慎重な意思決定をして、進路を変えるのに強い理由がない限り「現状にとどまる」という傾向がある。ベトナム、インドネシア、インドその他アジア新興地域への日本企業による投資は概ねこのパターンにしたがったものであり、私はこれが2015年も続くとみている。

The one exception to the steady-as-she-goes approach is SoftBank (of course), which has made big bang investments in Emerging Asia recently and is likely to follow these up with more such deals. A related investor is Visionnaire Ventures, a joint fund by Temasek Holdings and Taizo Son, brother of Softbank’s founder Masayoshi Son.

5. Korean startups are getting investment and acquisition from overseas VCs

This year, many Korean startups received significant investment from Silicon Valley VCs. Coupang, a social commerce company, received a US$100 million investment from Sequoia Capital. Yello Mobile, a mobile media business in South Korea comprised of more than 50 companies, raised US$100 million from Formation 8 at a US$1 billion valuation.

5. 韓国のスタートアップは国外のベンチャーキャピタルから出資や買収を受ける

今年、多くの韓国系スタートアップ企業はシリコンバレーのベンチャーキャピタルから相当の資金を調達した。Coupangというソーシャルコマース企業は1億米ドルをSequoia Capitalから投資された。50社ほどで構成されるYello Mobileという韓国のモバイルメディア企業は1億米ドルをFormation 8から調達した（時価総額は10億米ドル）。

Korean startups are also starting to get acquired by Silicon Valley companies. Tapjoy, a leading mobile ad-tech and monetization platform, acquired 5Rocks, a Korean analytics and marketing automation company. 5Rocks has a lot of customers, mostly game developers in Korea and Japan, and is also considering getting into the Chinese market through Tapjoy’s subsidiary in Shanghai.

Virtuous cycles are is now created in Korea’s startup ecosystem. In the next few articles, I will elaborate on these individual startups.

The FuturePlay’s CEO Jung-hee Ryu successfully sold Olaworks to Intel while the company’s CTO Jason Han sold his company to Korea Telecom. Using their experience as engineers, they established FuturePlay, an incubator providing specialized programs for hardware engineers.

FuturePlayのCEOであるJung-hee Ryu氏はうまくOlaworksをIntelに売却したほか、同社CTOのJason Han氏は彼の会社をKorea Telecomに売却した。エンジニアとしての経験を生かして、彼らはハードウェアエンジニアに特化したプログラムを提供するインキュベーターであるFuturePlayを設立した。

3. Top talent from big companies and top universities are starting their own businesses

The co-founders of KnowRe (a cloud-based secondary math program) were mathematical prodigies at Seoul National University, KAIST and POSTECH, Korea’s elite universities. They were authors of a best selling math-learning book as well as successful math instructors in Daechidong, Korea’s foremost private education zone. They brought fundamental math concepts to KnowRe to help students having problems with the subject, and set up headquarters both in Seoul and New York City.

Goldman Sachs invested US$36 million in Baedal Minjok, the food delivery app. The company, Woowa Brothers, was founded in 2010 by two brothers, Bongjin Kim, a designer and Kwangsoo Kim, an engineer. Bongjin Kim had previously worked for Naver, Korea’a primary search portal. The brothers are heading to Japan with Naver’s messaging app Line by forming a new joint venture called Line Bros. Corp. They are currently operating a food delivery service called Line Wow in Japan.

4. Korean startups are getting global attention

Between, the social network service for couples, hit a major milestone by reaching 10 million downloads globally. The app developer VCNC revealed that 50% of their users are from overseas, mainly Japan, Taiwan and Southeast Asia. Earlier this year, DeNA, Japan’s mobile service leader made a strategic investment in the company to support its 1 million Japanese users.

Memebox was the first Korean startup to be accepted on Y Combinator’s program. The company successfully presented on demoday on March and has said that Y Combinator Startups internally chose them as one of the top three startups on its winter 2014 program. Memebox ships to 36 countries, including China.

4. 韓国のスタートアップは世界の関心を集めている

Baidu and Tencent’s ecommerce joint venture with Wanda nabs $161M funding

Today Wanda Group, the Chinese commercial real estate firm best known for its movie theater chains, announced that its joint ecommerce venture with Tencent and Baidu closed a RMB 1 billion (US$161 million) funding round. The two investment funds, Xude Rendao and Centec Networks, will take 2 percent and 3 percent equity in the company, respectively. Wanda Group states that Tencent and Baidu now each hold a 15 percent stake in the venture, which is now valued at RMB 20 billion (about US$3.2 billion).

The Wanda-Tencent-Baidu ecommerce venture (which Wanda refers to as Wand E-commerce in its release) was publicly announced back in August. Wanda maintained a 70 percent stake in the US$814 million venture, with Tencent and Baidu splitting the remainder evenly. While the companies gave few specific details regarding the venture’s execution, their public statements repeatedly mentioned the importance of online-to-offline commerce. When one factor’s in Baidus commitment to maps and beacon technology, WeChat’s commitment to payments and social, and Wanda’s entertainment properties, it’s easy to speculate – but hard to know specifically – how the venture might play out.

Following the news of the venture’s formation, Wanda has kept quiet regarding its development. But in December it purchased a stake in 99Bill, an Alipay competitor. That would appear to confirm Wanda’s interest in integrating online payments into its offline services, and challenge previous assumptions that Wanda would be hopping aboard the WeChat Payments train.

Despite how little is known about the joint venture, Wanda looks set to own a bevy of virtual real estate in addition to its physical real estate. “O2O places a greater importance on the link between people and services than traditional commercial methods, with the size of the market considerably greater than just physical transactions,” its statement reads. “Wanda possesses the world’s largest offline consumer network, with 1.5 million customers in 2014 and an estimated 6 billion customers by 2020. If Wanda E-commerce can combine its offline and online resources effectively, it has the potential to become a new Internet giant with incredible potential.” In other words, Wanda is thinking big.

First-of-its-kind mobile governance platform

A couple of weeks ago, Indian president Pranab Mukherjee launched the country’s first and arguably world’s largest multi-mode mobile governance platform in Karnataka state. The citizens of Karnataka can use this platform called Karnataka MobileOne to pay utility bills and property tax, book railway and bus tickets, file income tax, avail of mobile passport and driving license services, and access other government and private sector schemes. “These anytime, anywhere, anyhow services will be available 24x7x365 days at any location in the state on any mobile device,” the government claims, adding that it is “future-proof.”

Many internet startups have just got going in India and a lot is riding on the hope that prime minister Narendra Modi and the IT minister Ravishankar Prasad keep the daily promises they’ve been dishing out. “India has 900 million mobile phones and 3 billion internet connections. We have to make them more effective and accessible to promote entrepreneurship,” said Prasad during a visit to Kerala’s Startup Village in Kochi yesterday.

The Indian startup scene brightened up this year, with the top 30 startups raising over US$4 billion from investors. It’s easy to imagine how much better 2015 would get if basic infrastructure issues are sorted out.

The Philippine government is weighing options on how to regulate Uber after taxi operators called for a crackdown on what they dubbed an illegal and unlicensed car-booking service.
