My Dentist Pal is Revolutionizing the Dentist Industry in The Philippines

Going to the dentist probably does not rate very high on most people’s favorite daily activities; it most definitely does not on mine. There’s really very little fun or enjoyment to be found in a visit to your dentist, more often than not it’s painful and terrifying. So you really have to wonder, what does a dental-themed startup have to offer to change that? Enter My Dentist Pal.

Founded in January of 2012, by Cloudwalk Digital, My Dentist Pal is a web-based tool for dentists that aims to digitize the dental practice. It basically allows dentists to access patient records, tooth charting, and even simple accounting, to find out who’s paid and who hasn’t, from anywhere. Patients can get updated on their next dental appointment, or even find the location of the nearest dentist.

According to Cloudwalk Digital’s Marc Medina:

Subscription is fast and easy enough; it’s just your usual fill-in-the-blanks registration form. And at the moment it’s free too, as the site currently relies on ad placement to make money. Unfortunately, the site advertises that it’s intended to be used by both dentists and patients, subscription appears to be for dentists only. Plus, the link to the How It Works PDF appears to be broken as well.

With One New App, Every Sina Weibo Post Can Be Easily Translated into English

A couple of months ago we previewed the creation of a new kind of third-party app for Sina Weibo – one that would translate the mostly Chinese content posted to the service into English. That would make the lively, Twitter-esque Weibo a lot more accessible to people who can’t speak Chinese. Well, today that app, called Surround App, has actually launched, so we can finally test it out.

何カ月か前、私たちはSina Weibo向けに、第三者が新しく開発した、中国語の投稿内容を英語に翻訳するアプリについてプレビューした。このアプリにより中国語が話せない人でも投稿が活発なTwitter風のWeiboにアクセスできるようになる。最近、この周辺アプリと呼ばれるアプリが実際に投入されたので、私たちもやっとレビューすることができるようになった。

Surround App is free and allows one-click machine translation of any Weibo post from someone you follow. In addition, it gives you a full English UI for the most common Weibo functions, like making retweets and comments. The Hong Kong startup admits that many features are omitted in this beta, with things like translation of comments, slang translation, image uploading, and paid-for human translations all coming at a later date. Here’s the current beta that I’ve been playing with:

There are a few confusing aspects to the new beta. What looks like the retweet/repost button (pictured above) is actually for comments, and what’s apparently a refresh icon actually serves to repost the content. It’s not made very clear how to activate the translation – it turns out you need to hit that arrow button in the bottom-left of the app. Hopefully the icons will be rethought. If it sounds like I’m being too tough on a free app, that’s just because I’m keen for it to be good as it could prove so useful for many people.

Co-founder Jeffrey Broer previously told my colleague that the concept was born of his own frustration at not being able to understand “all these fascinating people online that I want to follow”. The team has received about US$15,000 in seed funding, plus office space and technical guidance, from HK Accelerator.

Surround App is now in Google Play for Android users, but the iPhone version hasn’t yet shown up in iTunes.

So the package will not be the nicest I have ever sent, but with such savings then best to leave the boxes on the shelf...

I have tried many of the cheap consolidators and have invariably found them to be a nightmare to deal with, but having said that, then I am willing to have another try with one of them, so if you have any carriers trusted by you, then let me know for next time.

Thursday's part leak only shows one corner component of the motherboard, so it does not offer an indication as to what processor or other parts might be included.


The pictured component was obtained by Japanese retailer Moumantai, which was also the source of previous leaks of alleged next-gen iPhone components. One part pictured last month showed an alleged "iPhone 5S" camera lens, along with an unidentified mystery part.

Another component shown by the same retailer claimed to feature the home button of an iPhone 5S, while a third was alleged to be the vibration motor intended for an unreleased Apple handset.

Authentication Servers

Firewall and proxy servers can perform some kinds of user authentication functions. It can also consider the use of a central database, known as "authentication server" to centrally store all the necessary information for authenticating and authorising users such as user passwords and access privileges. In addition, these authentication servers can support stronger authentication schemes such as the use of tokens and smart cards, which may not be able to be supported by proxies.

For example, Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service (RADIUS) and Terminal Access Controller Access Control System Plus (TACACS+) are common schemes used for remote authentication.

Referring to Figure 2, an authentication server can be used to authenticate remote dial-in users before they are granted access rights to the network.
• The information stored in the authentication database should be encrypted and be well protected from unauthorised access or modification.
• A single dedicated machine, which is securely protected, should be used.
• The server should be properly configured to log administrative transactions, usage accounting information and authentication transactions such as failed login attempts.
• If more than one authentication servers are used for resilience, make sure that the information stored in the authentication databases is propagated to all other replicas.

FIREWALLS

A firewall can be considered as a security measure for protecting an organisation's resources against intruders. It is an important component of a security infrastructure. It should be reminded that the design and setup of a firewall requires thorough understanding about the firewall features, functions, capabilities and limitations as well as the threats and vulnerabilities associated with the Internet.

Hence, if you are a more business-inclined individual and you want to bring in a technical co-founder, be prepared to have a Unique Selling Point. It can be from having funds, exclusive contacts or inside information. This way everyone brings something special and “equal” to the table.

Nonetheless, my personal take on getting a technical co-founder is that if you have a good enough idea, you don’t need one. The pros of having someone work on the minimum viable product for “free” is outweighed by the cons of diluting your shares and working with someone who may not share your risk appetite.

だから、もしあなたにビジネスマインドがあり、共同創立者を引き入れたいと思うなら、資金、独占的なコンタクトや内部情報といった特別なセールスポイントを準備しておく必要がある。そうすれば誰でも特別な何かを持って来て、対等の地位でテーブルに着く。

とはいえ、個人的見解では、あなたが十分なアイディアを持ってさえいれば、技術的な共同創立者は必要ない。タダで多少有望な商品の開発に専念する誰かと組むメリットより、あなたの分け前が少なくなったり、リスクを取ろうとしない人と仕事をするデメリットの方が大きい。

I don’t believe in taking it slow and seeing how it goes. In the world of rapidly scaling tech startups , it is either go Big or go Home.

So, business people, while you think through your idea, figure out what you can offer to attract a technical partner. Or alternatively, raise enough money and hire your technical help.

慎重に事を進めたり、どうなるか見守ったりするのは私の信条ではない。めまぐるしく変わる技術系新興企業の世界では、大きく成長するか、荷物をまとめて故郷に帰るかのどちらかだ。

だから、実業家は、自分自身のアイデアを練るときは、技術パートナーを惹きつけるために何をオファーするかも考えなければならない。さもなければ、十分な資金を工面して技術支援スタッフを雇うかだ。
