At the head of the company all this time has been a young president who was effectively born into the job and has little experience in crisis management: Akio Toyoda, the grandson of the company's founder. For a decade, while the automaker was being run by professional managers, Akio rose up the corporate ladder without making much of a mark. Thrust into the presidency in 2009, he immediately had to cope with a global recession, massive recalls, and a deadly tsunami. Auto production plummeted, and at the same time Toyota lost its most important competitive advantage: its reputation for exceptional quality.

If, Wayne Gretzky ("the great one"), now the highest scoring hockey player in history, makes a mistake on the ice his coach doesn't scream at him or pull him from the game. The coach knows that Gretzky's desire to excel is so high that any extra negative pressure runs the risk of demotivating him. Instead, the coach may give some direction about what Gretzky may want to do the next time he is in such a situation.

However, what is formerly recognizable as New Media art today is met with an abundance of different understandings and definitions and thus Manovich’s principles lose some, if not all, of their traction in cooperating with the expanding term. In an online article published this year focused on such concerns, artist Brian Khek nicely summarizes the amalgamated term as it exists today,
“I think it’s also important to remember that New Media art isn’t limited to digital or online works either.

The large range of works produced within this latter type of art making yield a multitude of intentions, aesthetics, and philosophies, all with varying levels of self-awareness and criticality. Because, the practices within this type of art making are largely divergent they ask for some clarification through a defining term, and it is here, one might recall Lev Manovich and his ambitious blueprint consisting of five basic principles for what constitutes and determines what we would previously consider to be “New Media” artworks (a well organized method for clarification and identification using numerical representation, modularity, variability, automation and transcoding as defining points).

Now Gates uses his considerable talents to help run the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, dispensing an endowment of over $30 billion and tackling issues of global health and development, as well as a US program that focuses on education, health and other issues. Expect Gates to be as consumed with the work of the Foundation as he was at Microsoft.

For many of us, however, Gates will always be the brilliant geek who founded Microsoft, that helped to popularize the PC, and that brought the Windows OS to billions of computer users across the world. Might Gates one day return to the company he created? He says not.

When it comes to the future, they 'get it', and we don't. Technically literate and intellectually elitist, Gates was and is a sign of the leaders to come. To some in Microsoft he was a mystical, almost religious figure (indeed he remains so to many, despite his departure from the business), while to others in the industry he was the Antichrist. Both views are outrageous, but underline just how powerful his influence has been. (With all the hullabaloo about alleged abuses of monopoly power, it is easy to forget that back in the 1970s, IBM, too, was the target of antitrust investigations. Yet, memory fades. Some people have come to regard Big Blue as almost saintly compared to Microsoft.
