In Southeast Asia, no platform with cross-border mass market appeal exists to service the unbanked and under-banked, who still form the majority of populations in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam (PDF link).

But a few companies are trying. Here’s a roundup of 10 payment-related startups in the region that show promise:

だが少数だがそのような試みをしている企業もある。以下、将来有望な、この地域の決済関連のスタートアップ10社をまとめてお伝えする。

HocMoi is a new startup bringing foreign online courses to Vietnam

There’s quite a few less-than-one-year-old startups in Vietnam these days, and education is one sector which is starting to see startups make an entry. We’ve written about two of them: DeltaViet, which is empowering local teachers to run online courses, and Classbook, which is manufacturing a tablet for children’s education. Now HocMoi, a new competitor to the online course arena, has entered the ring.

ベトナム国内には最近生まれてから1年足らずのスタートアップが相当数あり、教育はスタートアップさ参入を試みている分野の１つだ。記者らはこれまで、そのような2社を取材してきた。1社はDeltaVietで、オンライン授業を行なうために地元の教師を支援している。もう1社は児童教育用のタブレットを製作しているClassbookだ。そして今、オンライン授業分野に新たに参入してきたのが競合会社のHocMoiだ。

HocMoi works with companies like Udemy, which specializes in selling skills courses online, and pays a licensing fee for the content, then HocMoi has a content team which translates the courses into Vietnamese. Founder of HocMoi, Tran Ngoc, says one of the problems he has seen is Vietnamese experts are not so forthcoming about their expertise.

Since the culture of sharing is not exactly there yet, HocMoi is working on seeding content from foreign courses first. Currently, we only have three Vietnamese courses of the total 31 that we are offering. The rest is all from sites like Udemy.

「共有するという文化は当地ではあまり根付いていないため、 HocMoiは、先ず外国の授業から内容を植え付けることから取り組んでいます。全31コースのうちベトナム語で提供しているコースは3コースのみです。他は全てUdemyのようなサイトからのコースです。

HocMoi , which means “new learning”, is different from DeltaViet in that it takes foreign courses and puts them online. The latter startup, on the other hand, focuses on getting Vietnamese courses on its platform.

Since HocMoi’s August launch, the site has accumulated just over 100 paying users on the site. In contrast, DeltaViet has over 500 paying students. This likely indicates that the market for online courses remains small, so at present it’s not clear yet if HocMoi or DeltaViet will be successful. Still, the need for education in Vietnam is palpable: education in Vietnam is struggling to keep up with the global trends and an economy that is in desperate need of an educated workforce.

HocMoiは8月のローンチ以来、サイトの有料登録ユーザ数は100名を超えている。一方、DeltaVietは500名を超える有料登録の学生を擁している。このことはオンライン授業の市場は依然として規模が小さいことを示しており、現在のところHocMoi やDeltaVietの事業の成功は定かではない。だが、ベトナムにおける教育の必要性は明白だ。ベトナムにおける教育は高学歴労働力が絶対的に必要な国際的潮流や経済に追いつくのに悪戦苦闘しているためだ。

Unfortunately, it’s not clear yet if such models can scale. Unlike DeltaViet, which collects over 90 percent of its revenue from telco scratch cards, HocMoi collects 100 percent of its money from the local NganLuong payment platform. Both models still have not gained widespread traction, and this will continue to be a limiting factor in online education as a whole.

残念ながらそのようなモデルが拡大し得るかどうかはまだ明らかではない。電信会社のスクラッチカードから収益の9割以上を得ているDeltaVietと違い、HocMoiは地元のNganLuong決済プラットフォームから100％利益を得ている。両モデル共、まだ広いトラクションを得ておらず、全体的にオンライン教育は、引き続き成長が制限された部門になりそうだ。

Singapore firm Prototype Asia sees potential in prototyping market

Singapore-based 3D printing and prototyping startup Prototype Asia shares more about current challenges, next steps and how investors think there’s a bubble.

Is 3D printing the next big thing or will it just be a bubble? Awareness of the industry is on the rise here in Singapore, with startups like Pirate3D getting its consumer-centric printer successfully crowd funded on Kickstarter and Nanyang Technological University gearing toward the age of manufacturing with a US$30 million research centre.

シンガポールの企業Prototype Asia、プロトタイピング市場に可能性を模索

シンガポールに本社を置く３Dプリントとプロトタイプ作成のスタートアップPrototype Asiaが現在の課題、次のステップ、バブルに対する投資家の見方についてさらに意見を述べている。

３Dプリントは次代の目玉となるのか、それとも単なるバブルに過ぎないのか。ここシンガポールで３D業界が安定した伸びを見せていることを認識して、Pirate3D等のスタートアップは、消費者中心のプリンターでKickstarter、南洋理工大学などから首尾よくクラウド・ファンディングを調達し、3000万米ドルの研究センターで製造の時代に向けて準備をしている。

e27 got the opportunity to talk to and engage Guillaume De Lazzer, Founder and Director, Prototype Asia, in a discussion on the challenges in 3D printing and prototyping services, a market still in its nascent stage.

De Lazzer, originally from France, has spent some eight years in Asia. He initially started the firm with his partner, Bernoit Valin, as a software distribution company in 2010 but pivoted to work on prototyping and 3D printing services a year back. Since day one, the company has been surviving on being bootstrapped.

フランス出身のDe lazzer氏は約8年間で過ごした。氏は元々パートナーのBernoit Valin氏と2010年にソフトウェア配布会社を設立したが1年前から、プロトタイピングと３Dプリントサービスへの取り組みを基軸に置いている。その初日から同社は自力でやりくりしてきた。

They first started when prototyping services in Singapore were not popular or a common sight. There was a huge, untapped market.

He said, “We have done electronics before, we have done mechanics, we have done software and I don’t understand why nobody has done prototyping.”

The team had worked with computer systems like Raspberry Pi and Arduino, so electronics and software were not issues.

De lazzer氏らが事業を開始した当時、シンガポールではプロトタイピング・サービスはあまり人気がなく、ありふれた仕事ではなく、未開拓の巨大市場だった。

「弊社ではこれまで電子機器や機械、ソフトウェアを扱ってきました。なぜ誰もプロトタイピングをやろうとしなかったのか理解できません。」と氏は語る。

同社のチームは Raspberry PiやArduino等のコンピューターシステムを扱っていたため、エレクトロニクスやソフトウェアには問題はなかった。

Lending expertise to clients

With startups, bigger companies and advertising agencies as clients, Guillaume found the same problem facing all three. Prototype Asia has quite a good mix of customers, and is able to help users improve ideas and make feasible items. He said, “They have an idea about hardware but don’t really know how to [launch their idea] so we help them with that. We help them with proof of concept so they can show to investors. Later on, we can help them with production prototype.”

For the big guys, it’s not that different. Prototype Asia has both the speciality and experience to help the corporate companies, which might not have the expertise in building hardware.

Guillaume氏は、スタートアップ、大規模企業、顧客としての広告代理店、三者全てが直面している同じ問題を発見した。Prototype Asiaは顧客がかなり混在しており、ユーザのアイデアを改善し、実現可能な商品製作に力を貸すことが出来る。「顧客の皆さんは、ハードウェアに関してアイデアをお持ちですが、＜アイデアに着手する方法＞がわからないのです。そこで弊社はその点を支援しています。概念の実証を示して支援するため、顧客の皆さんはそれを投資家に示すことが出来ます。その後、弊社は生産の試作品を作って支援します。」と氏は述べた。

大企業向け支援も大差はない。Prototype Asiaは、ハードウェア構築の専門知識を持っていない可能性のある企業支援の専門知識と経験を持ち合わせている。

Most of the time, these clients do not just come in to print a prototype. The process starts with the client who books an appointment and explains what his or her idea is about. Prototype Asia then tries to see if there are similar products and gauge the client’s interest.

Later, De Lazzer and his team will access whether the client’s idea is reasonable and deliverable, and come up with a timeline for the prototyping process. After providing the client with a quotation, Prototype Asia then moves on to the project.

大抵、このような顧客はプロトタイプの印刷のためだけには来ない。一連の作業は予約を取った顧客と共に開始し、顧客のアイデアを聞くところから始まる。Prototype Asiaは、話を聞いてから類似の製品がないかどうか確認し、顧客の関心度を測定する。

その後、DE lazzer氏と彼のチームは、顧客のアイデアが合理的で完了が可能かどうかを検討し、プロトタイプ作成プロセスのスケジュールを作成する。顧客に見積もりを提供した後でPrototype Asiaはプロジェクトに移る。

Current challenges

Starting out in an industry that is still nascent, there are many challenges Prototype Asia has to overcome.

One of the challenges they are facing is to find investors for new markets. Investors are worried 3D printing is going to be the next bubble, like what happened with the Internet bubble.

未だ揺籃期にある業界で事業に乗り出したPrototype Asiaには克服すべき課題が多くある。

直面している課題の１つは、新市場に投資してくれる投資家を見つけることだ。投資家はインターネットバブルの時に起こったように３Dプリン後が次のバブルになるのではないかと懸念しているためだ。

Does De Lazzer think it’s the next bubble? “It’s hard to say. I understand their concerns, but I think it could be the next bubble. If there are too many people throwing too much money into it, especially if for professional printers, it’s quite a lot of money to get in,” he said. However, as with any other industry, there is a certain level of risk involved. If investors are afraid and fail to see the potential of this growing economy within prototyping and 3D printing services, innovation and growth will be hindered.

De Lazzer氏は３Dプリントが次代のバブルだと考えているのだろうか。「それは何とも言えません。投資家の方々の心配は理解できますが、これは次のバブルだと思っています。余りにも多くの投資家が特に専門的なプリンターに余りにも多額の資金を投入すれば、巨額の資金が集まることになります。」と氏は述べる。だが他の業界同様、ある程度のリスクはつきものだ。もし投資家が懸念からプロトタイピングと３Dプリントサービスの成長を続ける経済の潜在的な可能性を見ずに終われば、技術革新や成長の妨げになる。

While a printer can cost anything above US$70,000, the amount for creating a prototype will vary from a couple of hundreds to several thousands depending on the size of the project.

Hiring also comes as a challenge. Currently with only three full-timers, it has been difficult to hire people who are open to different aspects of prototyping. One issue is they have trouble finding the right people who can focus on both the hardware and software aspects of prototyping. Many people he met in Singapore have also shown that they do not want to work in unfamiliar fields. However, the company is not desperate to fill those positions.

One other challenge he faced was to get his hands on resources. Many of the tools they require for design, programming and electronics run on Windows platform. To overcome this, they sign up for Microsoft BizSpark* which provides them easy access to Windows and its software development tools.

Next steps

In the next one year, Prototype Asia will be growing their team and prototyping capabilities by adding more 3D printers and machines.

De Lazzer cited they do not have competitors in Singapore or in Southeast Asia yet; however, there are similar companies in Europe and the US. One would be Stratasys, which has opened its Singapore office on October 1.

At the recent Inside 3D Printing Conference which was held in Singapore, it is evident that the growing interest signifies an impending boom of 3D printing and prototyping services.

De Lazzer氏は、今のところまだシンガポールや東南アジアには競合会社はないと述べたが、欧欧米には同種の企業が存在する。その1社Stratasysが10月1日にシンガポールに事務所を開設するという。

最近シンガポールで開催された３Dプリント会議を見ても、高まる関心が、近い将来３D印刷やプロトタイプ作成サービスのブームが起こることを示しているのは明らかだ。

Enter Verbase, a new player in the general search engine space hailing from Hong Kong. Verbase uses Yahoo’s API to gather results, and sorts them using a custom algorithm created by founder Antoine Sorel. He calls it a “user-ranking” algorithm, which basically means results are sorted based on users’ level of engagement rather than just popularity and keyword relevancy. On Google, Sorel says, “You’ll see the most popular results at the top, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they have the best information.” For example, Verbase will keep track of time spent and the level of interaction with a website instead of just counting hits.

Pros and cons

Verbase features a few other perks to lure in users. No advertisements appear in the search results, although they will eventually along the right side of the page.

Too much advertising on a page will actually lower a website’s ranking. Users can add their own results, which could be useful for new websites. They can also start forum conversations around any keyword, and invite others to take part and add text, video, links to social media, and create live events.

Verbaseは他にもいくつかユーザーを勧誘するサービスを呼び物にしている。検索エンジンに広告は表示されない。と言っても結局ページ右側に現われるのだが。

ホームページに広告が多すぎると、実際、ウェブサイトの順位を落としてしまうことになる。ユーザーは自分の検索結果を追加できるため、新しいウェブサイトにとっては便利だ。またどのキーワードについても掲示板での会話を開始でき、他のユーザーに参加を誘ったり、テキスト、動画を追加したり、ソーシャルメディアにリンクしたり、ライブイベントを作成したりすることも出来る。

The acquisition makes sense for the Hulu-like LeTV, which has been creating original content for its users. Its subsidiary LeVision partly produced and distributed this year’s controversial Tiny Times and Tiny Times 2 movies. The first of that movie series streamed for free on LeTV this summer.

Now You Can Order Dishes on WeChat

Micro-life Membership Card is an official WeChat account operated by Tencent’s lifestyle e-commerce service Micro-life. It started offering digital membership cards authorized by merchants on Micro-life’s own website directly on WeChat from mid-2012.

Now the Micro-life account launched a new version, named X1, that supports customized offerings, payments and services for merchants to do mobile CRM. Now users can click open a restaurant saved through Micro-life, make an order and pay for it without leaving WeChat.

Micro-lifeのメンバーズカードはTencentのライフスタイルeコマースサービスであるMicro-lifeが運営する公式WeChatアカウントだ。同社は2012年半ばより、WeChatのMicro-lifeが直接所有するウェブサイト加盟店により認定されたデジタル会員カードの提供を始めた。

今、Micro-lifeのアカウントは、カスタマイズされたサービス、支払い、および加盟店のモバイルCRM（顧客関係管理）をサポートするX1という新バージョンをローンチした。ユーザーはMicro-lifeに保存されたレストランをクリックして開き、注文し、WeChatから出ずに支払いをすることが出来る。

McDonald’s was one of the first on Micro-life platform that was able to issue e-coupons or deals and accept payments for purchases.

Next, X1 will support KTV reservations. At the same time, Micro-life is working on moving department stores onto WeChat.

Micro-life now has 30 million users, one thousand brand partners and has issued 50 million WeChat membership cards, accroding to Geng Zhijun, lead of the division (in Chinese). Their goal is to have 80 million users by the end of this year and generate one billion yuan in monthly transaction. Micro-life takes transaction-based commissions. It is reported that it charges merchants an average of several thousand yuan a year.

McDonald’sはEクーポンやバーゲン商品の発行や購入の支払いの受け入れが出来た最初のMicro-lifeのプラットフォームの１つだった。

次に、X１はKTVの予約をサポートすると同時に同時にMicro-lifeは百貨店をWeChatに移行するように取り組んでいる。

同社の広報担当Geng Zhijun氏によれば、現在Micro-lifeは3000万のユーザー、1000のブランド提携会社を擁し、5000万枚以上のWeChat会員カードを発行している（中国語）。
同社の目標は今年中にユーザー数8000万人、毎月の取引額10億元を達成することだ。Micro-lifeは取引ベースの手数料を課している。報道によると、1年間に1加盟店当たり平均数千元の手数料を課しているとのことだ。
