The Snapchat problem

The average person under 25 is texting more each day than the average person over 55 texts each year, Gladwell says. That’s what the data can tell us.

What it can’t tell us is why.

“The data can’t tell us the nature of the behavior,” Gladwell said. “Maybe it’s developmental … or maybe it’s generational.”

Developmental change, in Gladwell’s story, is behavior that occurs as people age. For instance, “murder is a young man’s game,” he said, with almost all murders being committed by men under the age of 25. Likewise, dying in a car accident is something that just “statistically doesn’t happen” over the age of 40. In other words, people age out of developmental changes — they are not true long-term lasting shifts in behavior.

Generational change, on the other hand, is different. That’s behavior that belongs to a generation, a cohort that grows up and continues the behavior. For example, Gladwell said, baby boomers transformed “every job in America” in the ’70s as they demanded more freedom, greater rewards, and changes in the boss-employee relationship.

The question is whether Snapchat-style behavior is developmental or behavioral.

“In the answer to that question is the answer to whether Snapchat will be around in 10 years,” Gladwell said.

Working the ‘wow': 4 essential principles for making productivity apps pop

Step aside Starbucks and Spotify, it is mobile productivity’s moment to shine with “wow” moments that inspire delight and emotion.

The best business apps and productivity tools elevate and liberate us in much the same way some top consumer apps do – by helping solve unexpected problems in the moment, like having a key piece of information surface at just the right time. Or better yet, when something that in another era was cumbersome and annoying to accomplish becomes drop dead simple to do.

But it’s not easy to take the hassle out of work and life headaches and do it in a way that makes customers devoted and passionate about your product. It takes a keen eye for design, all the technical chops necessary for scale, and a laser-focus on innovation in service to the customer. The best productivity tools don’t even seem like work. Here are four principles that are at the core of some of the top productivity apps in the marketplace today:

1. Start with the basics — and make them even more basic. Many of the best productivity apps are helping with basic tasks like note-taking, but they make them even easier. The “wow” of Evernote landed for me the first time I took a note and saw that it included where and when I was jotting it down, making it even easier to refer back to at any time.

I still love Evernote, but the crowded marketplace for such tools underscores the importance of continually innovating. One way Evernote is focused on innovating right now is by making sure it is available anywhere, anytime, on any device.

Getting information about a flight delay or traffic problem when you’re heading to an important business meeting doesn’t make the problem any less annoying for sure, but wow, how cool is it that Google is thinking ahead so I don’t have to. Google Now, in its current state is already a terrifically intuitive mobile assistant.

But keeping it fresh and on the leading edge of innovation in the mobile personal assistant space is hugely important to Google. At its developer conference this spring, executives demo’d upcoming features aimed at making it even more powerfully productive, including “Google Now on tap” – which relies on machine learning to make your phone that much smarter, to get things done quicker, and in fewer steps.

3. Provide instant gratification. For users, expense report apps like Concur or Expensify are magical: I can snap a picture of a receipt while I’m traveling and file an expense report in just a few clicks. The emotional payoff comes in not having a pile of receipts to go through upon returning from a business trip. For companies that adopt such apps for the enterprise, the “wow” has even bigger potential – to streamline processes through digitization, easing the burden on employees, and perhaps even resulting in a bonanza of new data about corporate expenditures.

4. Test, measure, iterate. Great mobile experiences get better through constant testing, measurement, and iteration. While some companies choose to build their own testing and analytics platforms, at DocuSign we leverage third-party tools that make it fast and easy to test and measure, such as Usertesting.com, Optimizely, and Mixpanel.

GrabTaxi’s motorcycle service rides into its third city, offers free rides in Jakarta

GrabTaxi today launched its motorcycle taxi service GrabBike in Jakarta, with free rides on offer until the end of this month. Grabtaxi’s motorbike service first appeared in Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi in Vietnam last year, making Indonesia’s capital its third trial destination. It does seem appropriate, given Jakarta’s infamous traffic situation. Informal motorcycle taxis, known as “ojek” in Indonesia, can be found on every street corner.

Meet TunnelBear, the gorgeous VPN app that wants to bring online privacy to everyone

Virtual private networks, or VPNs for short, have emerged as key tools in the battle for online privacy. This is a battle Canada-based TunnelBear has been helping with over the past few years with a cross-platform app that shields your location and identity on the web.

Today, TunnelBear is bringing its encryption technology to Google’s Chrome browser with a new lightweight extension that lets you flip your browsing into anonymous mode in seconds.

How Facebook’s cold storage preserves your old photos

Facebook has done a whole lot of work in order to keep your oldest and least popular photos neatly tucked away and ready to be served up whenever people want to look at them. Today Facebook is opening up about many of the ideas its infrastructure team has implemented in the two cold storage facilities it maintains at its data centers in Oregon and North Carolina.

People share 2 billion photos on Facebook’s services every day, so Facebook needs to store them efficiently. And Facebook has made improvements on hardware and software to deal with that scale.

A pair of entrepreneurs based in Seattle hopes that people will turn to their app, Pixotale, when they have a story they want to tell that revolves around photos. After testing it out, I’d say it feels like a mix of Instagram and Medium, with a hint of one of those travel diary apps thrown in.

Robert Mao started Pixotale last summer with business partner Li Haitao. They both hail from China and are both former employees of Microsoft Research. It’s Mao’s first US-based startup, but he has entrepreneurial experience with two startups in China before his stints with Microsoft Research in the US and Europe.

The decision makes a lot of sense if you consider the company’s debut of the Facebook Messenger platform during its F8 developer conference last month. Facebook wants to turn Messenger into its own ecosystem, and that means it needs a proper app on all major platforms.

This isn’t the first time Facebook has experimented with desktop apps: The company launched a standalone Messenger app for Windows in March 2012 and a Messenger app for Firefox in December 2012. Both were discontinued in March 2014.

A web app that works across browsers on Windows, Mac, and Linux certainly makes more sense. Still, while the Facebook Messenger platform has a lot of potential, it also has a lot to prove, both on mobile and the web.

Data: Best programming talent in the world is not in California

If you had to name the best place in the world to find top programmer talent, you’d probably say California, right? But we recently found some compelling data that shows that’s not the case. In fact, not only does California not rank as the top U.S. state for programming talent, but the U.S. doesn’t even rank as the top country.
