Because of Iceland’s position on the mid-Atlantic ridge, the blood of the Earth boils up through its soil, in the form of countless volcanoes and hot springs. At the other extreme, glaciers and ice fields are a huge part of the Icelandic scenery. I came unprepared for ice-climbing or any other feat requiring Viking stamina, but was still able to explore some of the country's more accessible natural wonders.

In Reykjavik, my friend Marta and I booked an excursion called "horses and hot springs". The tour company drove us out into the Icelandic countryside –

if the scrubby, treeless expanses surrounding Reykjavik can be described with the same word you might use for rolling English pastures. (In fact, the lava fields of Iceland are so desolate that NASA astronauts have practiced moon landings there.) At the riding center, we donned fleece-lined jumpsuits with reflective bands - on top of our double layer of clothes, coats, scarves, gloves- plus a helmet over our hats. "We look like obese space invaders!" shrieked Marta.
She then waddled out into the wind, which was driving the thermometer to 18 degrees (Celsius) below zero. Our horses were sturdy little mounts.

A girl often dreams about myriads of silver-white Lycoris in full bloom.
One day, on the way home with her older brother-like relative, Tomoyuki, the girl encountered an accident in the subway station. Amidst the chaos, she witnessed a commotion between a vampire with eyes in the color of the blood red ruby, and a foxspirit.　Without any warning, the two started to lay claims on the girl. Tomoyuki struggled to protect the girl, but his powers as a human is futile against the mythical beings.

Two middle-aged students take their old teacher out to dinner, and he gets thoroughly drunk and is overtaken by sadness. We are alone in life, he tells them. Always alone. He lives with his daughter, who takes care of him, who has never married, who will be left all alone when he dies. He tells Hirayama, the hero of "An Autumn Afternoon," to avoid the same mistake: Marry his daughter now, before she is too old.
"Ummm," responds Hirayama. He reveals no apparent emotion. He lives at home with a son and daughter, and she waits on both of them. Another son is married. He considers his teacher's sorrowful advice.

At his office, a young women his daughter's age is getting married. Perhaps the old man is correct. The night of the dinner, the students take their teacher home. They find he and his daughter now run a noodle shop, and she is fed up with him for getting drunk again. She cares for her father, but is trapped and unhappy.

From time to time I return to Ozu feeling a need to be calmed and restored. He is a man with a profound understanding of human nature, about which he makes no dramatic statements. We are here, we hope to be happy, we want to do well, we are locked within our aloneness, life goes on.

For decades, people have been coming to this country, and following the pineapple trucks up to the nearest four-star. Usually, it was enough to have a view of the Pacific, or ringside seats next to some billowing volcano. Nowadays, some of the best places are right out in the wilds, on land once thought habitable only to crocodiles and cowboys. But are these places really fit for royalty or just Indiana Joneses? It was time to set off, into the wilds.

I began gently, in the Central Highlands. Although the capital, San José, isn’t famously inspiring (pastel suburbs festooned in cables), within a few miles the great garden begins. My first lodge was perched high up in the coffee, at 4,000ft. With its own jungle and Art Deco ramparts, Finca Rosa Blanca (1) feels as though it’s been here for ages, and yet it hasn’t. Forty years ago, this mountainside was just a churned up motocross track. Its salvation might well be a metaphor for that of Costa Rica. Once facing ecological ruin, now a third of the land is protected, and it’s home to 5% of our planet’s species.

The market in center of Stanley, on the south side of Hong Kong Island, is just one of many reasons to visit this little seaside village. The call Stanley the "market for beginners" because there’s less haggling, it is a little less aggressive and perhaps a bit more pleasant for those feeling intimidated by the overwhelming atmosphere in Kowloon. That’s not to say you can’t get a deal, but this really is for the tourists. The good thing is their choice of souvenir shopping is bar none, so if you want something to take home, it isn’t a bad idea to look here first. Finish off your tour of Stanley with some dim sum, a visit to a temple, and a walk along the beach; it’s a Hong Kong must.

Sheung Wan is probably my favorite neighborhood in Hong Kong; it has that rich, urban feel that reminds me of other world capitals like New York. It’s probably the most Chinese of all the areas on the island; a walk along the zig-zag of alleyways and streets makes that perfectly clear in no time. On Cat Street there is an "antiques" market which is kind of fun to check out; here you’ll find things like old parchment scrolls, lucky coins, and miniature statues as far as the eye can see. These are not relics from centuries gone by, though – they’re (almost) all recent reproductions made in mainland China.

The general story is familiar, perhaps even predictable, to anyone who has ever read about child stars, but seldom has it been told with such intimacy and immediacy. Few people can ever have reflected on the fate of child stars as thoroughly as Cary, or had as much reason to do so, and her unique insight gives the film a vibrancy few documentaries about silent cinema can match. There is no one else alive able to articulate the experiences she discusses.
To her, Baby Peggy is another human being, a role she performed, to be spoken about in the third person. This is unsurprising, given the gulf between the infant who was onscreen in the 1920s and the elderly woman who looks back at her from the 21st Century.

But what is surprising is that she thought of Baby Peggy as a separate person even when she was a child. Even at four-years-old she knew the responsibilities attached to playing Baby Peggy, onscreen and in life, and she knew that made her something more, and something less, than a child. "I thought I was a grown-up," she says. "I knew I was the breadwinner."
Forty years later, looking at her young son, she felt surges of resentment towards him because he was simply sitting and playing on the floor of their house. Why, she wanted to demand of him, was he not out working? The psychological cost of being Baby Peggy was severe.

Taking up exercise in your 60s will still help stave off major ill health and dementia, research suggests.

The study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine followed 3,500 healthy people at or around retirement age.

Those who took up exercise were three times more likely to remain healthy over the next eight years than their sedentary peers.

Exercise cut the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease and depression.

People who took up exercise in their 60s were also less likely to struggle with day-to-day activities such as washing and dressing.


After eight years of follow-up, a fifth of the participants were defined as healthy - not suffering from any major chronic mental or physical illness.

This group was largely made up of people who always exercised and relative newcomers to exercise. Few were people who did no exercise at all.

Doing regular exercise throughout your life is ideal, say the researchers, but there are health benefits to be had even if you are a late starter.

Lead investigator Dr Mark Hamer, from University College London, said: "The take-home message really is to keep moving when you are elderly.

In the study, those who had regularly indulged in moderate or vigorous physical activity at least once a week were three to four times more likely to be healthy agers than those who had remained inactive, even after taking into account factors such as smoking.
