China’s travel booking leader Ctrip acquires overseas tourism site ToursForFun for over $100 million

Ctrip (NASDAQ:CTRP), the most popular site in China for booking flights and hotels, is shelling out over $100 million to make Chinese site for overseas travel ToursForFun part of its North American branch, according to TechNode.

ToursForFun specializes in tours and vacation packages for Chinese traveling abroad. Its destinations span 30 countries across North and South America, Asia Pacific, and Europe.

Ctrip established a North American branch last November in its attempt to expand to more overseas markets.

中国で最も人気の高い、フライトやホテル予約のできる旅行予約サイトであるCtrip（NASDAQ:CTRP）が、ToursForFunをCtrip北米支社の事業の一環として海外でのサイト構築のため1億米ドル以上で購入したと、TechNodeが伝えた。

ToursFurFunは中国人向けの海外ツアーやバカンス旅行のパッケージ販売に特化しており、北米、南米、アジア太平洋各国、またヨーロッパを含む海外30カ国への旅行事業を展開している。

Ctripは昨年の11月に海外事業の拡大をめざし、北米支社を立ち上げた。

ToursForFun is just the latest acquisition in Ctrip’s recent spending spree. Last year alone, it also invested in or bought out travel search engine Kuxun, hotel app Economy Hotel Manager, social trip sharing platform Chanyouji, and car rental services Yongche and eHi Car Services.

In December, Ctrip also partnered with popular taxi-hailing app Didi Dache, which just received a $100 million investment last week.

As China’s rising middle class gradually becomes more affluent, overseas travel is a new possibility for more and more families. China’s online travel bookings are expected to double by 2015.

Ctrip’s biggest domestic competitors are Qunar and eLong.

Ctripにとって中国国内での最大の競争相手は、Qunar とeLongである。

Eka Himawan, Co-founder and COO/CFO, Bilna pointed out that the decision to include Japan-based entertainment company TMS was driven by both “financial and strategic” reasons. He said, “It (TMS) has indicated will to increase presence in Indonesia, and actually, the media entertainment business is not just about production…but also about distributing the content and merchandise. This is an area we can mutually benefit.”

共同出資者であり、COO/CFOでもあるEka Himawan氏は、Bilnaが日本を拠点とするTMS Entertainment（TMS）を共同出資者として招いたのは、財務、また戦略上の理由によるものだと指摘した。
「TMS Entertainmentはインドネシアでの存在感を高める意思を我々に提示し、事実、メディア、エンターテイメントビジネスは生産するだけでなく、コンテンツを配給、販売しなければならない。そして、その分野で、我々はお互いに利益を得ることができる。」と彼は言及した。

With new funds, Himawan said that the team will be expanding into a new vertical, enlarge and modernise their warehouse to build a scalable operation that can withstand larger volumes. The new vertical is said to be disclosed in February, but he told e27 that “it will still be in e-commerce” and have a focus on “core customers”, who are females with families.

Founded in 2012, Bilna’s first full fiscal year saw one in three customers return for more purchases. Orders also hit a peak of more than 1,000 per day. The platform claims to market “close to 10,000″ stock keeping units, with “close to 500 international and local brands”.

In Indonesia, Bilna’s main competitor is Tororo, a new online store for baby products headed by Ken Dean Lawadinata, who is also the CEO of Kaskus, an Indonesian forum. However, in the region, there are e-stores such as Ta Em Be in Vietnam, and Singapore-based White As Milk, dealing with the vertical.

What made this animation special and original, was that this was created for older than junior and high school student. There was no such an SF animation before, and used to be for a children. I think this is a monumental work which have added a new dimension in the field of SF animation.
