Well then, suppose my car-repair man devised questions for an intelligence test. Or suppose a carpenter did, or a farmer, or indeed, almost anyone but an academic. By every one of those tests, I'd prove myself an idiot. And I'd be an idior, too. In a world where I could not use my academic training and my verbal talents but had to do something intricate or hard, working with my hands, I would do poorly. My intelligence, then, is not absolute, but is a function of the society I live in.

For instance, I knew a mechanic once, who, on these intelligence tests, could not possibly have scored more than 80, by my estimate. I always took it for granted that I was far more intelligent than he was. Yet, when anything went wrong with my car I rushed to him with it, watched him anxiously as he explored the inner workings of the engine, and listened to his conclusions as though they were wisdom from the gods - and he always fixed my car.

All my life I've been registering scores like that, so that I always feel that I'm highly intelligent, and I expect other people to think so, too. Actually, though, don't such scores simply mean that I am very good at answering a particular type of academic question - questions that are considered important by the people who make up the intelligence test - people who are intellectuals, just like me?

But in spite of her difficulties, she would lead a remarkable life. On hearing that she and other slaves on her farm were to be sold, she took her destiny into her own hands, and escaped to the north, leaving behind her husband, who did not want to go. Having traveled the Undergound Railroad herself, Harriet became one of the most successful guides. She made 19 trips south to help around 300 slaves escape to freedom. She was never caught .

Places where they could rest and sleep were called 'stations', and those who organized such sites were called ' station-masters'. One such conductor was the former slave, Harriet Tubman. As a slave, she endured years of inhumane treatment from her various owners.

These slaves undertook long and often extremely dangerous journeys to escape from the southern states of America in attempts to gain their liberty in the north. the routes were highly secretive, and those who were involved in the system used special words based on the language of genuine railways to protect themselves. Slaves who escaped (escapees) were known as 'passengers', or 'cargo'.
