It is fully operational but I have not tested the phono inputs because I do not have a record player. If you would like those inputs tested, please let me know and I will get a record player to test them for you. Although it is fully operational, it does slightly crackle when adjusting volume or pressing the switches. It probably needs a little lubricant on the contacts. The front plat has two minor bubbles on the face and some hairline cracks in the backing. the bubble and cracks are just in the black film behind the clear plastic. The plastic is not cracked at all. I believe it needs a bulb replaced for the backlight because the left side seems darker than the right. I can try to replace that if you request.

Pocket Gems Passes 40M Downloads After Pair of Hits Tap Zoo, Tap Pet Hotel

Sequoia-backed Pocket Gems said it surpassed 40 million downloads today mainly for its two hits Tap Zoo and Tap Pet Hotel. That’s up from 28 million three months ago.

More enviable though is the company’s consistent ranking atop the highest-grossing charts on iOS. Tap Pet Hotel has stayed within the top 13 grossing apps for the last month, while the company’s original hit Tap Zoo has hovered around third place.

Of course, the company didn’t comment on revenue figures.

He didn’t say how many games would come out soon, but he did hint they’re probably no longer animal-themed. Android titles are coming soon too. Pocket Gems has staffed up, with 40 hires this year.

The company, founded by Terry and his friend from college Harlan Crystal, was originally a side project that grew into a business. Terry and Crystal experimented on a number of concepts that were proven on the Facebook platform like farming games until they hit upon Tap Zoo, a casual sim game where players manage a zoo and buy animals.

Incentivized installs, where users can download apps in exchange for virtual currency, helped jumpstart the company back in 2009.

Terry said the company didn’t suffer too much of a revenue hit when Apple cracked down on the practice earlier this year. At the same time the platform began rejecting apps with offer walls, Pocket Gems launched Tap Pet Hotel, which more than made up for any negative financial impact.

“Tapjoy was important for us at the beginning, but it wasn’t a huge, huge thing this year,” Terry said. “We just had a large user base that’s been powerful and our brand is starting to stand on its own.”

Gareth Davis, platform manager at Facebook, gave a talk today at the Casual Connect game conference in Seattle about how to design the best social games.

The talk is based on watching thousands of social games come and go in the past few years. If game companies pay attention to the advice, they just might have a chance to challenge the social game industry’s leader, Zynga.

“My belief is that you can do good social design by taking the collective learnings of people on the platform,” Davis said.

Here are Davis’ tips on how to create the best social games.

2. Optimize for social discovery and distribution. Discovery is a huge problem, but Facebook itself has a lot of different ways to spread news about games, from the news feed to email messages.

Users play for free but pay real money for virtual goods. Merchandising means you should offer discounts or sales to users on a regular basis. And you should target certain virtual goods toward “whales,” or social gamers who will pay lots of money to climb to the top of the leaderboards in a game.

Lolapps Merges With 6waves, Seeks Out Funding

Ravenwood Fair developer Lolapps and Ravenwood Fair publisher 6waves announced a merger today that gives the combined company over 39.2 million monthly active and 4.4 million daily users, according to our traffic tracking service, AppData.

For the most part, development and publishing operations will function independently at each studio, while a deeper integration is planned for international release strategy and licensing agreements for Lolapps’ recently-acquired Fliso game engine.

“We’re still working out what’s going to happen with Fliso [licensing],” Sethi adds. He says that by joining forces, 6waves Lolapps now has a clear advantage over competitors in the rapidly expanding social games publishing space.
