The price went down from IDR 4,000 [US$0.29] to IDR 3,000 [US$0.21] per kilometer, a driver called Ope told Kompas (link in Indonesian).

Some drivers threatened to organize a strike, though it seems that strike never occurred on a large scale. When Nadiem Makarim, Go-Jek’s founder went on stage during the Tech in Asia Jakarta conference last week, he pointed out that only a few drivers were disgruntled by the changes and tried to instigate a boycott, but that most drivers accepted the decision and continued business as usual.

But this weekend, drivers once again turned to the media with new complaints about Go-Jek’s management decisions. According to Kompas, drivers are upset because of a IDR 40,000 [US$2.92] price cut taken from each of them, supposedly to cover for the helmet, jacket, and other items they are equipped with.

This was not part of the agreement, Go-Jek driver Fitrijansjah Toisutta, told Kompas. Fitrijansjah said at least 200 drivers were planning to strike and demonstrate in front of the Go-Jek headquarters and the ministry of manpower. The action was planned for November 16, 18, and 20.

Indeed it seems there was a small demonstration at Go-Jek’s offices today, albeit attended only by a few dozen drivers, not hundreds.

According to the report, the demonstrators were invited inside the headquarters for a meeting behind closed doors. The outcome of the meeting has not yet been made public.

Tech in Asia has reached out to Go-Jek for comment.

GMO Payment Gateway first teamed up with Neweb back in 2014, but the Japanese company has been active outside of East Asia too. Boston Dynamics has tested its LS3 quadruped (four-legged) robot out in natural settings in the past. But humanoid robots are different — they can be much taller and have a higher center of gravity. Keeping them moving on paved asphalt is one thing, but maneuvering them through rugged terrain, which is what Boston Dynamics’ Atlas robots dealt with recently during the DARPA Robotics Challenge, can be trickier.

The unexpected way data is changing sports teams

The idea that data plays a role on sports teams isn’t new, and the number of teams relying on data and the level to which they are doing so both seem to be growing. Perhaps one of the most memorable stories (largely because it made it to the big screen) was the unlikely success of Billy Beane and the low-budget Oakland A’s.

In addition to tickets, potential revenue sources for this service include bus advertisements, sales of goods and value-added services for riders, including designated seats. The service appears to be similar to Leap Transit, a San Francisco-based luxury bus service for commuters that is commercializing through higher-end services including WiFi connections, refreshments and leather seats.
However, whether the shuttle bus service will make headway in the Chinese market is still to be seen. Leap Transit has suspended operations after receiving a cease-and-desist order from local regulator due to a lack of proper permits, which means the Didi Bus is also facing regulatory risks in China.

Developing a viable 7-nanometer node technology has been one of the grand challenges of the semiconductor industry, IBM said. Pursuing such small dimensions through conventional processes has degraded chip performance and negated the expected benefits of scaling — or shrinking chips to get higher performance, lower cost and lower power requirements.

IBM said researchers feared that 7-nanometer chips would be out of reach due to fundamental barriers of technology. But IBM said it used new semiconductor processes and techniques pioneered by IBM Research. It capitalized on past innovations such as silicon germanium (SiGe), channel transistors, and Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) lithography integration at multiple levels. Those innovations helped IBM cut 50 percent of the chip size compared to the best 10-nanometer technology currently available.

Of course, it also helps that Taipei is known to be one of the most livable places in Asia, recently voted by CNN readers to be the best place for food, it also has great infrastructure, an excellent education system, and one of the lowest crime rates in the world.

Of the companies I spoke with, none seemed to find it difficult to manage their teams, although all mentioned that the typical Taiwanese engineer was not as outspoken or self-motivated as their Silicon Valley peers.

To solve this, PicCollage focused more on hiring for cultural fit, and created special employee training to boost creativity and to encourage them to be more vocal. Additionally, most Taiwanese developers seemed to have a sufficiently good grasp of English so that work communications proceeded smoothly, although most companies I spoke with did have someone who had some degree of Mandarin Chinese fluency in its core engineering team to facilitate the process.

The not-so-good: different approach to programming

However, founders should know that it is not all rainbows and roses. When Justin Lee, VP of engineering at Spoonrocket, arrived in Taiwan with the intention to build up an engineering team two years ago, he found most programmers had backgrounds in lower-level languages such as C and C++ but knew very little about application development due to the island’s overwhelming focus on hardware.

“It took longer than I expected to find people who suited our needs technically and were also eager to work for a startup,” he said.
