Chinese Internet Giant Tencent Eyes Indonesia Market

CyberAgent’s Net Impact Jakarta conference yesterday had a fun mixture of Japanese, Vietnam, and Chinese Internet companies. Among them was Tencent, whereby Sean Zhang, director of Tencent’s Mobile Global division, shared some background information about Tencent and also briefly spoke on the company’s plans to engage the Indonesian market.

Yes, you read that right. Tencent (HKG:0700) has set its eyes on Indonesia. In fact, Zhang shared on stage that Tencent already has a team of ten in Indonesia and is looking to hire more as it expands its operations.

昨日のCyberAgentが開催したNet Impact Jakartaコンファレンスは日本、ベトナム、中国のインターネット企業がいりまじり非常に楽しかった。その中にTencentも参加しており、同社のモバイルグローバル部門のSean Zhang氏が同社の参考情報を公開するとともに、インドネシア市場に対する参入計画について短時間の説明を行った。

その通り、Tencent（HKG:0700）はインドネシアに着目している。実際Zhang氏はステージ上で、同社がすでにインドネシア国内に10名からなるチームを擁しており、事業を拡大すべくさらなる人材を求めていることを認めたのである。

Smartly, Tencent noted that Indonesia is very much a mobile centric nation. The Chinese internet giant is thus planning to introduce the QQ browser (we reviewed the mac version here) and also a Whatsapp-like mobile app, Qute, to the Indonesia market.

I was actually puzzled why Tencent chose to bring in Qute rather than Weixin, a popular group messaging app in China, owned by Tencent. I threw that question during Q&A and got an interesting answer.

賢いことにTencentはインドネシアが実にモバイル中心の国であることを認識している。中国インターネット大手である同社はインドネシア市場に向けて（Macバージョンのレビューを掲載したばかりである）QQBrowserの導入を計画しているが、それとともに、WhatsappタイプのモバイルアプリケーションであるQuteも導入するつもりである。

私は実のところTencentが、中国で人気のメッセージングアプリケーションであるウェイシン（Weixin）ではなくQuteを起用することを選んだのか不思議に思っている。私は質疑応答の際にその点についての質問を投げ、実に興味深い答えを得た。

Zhang explained that Weixin is mainly used by high-end smartphone users who are on Android or iPhones. While Qute can be used for feature phone users, which constitutes a large group of people in Indonesia, where they can enjoy group messaging services even without data plans. That group messaging app resembles Pinch, a solution developed by Affle.

It is a pity that we couldn’t find more time with Zhang to learn more details on Tencent’s plan in Indonesia. But both of us agreed to meet again soon. Coincidentally (or unfortunately for him), we are staying in the same apartment complex in Jakarta which makes meeting up way easier! Stay tuned!

QQBrowser for Mac Launches, Goes Where Other Chinese Browsers Fear to Tread

Even though there are remarkably few people in China who use Apple’s Mac OS X, local social media giant Tencent (HKG:0700) has done what no other Chinese company has done before – make a web browser for Mac.

The brand-new QQBrowser for Mac has been built from the ground up for its new platform, so it doesn’t share too much with its popular Windows-version brethren. It comes with built-in support for Adobe Flash (as does Google’s Chrome browser these days), a choice of Chinese or English localization, and the marque feature is that it supports peer-to-peer (such as ed2k) and bit-torrent downloads. The browser defaults to using the company’s own Soso search engine, but you can switch that to Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU) or Google in the settings.

Aside from that, QQBrowser for Mac is really simple, and looks like Safari, mainly due to having its tabs below the URL bar, which now feels like a step backward having gotten used to them being on top (which is one of many reasons I use Firefox on my Mac, not Apple’s Safari). The ‘new tab’ page (pictured below) is simple as well, in the manner of Chrome’s, with only eight favourites appearing on my screen.

The button at the far right that looks like a list is actually a shortcut to the three main areas behind the scenes: history, bookmarks, downloads. Regrettably there aren’t any keyboard shortcuts for the latter two actions, so you’ve pretty much got to click that icon. The biggest quirk – ‘bug’ perhaps – of the QQBrowser for Mac is that if you double-click the tab bar, it minimizes the whole browser window, whereas your instincts might tell you that it’d be a useful way to open a new tab (as occurs with Firefox).

Baidu Now Offering Real-Time Search Results from Top 4 Chinese Microblog Services

Beginning this morning, Baidu began providing real-time search services from the top four weibo service, including Sina, Tencent, Netease and Sohu. In other words, the search results on Baidu will now include microblog posts from these four major Chinese Internet major portals’ microblog services. Baidu will even return up-to-date Sina Weibo content that matches keyword searches for breaking news or popular trending topics, and the real-time search result will be displayed near the top of the search engine results page.

Real-time information is always the most precious value provided by microblog service. Google wanted to acquire Twitter and later integrated Twitter’s real-time search result, which leaves me no surprise Chinese weibo services now partner with a leading search engine. Good news, indeed.

I thought that Baidu will now return real-time results on anything users search for, but I was wrong about it. As Kaiser Kuo, the Director of International Communications of Baidu clarified, the real-time results appear only when you search for breaking news or popular trending topics.

リアルタイム情報は常に、マイクロブログサービスによって提供される最も貴重な価値である。GoogleはTwitterの買収を望み、のちにTwitterのリアルタイム検索結果を統合したが、そのことを考えれば中国の微博サービスがトップ検索エンジンとパートナーシップを組むことは少しも驚きではない。実によいニュースである。

私は、今後Baiduがユーザーが検索しようとしているあらゆるものに対してリアルタイムの検索結果を返すようになるだろうと考えた。しかし、それは間違いであった。Baiduの国際コミュニケーション部長Kaiser Kuoが明言した通り、リアルタイム検索の結果は、速報ニュースおよびその時点で最も活発に語られているトピックについて検索した時にのみ、現れるのである。

That makes some sense, as people may more care about real-time updates on breaking news. The result page may looks messy if we return all real-time results for anything searched, Kaiser explained. Hm.. But still, I would suggest that at least Baidu could give a switch button which allows users to switch on/off real-time search.

Note that Sina Weibo officially launched its own search service last October. So how Sina is going to monetize its real-time information next?

As of now Tencent has opened up its Tenpay (Paypal like service), Paipai (similar to Taobao), Soso (search business), social networking services like Tencent Pengyou and QQ Zone, Tencent weibo, QQ Login, QQ Game Center, QQ Mail list and so on, and more products and services are expected to show up in the list.

After being the target of critics for lack of openness as well as cornering some partners at times to the verge of death, Tencent now wanted to shake things up and play it for real: to open up.

And the company that uses penguin as its mascot is not the only one decided to do so in the past year.

Pushing towards Mobile Front

Following Tencent’s partnership meeting, Baidu made available its mobile box computing platform in the end of June and also released a new homepage in its annual Baidu World conference in early September as the company spotted new opportunities in mobile search and tapped into the growth potential in opening up its homepage to web apps produced by 3rd party developers.
