Fixing drug research, one cell at a time

Fan went on a lengthy explanation of the broken drug research process and how it is due for a shake-up by bio 3D printing.

A typical research project can take anywhere between eight to 20 years, and it involves a tedious chain of events starting with chemical tests, then moving on to cellular, animal, and finally clinical trials involving people.

If the pursuit fails at any point of time, it’s basically goodbye to the billions of dollars and years of sweat that scientists have been pouring into the lab.

What makes the tests so cumbersome is that they often involve thousands of chemicals, and each one would need to be tested individually at different concentrations, dosage levels, and forms.

The animal testing stage is particularly gruesome and costly. Drugs could be injected into a baboon’s liver, for example, to test the effects of a chemical. If the baboon shows no ill effects, it is euthanized in the name of science and the liver extracted for study.

A bio 3D printer can dramatically save time and costs by reducing reliance on traditional cellular and animal testing.

どのように厄介な試験かというと、何千もの化学物質のそれぞれについて個別に、様々な濃度、投与量、投与法について調べる必要が生ずるのだ。

By laying out cells in three-dimensions as opposed to a 2D plane, which is the current practice, it mimics the human body more accurately, thereby potentially yielding more accurate results. One compound can be applied to multiple cells, drastically simplifying the process.

Bio 3D printers could eventually print entire organs, which means that instead of injecting compounds into animals, they can be applied to printed organs without the need to dissect critters.

A potential “killer app” would be to create a credit card sized microcosm of the human body containing a garden of cells that are linked on a cellular level. A chemical could then be injected into the kit to test its effects on various types of cells.

最近の研究で、平面上になるように細胞を立体的に広げることにより、より精密にヒトの身体を模することが出来るようになり、それによってより正確な成果を得るようになっている。

Bio 3D printerで最終的には全ての臓器をプリントできるようになれば、動物に合成物を注射をしたり、解剖することなくプリントされた臓器を用いることが可能になるだろう。

細胞レベルで繋がった細胞の菜園からなるヒト生体の小宇宙をクレジットカードサイズで作製できるようになる可能性も“killer app”は有している。本キットに化学物質を注入すれば、様々なタイプの細胞に対する作用を調べることができるようになる。

Besides selling these jet-black devices, Fan hopes to eventually manufacture ready-to-use human tissues in bulk and sell them to research bodies who don’t want the hassle of growing the organisms themselves. Fan’s startup is currently bootstrapping. The founders are not paying themselves yet, but they’d welcome a fundraising round.

The judges were concerned about how Bio3D can distinguish itself from competitors and win the market. Jimmy Rim of K-Cube Ventures asked whether 3D printing companies can easily replicate the technology. Fan responded by saying that printing living cells is vastly different from laying down plastic. The precision needed to print cells is also on a much more different scale.

Saemin Ahn of Rakuten Ventures asked about what the intellectual property is, and Fan clarified that their pending patent applies to the accurate construction of human cells using a combination of hardware and software. The process can also be extended to applications outside biology.

Khailee Ng, meanwhile, was concerned about how Bio3D can win the market against more well-funded competitors. Fan noted that the company’s business model is uniquely focused on building custom solutions for the researchers. And unlike its American and German competitors, which focuses on cells and human organs, Bio3D can print other biomaterials as well, allowing labs to study the interaction between bacteria and human cells.

Rakuten VenturesのSaemin Ahn氏からの知的所有権に該当するのは何かとの質問に対し、Fan氏はハードウェアとソフトウェアの組み合わせを用いたヒト細胞の精密な構築に関して、特許を申請中であると明らかにした。このプロセスは生物学の範囲外にも申請が及ぶ可能性も述べた。

一方、Khailee Ng氏はもっと資金が潤沢な競合相手にBio3Dが勝てるのかどうか疑問を呈した。Fan氏は「当社のビジネスモデルは、研究者のカスタムソルーションを構築する点においてユニークさを持っています。細胞や臓器に特化しているアメリカやドイツの競合相手とは異なり、Bio3Dはこの他のバイオマテリアルをもプリントすることが出来るので、バクテリアとヒト細胞間の相互作用の研究をする研究室にも対応できるのです。」と強調した。

So far, the company has completed its proof of concept phase with a basic platform that can handle low to moderate transaction levels. Next, they will develop a more robust platform, fully integrated with a local Indonesian bank. Ayoub says Artabit plans to be operational in the first half of 2014. They are currently securing the necessary licenses from regulators.

同社では現時点で、単純なものから中程度の業務レベルを遂行できるベーシックなプラットフォームを用いて、概念段階の証明を完了している。次のステップとして、地元のIndonesian bankと完全に統合させるための、更に堅牢なプラットフォームを開発することにしている。Artabitは2014年前半の操業を計画しているとAyoub氏は話している。同社は現在、監督機関より必要なライセンスを取得中である。

At Startup Arena, judge Naoshi Suzuku of Global Brain showed concern about Bitcoin’s legal and volatility issues. Judge Jimmy Rim from K-Cube ventures had some of the same concerns about resistance to change as Ayoub himself. Saemin Ahn then drilled Ayoub on what happens if the value of Bitcoin changes mid-transaction, which Artabit plans to offset with liquidity pools. Khailee Ng from 500 Durians told he liked the idea, but that his pitch “sucked.”

Like most countries, Indonesia is still in the very early stages of Bitcoin adoption, but Ayoub says people are gradually warming to it. “Because Bitcoin solves some of the typical problems of emerging and developing countries such as large unbanked population and restricted credit card access,” Ayoub says, “we anticipate that adoption will take places earlier in countries like Indonesia than in advanced economies like the US or Europe.”

Apart from using Bitcoins as a transactional tool, the recent surge in the Bitcoin price vis-a-vis the US dollar has made it an extremely attractive investment vehicle as well. One startup that has capitalized on this is BTC.sx, the first Bitcoin financial derivative. Founder Joseph Lee has identified three key characteristics that ensures Bitcoin’s place in investment portfolios. Firstly, the Bitcoin market is small in terms of capitalization, minimizing the barriers to entry and makes it easy for small players to buy in.

Harvest: Massive Encounter is a real-time strategy indie video game developed and published by Oxeye Game Studio. It was released on March 5, 2008. The game was awarded a second place in the Swedish Game Awards 2007
The game, regardless of mode, leaves the player with a small base with two power generators and three power links. The player would then use the starting money to begin mining operations and setting up defensive lasers. Depending on the game mode, various waves of aliens will approach. The player can build lasers and missile turrets to destroy them.

Harvest:　Massive EncounterはOxeye Game Studioが開発、販売するリアルタイム戦略シュミレーション・インディーズ・テレビゲームです。2008年3月5日に発売されました。　2007年にSwedish Game Awards で第二位を獲得しています。
このゲームは、モードに関係なく、2つのパワー・ジェネレーターと3つのリンクを備えた小型操作盤を使用することができます。プレイヤーは採掘操作を開始するためにスターティング・マネーを使用した後、防御レーザーの設定を行います。ゲーム・モードによって敵からの様々な波動が襲ってきます。プレイヤーはそれらを破壊するためにレーザーとミサイル砲塔を構築することができます。

Unfortunately, we have not yet been able to obtain all of the information necessary to comply with U.S. export regulations. There are two likely reasons for this delay:

フィリピンは現在原則として植物または植物生産物の輸入を許可なしに持ち込むことを禁止しています。“IMPORT PERMIT”は植物類輸入検疫条件を記載した書類で、添付の様式1を用いて申請し、様式2で発給される書面です。
日本側ではその内容に合致しているか輸出植物検査を行い、フィリピン側の提示した植物検疫要件を満たしている場合、検査合格として許可書の番号と（必要な場合）検疫要件を満たしている旨を追記した“PHYTOSANITARY CERTIFICATE”を発給します。

The Philippines ban importing of any plants or any plant products without their permission generally. The "IMPORT PERMIT" is the documents which listed the importing quarantine condition for plant subjects and is submitted using the formats Style 1 attached below, and would be issued with the format of Style 2 from the authority.
In Japan, the plant protection station will inspect the export plant subjects, and if the subjects meet the plant quarantine requirements that the Philippines showed, the number of the permit and (when necessary) the "PHYTOSANITARY CERTIFICATE" which added a postscript about fulfilled the requirements, will be issued as the guarantee of quality approved.

I just want to inform you, that I have great problems to get the M in time. I purchased M for € 6.500 three weeks ago, to have enough M on stock, also for you. Today B told me, a part will leave only tomorrow, but they can not say exactly how much and the rest in 2 weeks. Hopefully I will receive the first part this week to be able to ship to you immediately.
