Regarding your question,Japanese has not only 1byte but also 2 byte or 3 byte character. Did you set such a character in PHP? Or how about setting of alphabet only?
I am not so much familiar with PHP ,I am sorry if my answer misses point.

I think this is difficult problem, so that will be okay if it is not solved.
