Two of Xiaomi’s most high-profile executives, Hugo Barra and Bin Lin, have been interacting with the Indian junta not only via their social feeds, but also with meetups and gatherings. Barra recently hosted an impromptu fan meetup in Bangalore that saw a 45-member strong attendance on short notice.

India, Xiaomi’s second home?

To say that India could be Xiaomi’s second home isn’t unfair. After all, the company operates in a host of other markets including Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and of course, China, but few of them matched up to India’s performance.

Even after four sales rounds, Xiaomi Mi 3 hopefuls in India are left wanting. In a recent interview with Digit, Barra revealed its latest phone the Mi 4 would be launched in India by the end of this year, and that his goal is for “India to be together with China and all other key markets.”

WeChat reaches 438 million monthly active users as growth slows

Chinese web giant Tencent (HKG:0700) has just released its Q2 earnings report. We’ll look at the financials later, but first the number that we all want to see – Tencent’s messaging app, WeChat, is now at 438.2 million monthly active users (MAUs).

Social gaming tied to WeChat and QQ (Tencent’s old MSN-style instant messaging service) generated RMB 3 billion (US$487.4 million) in revenue in Q2.

That newest WeChat MAU figure is up from 396 million in Q1; it’s risen from 236 million at the same period last year. Here’s a chart of every MAU figure for WeChat that the company has ever released:

The first part of the edict says that messaging apps like WeChat should “further promote the healthy and orderly development of public information services, protect the legitimate rights and interests of citizens, legal persons and other organizations, and safeguard national security and public interests.” Towards the end, another point says that chat app users should “abide by laws and regulations, the socialist system, the national interest, citizens’ legitimate rights and interests, public order, social morality, and authenticity of information.”

There are also some specific new rules in today’s crackdown. The new provisions require messaging app companies to set up real-name registration for users (Update: A Tencent representative points out that ‘official’ accounts already require real-name signup accompanied by a photograph). Also, only approved media accounts with official WeChat accounts can post political news. There are still many vagaries in both those edicts. We’ve reached out to Tencent (HKG:0700), the maker of WeChat, for further details.

WeChat joins Weibo in being tightly controlled

China recently blocked two of the largest overseas messaging apps, such as KakaoTalk and Line. WhatsApp is not blocked, but it’s not commonly used in the country. WeChat is by far the nation’s top messaging app and is increasingly used as a broader social network for sharing news items and personal photos and thoughts.

WeChat, which grew popular in 2012, was initially remarkably free and uncensored – but that was back when it was mostly a person-to-person messaging app. But as the app itself expanded and people found new uses for it, authorities gradually weighed in on it. It’s been especially bad in the past few months. In March, WeChat was forced to clamp down on political content and ban the official accounts of several outspoken bloggers; then in May the app – and other messaging apps – had to stamp out what Xinhua called “illegal and harmful information” being spread.

Xiaomi teases new Redmi Note phablet, to be announced today (UPDATED: price & release date)

Xiaomi founder Lei Jun announced a new Redmi Note – called the Hongmi Note in China – will be unveiled today. The founder has leaked specs in two recent posts about the Chinese phone maker’s budget phablet on Weibo.

So far, Lei has revealed the new Redmi Note will have 4G connectivity, 5.5-inch screen, 3100mAh battery, 2GB RAM, and weigh 155 grams. That makes it 10 grams lighter than the previous version, but the battery is also 100mAh smaller.

WeChat Has Had 396M Monthly Active Users and 5.8M Public Accounts

WeChat monthly active users reached 396 million in more than 200 countries and regions as of this month (July 2014), WeChat disclosed yesterday at an event.

Public accounts, service accounts and subscription accounts, have reached 5.8 million since the public account system was launched in August, with 15,000 added daily. Sogou, the search service developer Tencent has a stake in, had indexed more than 4 million public accounts and their contents as of June 2014 since WeChat allowed it to, according to its latest earnings report released earlier this week.

WeChatの一月あたりのアクティブユーザ数が今月付け（2014年7月）で200カ国及び地域以上の合計で3億9600万人に達したと昨日、イベントにてWeChatが発表した。

It is estimated there are more than 10, 000 developers and 10, 000 app development companies are developing applications for WeChat public accounts — A handful of APIs, for functions such as speech recognition, are available for developers to build sophisticated features for public accounts. Since the first API was released in May 2012, 67,000 applications, including those for mobile payments, have been developed on top of WeChat public accounts.

90% of the qualified accounts run by businesses have introduced the mobile store system. It’s been only two months since it was launched. More APIs for speech recognition, image recognition, location positioning, etc. will be available for businesses to develop related features for their accounts, according to WeChat.
