Back in 2005, Thisnext pioneered the so-called social commerce business model, which mixed B2C with the rising trend of social networking that intensified by the rise of Facebook and MySpace. As usual, Chinese look-alikes were not far behind, and in 2006, social commerce was brought to the Middle Kingdom by sites such as Buykee.com.

2005年に遡るが、Thisnext はいわゆるソーシャルコマースのビジネスモデルの先駆けで、Facebook や MySpace の興隆で強化されたソーシャルネットワークが流行しつつあったトレンドとB2C を掛け合わせたものだった。例のごとく、中国のソックリサイトが大きく後れを取ることはなく、2006年にはソーシャルコマースがBuykee.com 等のサイトによって中国に持ち込まれた。

However, unlike the Chinese copycats that obtained enormous successes by transplanting American business models to China, Buykee.com failed miserably, closing its door merely a year or so after its founding. While other Chinese sites that mimicked Thisnext’s business model fared better than Buykee.com, most of them merely hang on for their dear life, with none finding successes they initially envisioned.

Across the Pacific, the tale couldn’t be more different. Much like other pioneers, Thisnext itself did not become a huge hit, although it is still around and through three rounds has raised nearly 10 million dollars in total in financing 7 years after its founding.

しかし、アメリカのビジネスモデルを中国に移植することで大きな成功をとげた中国のモノマネサイトたちと異なり、Buykee.com はみじめな形で失敗し、創業からわずか1年かそこらでそのドアを閉じた。Thisnext のビジネスモデルを真似した他の中国のサイトは、Buykee.com よりはましだったが、大半は必死にふんばっている程度で、当初思い描いた成功を見出したサイトは一つもなかった。

The ones that benefited from Thisnext’s trailblazing move are sites that improved on the pioneer’s model. Kaboodle became better at social networking, and it was sold for tens of millions of dollars back in 2007 to Hearst Corporation. Polyvore turned into specialist in sharing pictures, and the Mountain View startup claimed in 2011 that it was profitable independently.

Why did the roads diverge in the woods? For one thing, America has a much better developed infrastructure in regard to logistics, payment, and other prerequisites to make e-commerce successful. In addition, Americans are used to using their credit cards, and after a decade or so of experience, are very adept at shopping online. In this sense, America was ripe for social commerce, for it is merely a layer atop of a mature market.

China, by contrast, lacks these things, so from hindsight it was not a surprise that pioneers like Buykee.com failed. When the infrastructure is not there, building a social shopping site is akin to building sand castles.

なぜ道は森の中で分かれてしまったのか？　一つには、アメリカには物流や決済等、ECを成功させるためのインフラがはるかに整っていた。また、アメリカ人はクレジットカードを使うことに慣れており、約10年の経験を経て、オンラインショッピングの習熟していた。こうした点において、アメリカはソーシャルコマースに向けて熟していた。それは成熟した市場の上に単に1枚かぶせたに過ぎないからだ。

一方中国は、これらを欠いていた。今となって振り返ってみれば、Buykee.com のような先駆者が失敗したのは驚きでも何でもなかった。インフラがそこにない時、ソーシャルショッピングサイトを作るのは、砂の城を作るようなものだ。

However, to quote Bob Dylan, the times, they are a-changing, or at least many are hoping so. Taobao has done much to make people get used to shopping online, and now China’s e-commerce foundation is relatively more developed. At this point in time as Mogujie and Meilishuo are thriving with more similar services to expect, even Buykee.com is making a comeback. The site announced in last month it was ready to re-launch and claim its rightful place.

However, compared to its American counterparts, the Chinese social commerce sites are hugely dependent on one source: Taobao.Mogujie even boasts that its team came out of Taobao, so it could offer user a better experience. This is all nice and dandy for these sites now, as working for Taobao is profitable. But in the long term perspective, doing leg works for Taobao is good and only good for Taobao. For social commerce to take off, a variety of outlets is necessary, and so far in China that’s not the case.

Taobao which all these sites counted on launched a succession of its own approaches to social shopping to tap into the trend, which could be the major threat to services like Meilishuo and Mogujie. So at least for now, social commerce is still in the experimenting stage, at least in China.

55Tuan Taking over Ganji Group Buying Operation

Ganji.com, the Chinese classified site announced yesterday to cede operation of its group buying business to 55Tuan.com, another bigger player in the market.

The move shouldn’t be a big surprise and definitely doesn’t come out of blue since earlier last month, the Beijing-based company was rumored to cut off its group buying arm. Though Yang Yonghao, founder and CEO of Ganji later rebuffed the claim saying the business would be retained while some staff would be transferred to serve its new short accommodation service Mayi.com, a focus shifting in its product lines.

55Tuan、Ganji の共同購買事業を買収

中国の案内広告サイト Ganji.com は昨日、共同購買事業を 55Tuan.com に譲渡すると発表した。55Tuan.com は共同購買ビジネスではさらに規模が大きい。

この動きには大きな驚きはなく、晴天の霹靂ではまったくない。先月前半、この北京本社の企業がその共同購買部門を閉鎖するという噂が流れていたからだ。Ganji の創業者でありCEOでもある Yang Yonghao はその噂を否定し、短期賃貸住宅の新規事業である Mayi.com に何名かのスタッフを移転させる間は事業を当面継続させると語っていた。注力する事業が変化してきているのだ。

Neither Ganji nor 55Tuan elaborates how the tie-up works exactly. Will there be any upcoming downsizing, or how they share the revenue or else. And although the two deemed it as a “strategic cooperation”, but it didn’t totally rule out the possibility that 55Tuan might want to outright buy out the business.

A report out lately by Tuan800.com, the group buying market observer, Ganji group buying business made it to the Top 10 Chinese group buying services by sales with a transaction volume of RMB 47.2 million in January of this year, but came in 10th in the list, lagged behind its arch rival 58’s group buying business (8th, RMB 75.5 million).

As Ganji is selling off relatively irrelevant business, 58, the arch rival of Ganji actually implied that it would step up the daily deal business with more resources.

In last year’s group buying frenzy, numerous Chinese Internet companies flocked into the market, including Ganji, 58, 360buy, Dianping and even portal sites like Sohu and Sina. As the so-called winter came and many group buying services are struggling, we can expect to see more mergers in the market.

Augmented Reality Helps Eye Doctors

Many augmented reality (AR) applications have been used in marketing and promotional campaigns to add a ‘cool’ factor. But AR indeed has many more far reaching and practical use cases. The medical and educational world can now utilize AR to quickly see and understand very detailed human body muscles. I can imagine many schools and hospitals using cost effective AR technology to teach doctors in training to make learning more interactive.

A company called ARworks has prepared a scientific AR application for Top Gear Promotions in the United Arab Emirates, to demonstrate the working of Rabinizumab, an eye medical procedure developed to cure certain kinds of eye dysfunctions on a virtual eyeball.

The app runs on iOS and Android and was specially made for eye professionals to see how the medical procedure of a syringe being inserted into eyeball heals the root of the problem.

ARworks という企業は、科学的なARアプリをUAEの Top Gear Promotions のために開発した。これは、ある種の眼球機能不全を治すために開発された眼科の治療法の一つである Rabinzumab の動きを仮想眼球上で実演するためのものだ。

アプリは iOS とアンドロイド上で動き、注射器を眼球に挿入する医療行為でどのように問題の根本原因が治癒していくのかを眼科医に見せるために特別に作られた。

The AR app uses marker based technology, the simplest form. The virtual procedure shows the eyeball in full then half disappears. Then you can see the blurry effects of the eye disorder. The syringe in injected and the fluid released and the healing starts, showing a healthy eye. The animation can be played continuously or step by step.

ARアプリは最も簡単なマーカーベースの技術を使っている。仮想の治療では全眼球を最初に見せ、後に半分が消える。そして、眼球の不調により視界がぼんやりしてくる。注射針が挿入され、液体が流し込まれ、治療が始まると、健康な目が表示される。アニメーションは、続けて或いは段階ごとに表示することができる。

The interesting part is seeing how people with the disease see the world that is with blurry black blotches a very uncomfortable and frustrating problem I am sure. This is demonstrated as a virtual layer on top of the iPad. But after the syringe injects the medicine, the dark spotty layer on the iPad starts to become clearer and you can see how the procedure instantly helps sufferers.

The solution was made with Unity, and the Qualcomm AR plug in, within 2 weeks, for TGP (Top Gear Promotion), one of the biggest event and exhibition Management Company in the Emirates.

China Mobile to Launch 4G LTE in Hong Kong Next Week

China Mobile (NYSE:CHL; HKG:0941) has announced that it’ll launch its 4G mobile data service over the border in Hong Kong starting next week. The 100 MBps next-generation LTE will start on April 25th, and will likely come with deals on new 4G smartphones – though China Mobile has not yet named any devices.

While China Mobile is the world’s largest mobile telco in terms of users – and the market leader in mainland China – it is a relative newcomer to the SAR of Hong Kong, where it’s behind the four other carriers. They are, in descending order of subscribers, Hutchinson’s 3, Telstra’s CSL, PCCW, and SmarTone-Vodafone.

The gradual move to 4G will be an opportunity to seize customers from rivals, presuming that Hong Kongers feel the need for pricier 4G monthly data packages, and if the available phones are attractive enough.

China Mobile’s press release from its HK subsidiary explains that the full rollout of LTE will take some time:

By the end of 2012, CMHK plans to scale up its 4G LTE coverage to a level on par with its current network, while indoor coverage will be up to 80 percent.

Director and CEO at China Mobile Hong Kong, Sean Lee, added:

We are extremely optimistic about the development of 4G LTE technology. More and more operators are turning their eyes to 4G LTE. Mobile device makers indicate that up to 20 4G smartphone and tablet products will be launched in 2012, which is a key reason to believe that 4G will be picking up faster than 3G.

He also told Bloomberg that a “total of 10 4G phones will become available for customers this year,” but without naming any brands, or specifying if they might be iOS, Android, or Windows Phone.

TechNode Ideas MeshUp Workshop, Saturday May 5th: Create a Mobile App to Make Life Easier in China

Sometimes while walking around Beijing on a nice sunny day, a bright startup idea pops into our minds. We then start to think how cool it would be, what it would look like, how much money you could make and if you could be the next Instagram that sells to a Facebook for $1 Billion! But after some time, the idea starts to fade and eventually it amounts to lost brain energy and potentially a future “I thought of that!” moment.

晴れた日に北京をぶらぶら歩いてると、素晴らしい新事業のアイディアがひらめくことがある。すると我々は、それがどんなにかっこいいか、見た目はどんな風か、いくら稼げそうか、そしてフェースブックに10億米ドルで買収されたインスタグラムの第二号になれるか等を考え始める。でも、少し経つとアイディアは色あせ始め、せいぜい脳ミソのエネルギーの無駄遣いとなり、後に「あれは僕がもっと前に思いついてたのに！」と叫ぶ結果となる程度だ。

But what if there was a forum or workshop to share these ideas, bounce them around with like minded entrepreneurs’ and see how far you can take it into reality? That’s why instead of hosting another keynote speech/panel discussion we are experimenting with a workshop called ‘Ideas MeshUp Workshop’.

Held at Big Bang Café in Guomao, a start-up co-working space, the day will run like this. Firstly, Peng Ong, Partner of GSR Ventures and former serial entrepreneur and co-founder of Match.com and Interwoven (NASDAQ:IWOV) will give short presentation about his journey as an entrepreneur. Then it’s time for the fun to begin, with the interactive workshop.
