According to Zhen Hoe Yong, co-founder of Fulfilled, the service aims to help individuals develop a set of habits that will add up to a healthier lifestyle. Ultimately, it’s about creating self-reliance.

“While gyms often want to keep you on the membership program, we’ll be happy if one day you find you don’t need the app anymore,” he says.

fattofitYong’s partner-in-crime is Dionis Chiua (pictured right). Both were schoolmates at the National University of Singapore, and they’ve worked on a few projects together, including a social media conference and a social journaling website.

Chiua is also one of three coaches at Fulfilled. They’re focused on helping users lose weight and tone up, and were selected based on having gone through the process and understanding what it takes to go from flabby to fit. The coaches are working pro-bono for the time being, but expect to be compensated once traction picks up.

Both founders had the idea for an app after seeing friends who were unhappy with their appearance, and had tried out various diets and workouts to no avail. Yong says:

They would either not see results, or rebound in weight shortly after they could not keep up with the unsustainable diet. In the end, they ended up blaming their own self-control and believing that it was pointless and impossible.

What Yong and Chiua concluded was that their friends lacked a proper structure to rely on. Fulfilled is designed to provide that, drilling users on the basics, clearing misconceptions, and giving social support.

The hands-on approach is not as scalable as other and apps and services, but it might produce better results for users since they’re required to commit more time and money. The startup has secured some angel funding to see if it can build a sustainable business.

Launched just this week, Fulfilled is available in Singapore on the web, iOS, and Android.

Samsung and LG both had 105-inch UHD 4K TVs with 21:9 aspect ratios on display at CES this year, but both were just conceptual prototypes. Singapore Red Cross gamifies blood donations with new app

Blood donation shortages have been a problem everywhere for years. To raise awareness, typical methods include driving blood donation trucks around the city, pop-up donation stations at offices, sharing emergency notices via social media, and more.

But this is 2014, which means there has to be more innovative ways to drive blood donation awareness. Red Cross Connection, a mobile app by the Singapore Red Cross was created to do just that.

献血不足はここ何年にも渡って場所を選ばず問題になっている。その意識を高める典型的な方法は、献血車を街のいたる所に走らせたり、会社内の期間限定の献血ブース、ソーシャルメディアでの緊急通報の共有等があった。

しかし、今は2014年だ。ということは、献血への意識を高める、より革新的な方法がある。Red Cross Connectionというシンガポール赤十字社のモバイル用アプリがそれを実現するために開発されたのだ。

Quietly rolled out near the end of last year, Red Cross Connection crowdsources help from its users to drive blood donations in times of need. This is similar to the Indian Blood Donors app. Once installed, users create their profile and indicate their blood type. When blood supplies run low, users would receive Blood Alerts through the app – indicating the specific blood type needed, with a map function to find the nearest Red Cross center for them to make a donation.

Even if users cannot donate the blood themselves, they can still help by sharing the alert with their Facebook friends.

昨年の終わりごろにひっそりと初披露されたRed Cross Connectionは、必要な時にそのユーザからの献血を促進するようクラウドソーシングという形で援助してもらうというものだ。これはインドの献血アプリと同様のものである。アプリをインストールすると、ユーザはプロフィールを作成し、各自の血液型を表示する。血液の供給量が低減すると、ユーザはアプリからのBlood Alertsという警報を受信する。この警報には、必要な血液型と、献血できる最寄りの赤十字センターを見つけるマップ機能がついている。

ユーザ自信が献血できない場合にも、この警報をFacebook上の友人等と共有することで、援助することができるのだ。

Rewarding blood donors

The theme of the campaign is Release the Hero Within You with the tagline: “If only one percent more people in Singapore donated blood, shortages would disappear”.

With that in mind, when a user donates blood, the app allows them to check in their donations by scanning a QR code on posters at the blood centers or mobile blood donation drives. Then, as a reward, an augmented reality video thanks the donator for their selfless and heroic acts.

Red Cross Connection also has merchant and partner tie-ups. This means active members may be rewarded with special offers and discounts in their app inbox.

The Singapore Red Cross app might get adapted to other countries if it proves successful in Singapore.

Help Malaysian taxi app MyTeksi collect toys and books for needy kids

Citizens of Klang Valley can pledge books and toys using the MyTeksi app, which will be ferried by taxis to its HQ. Participate to give back

MyTeksi, a Malaysian mobile taxi app, has collaborated with non-governmental organisation Science of Life Studies 24/7 (SOLS 24/7) for an initiative aimed at providing English books and used toys to needy children in rural communities.
