Enter Verbase, a new player in the general search engine space hailing from Hong Kong. Verbase uses Yahoo’s API to gather results, and sorts them using a custom algorithm created by founder Antoine Sorel. He calls it a “user-ranking” algorithm, which basically means results are sorted based on users’ level of engagement rather than just popularity and keyword relevancy. On Google, Sorel says, “You’ll see the most popular results at the top, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they have the best information.” For example, Verbase will keep track of time spent and the level of interaction with a website instead of just counting hits.

Can it be done?

The latest beta version of Verbase will be released on October 14. Sorel says the company plans to educate users through marketing and a PR campaign in order to gain more traction. He says the target audience is mainly US general search users who are “frustrated with search results.” But are they frustrated enough to make a switch? With Google and other search engines embedded in our websites, browsers, and phones, Verbase faces a steep uphill battle.

LeTV boosts original video content with acquisition of production studio for $260 million

Chinese video portal LeTV (SHE:300104) announced today it has acquired Flower TV (花儿影视) for nearly RMB 1.6 billion ($261 million). We at Tech in Asia had never heard of Flower TV before, but it transpires it’s an award-winning TV production studio. Flower TV has been behind several popular Chinese TV series (website in Chinese) over the years.

The acquisition makes sense for the Hulu-like LeTV, which has been creating original content for its users. Its subsidiary LeVision partly produced and distributed this year’s controversial Tiny Times and Tiny Times 2 movies. The first of that movie series streamed for free on LeTV this summer.

今回の獲得は、Huluの様にユーザ向けオリジナルコンテンツを作成してきたLeTVにとって、価値のある選択であると言える。子会社のLeVisionは今年話題を呼んだ映画、Tiny Times とTiny Times 2　を一部プロデュース、配信しており、今夏、映画の１作目は無料でLeTVに上映された。

Uber teams up with messaging app to get more Korean couples in its cars

Uber launched in South Korea this summer, and this week the fancy car booking service is trying out its first bit of social marketing in the country. Uber has teamed up with Korean startup Between – which makes a messaging app for couples – to offer the chance for couples to win a free ride.

Chan Park from the Uber Korea team tells us that the promo is being offered to over one million registered Korean users of Between. The promo appears in the ‘event box’ section of the Between apps for iOS and Android, and runs until the end of this week:

Uber韓国チームのチャン・パク氏は、このプロモーションが１００万人以上ものBetween登録者に提供されると述べた。このプロモーションは、IOS、Android向けBetween アプリの「イベントボックス」欄に記載され、今週末まで続くこととなっている。

Both Between and Uber are also promoting the tie-up via social media in the country.

Chan reckons that Uber and Between are a good match in terms of the “demographic and synergies between the two companies.” This pilot promo could be rolled out in other markets later.

Uber is now active in five cities across Asia. As for Between, it has over 900,000 active users around the world.

The funding amount will depend on the stage and industry of the startup. It could invest in seed stage startups who may not have a company established, as long as the founding team is experienced.

It would pump more money into biotech and cleantech companies, which require more funding than mobile and IT startups.

The first KUVF fund was set up in 2007 with $45 million in its kitty. As of August this year, it has a portfolio of 18 companies. One of these companies is Aucfan, a Tokyo-based price comparison site which IPO-ed this year.

Taylor has an " on the road showcase " going on. I just learned of it today. The Taylor rep doing this show is the guy that usually answers my questions about the orders. It`s supposed to be at 7:00 PM tomorrow, locally here in Milwaukee, Wi area. He hasn`t responded to my emails and is not answering the calls as usual. The road trip would explain that. I did find out from Taylor shipping that two orders have shipped and expect that to be the 814CE and a 214. I`m going to try getting to the showcase, if possible, ( I also have a gig tomorrow, not sure the starting time yet ). Regardless, I should be able to contact him at the store as well.
