Other developments

Next week also heralds a milestone moment for Chirp, as the company shakes off its mobile roots and launches a Chrome plugin that will take its technology onto Macs and PCs via the browser. This will let users chirp webpages to their phones, an easy way of grabbing map URLs, phone numbers, or other information.

This is enabled through a just-announced tie-up with Arduino, an open-source computer electronics platform for hackers and prototypers. It means that Chirp encoders are available for the burgeoning Internet of Things industry, and they could be included in any number of objects in the future. “Chirpino,” as the service is called, is being released tomorrow (May 13) as a free download.

For now, Chirp can still be filed under “potential,” which is perhaps a little disappointing given that the first Chirp app launched three years ago now. Indeed, it’s still very limited in terms of what files you’re able to transfer between devices on mobile, though other common file types will be supported when the web-based version of the service comes to fruition.

Also, there is currently no way to download a file — offline access is enabled through caches within the Chirp app, but what’s really needed is full, peer-to-peer transfers that lets anyone download a file or document. We’re told that this is in the works, though no timescale was given.

The company’s first foray into licensing its technology via an SDK indicates how it intends to make money in the long term. For now, however, Chirp is exploring other conduits to ensure it has capital at its disposal. Today it opened a crowdfunding campaign through Crowdcube, and at the time of writing it’s already reached half of its target £400,000 ($630,000) goal. All funds will be used to support commercial expansion and develop the Chirp platform.

Meet TunnelBear

Available for Mac, Windows, Android, and iOS, TunnelBear has gained a reputation as one of the easiest, most user-friendly VPNs, amassing north of five million users across 179 countries since its inception in 2011.

The Toronto-headquartered company now has 18 employees — mostly developers and designers — and is entirely self-funded. TunnelBear is also profitable, the company tells VentureBeat, using a simple but effective means of monetizing and marketing at the same time.

If you’re a dedicated anonymous Internet user, you can commit to a monthly installment of $4.99 which gets you “unlimited tunnelling” on 3 devices. Or you can pay $49.99 for the year and get the same thing, while saving 17 percent off the monthly equivalent cost.

So who is using TunnelBear, and what, exactly, are they using it for?

The VPN debate

It’s true that people use VPNs to circumvent geo-restricted content. So, someone in the U.S. or France or Zimbabwe could crank up TunnelBear to watch BBC iPlayer, an online TV catchup service normally reserved for British TV licence fee-payers. And such circumventions have caused tensions between some of the big online entertainment companies.

Last year, it emerged that Sony might just be a little hacked off with Netflix for not being tough enough on those who use VPNs from around the world to access its content, even though they still have to pay to use it.

Shortly after, reports emerged via Reddit that some VPN services no longer worked with Netflix, though Netflix denied it was doing anything different from what it normally did to crack down on people channeling in using VPNs and other similar workarounds.

Though Netflix users are only allowed to watch the content that’s available in their geographic location according to its own Terms of Use, it’s generally accepted that using VPNs isn’t illegal in itself. That said, Netflix would likely be within its rights to close an account if it suspected someone was using a VPN.

In an interview with VentureBeat, TunnelBear cofounder Ryan Dochuk says that his company has faced no external pressure or door-knocking from Hollywood or anywhere else regarding its VPN services. “We haven’t encountered any negative feedback about TunnelBear — it really hasn’t been a focus of TunnelBear,” he said. “We’ve never been contacted by any content providers.”

While he says that the company doesn’t actively monitor what TunnelBear is used for, citing feedback from the users he adds that the main use-case for TunnelBear has been privacy-related. “We also have a large number of users in censored countries which use TunnelBear to connect to services like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube,” he added.

VentureBeatに話を伺ったところ、TunnelBearの共同創立者Ryan Dochuk氏はこう述べた。TunnelBearのVPNサービスにはいかなる外部からの圧力も、ハリウッドなどが門を叩くこともないという。「TunnelBearに否定的な意見は寄せられないですね。実はTunnelBearが注目されたことはないんでしょうね。」と述べている。「コンテンツプロバイダーさんから連絡頂いたことがないですし。」

And that is a key point here. VPNs serve as vital tools for those who live in strict regimes where access to online services are routinely blocked. Last year, for example, Turkey banned Twitter after allegations of government corruption circulated through the social network. The upshot? VPN uptake went through the roof.

The market

TunnelBear operates in an increasingly competitive space with options aplenty to protect your location and identity online. Perhaps the most well-known VPN provider out there is Hotspot Shield, though its free version is supported by ads and it doesn’t have a browser-based version.

Then there’s ZenMate, a Berlin-based startup that has hitherto pitched its main differentiating factor as being its browser-only status — it offers VPN-like features packed into plugins for most of the main browsers.

Now that TunnelBear has a browser extension too, it offers the best of all worlds. You can have it permanently enabled in Chrome to shield your Internet activity, but then all your other PC-based online activity remains normal. This saves you from constantly having to switch VPN settings on and off.

Perhaps one more factor in TunnelBear’s armory is its charming tunneling bear animations that permeate the app. Sure, some may argue that they’re gimmicky, but they are fun and perhaps serve to ease a new user into the VPN experience.

The platform will be available to select partners in late 2015, with launch expected the first half of 2016. Nimble has 10 employees.

“We want to provide access to professional animation tools,” Howse said. “The key learning we have is an ability to democratize access to the pipeline so anyone can create animations. We can follow it from concept to distribution.”

In that respect, the Nimble technology is not unlike Unity’s game engine in the video game industry and Apple’s GarageBand software for music.

For the Singapore market, we decided that Coach’s two main competitors would be Kate Spade and Michael Kors instead.
The reason being that Dooney & Bourke is not available in Singapore and Cole Haan is relatively unknown in Singapore, despite having a retail outlet at ION orchard.

On the other hand, Kate Spade is well established in Singapore and Michael Kors, though very new in the market (having just entered Singapore last November), is an up and coming brand and is fast gaining in brand awareness.

App Annie Acquires Mobidia to Push App Usage Intelligence Global

App analytics and data company App Annie is announcing today the acquisition of Mobidia, a leading mobile measurement company. This acquisition will accelerate the international expansion of App Annie Usage Intelligence by combining large app usage dataset of the two parties, and thus giving insight into the two billion smartphone users worldwide, according to a statement from the company.

アプリ分析とアプリデータ収集を行うApp Annie社は今日、モバイルデータ測定の大手・Mobidia社の買収を発表した。App Annieの発表によると、今回の買収によりApp Annieのサービス「Usage Intelligence」の海外進出がさらに拡大することになり、膨大なアプリ利用状況データを持つ2企業が合流することで全世界の20億人のスマートフォンユーザの動向を探っていくということだ。

Founded in 2004, Mobidia provides mobile analytics and metrics platform, helping clients to gain unique insights into mobile usage trends and improves their application discovery, recommendation and mobile advertising. The startup has received US$16.1 million in six previous financing rounds.

TechNode heard the deal is already completed a few days ago with a mix of cash and equity. Mobidia’s team of 30 joins App Annie, while Mobidia’s Vancouver headquarters will also become App Annie’s 12th global office, App Annie Canada.
