“Large-scale genomic information is accelerating scientific progress in cancer, diabetes, psychiatric disorders and many other diseases,” explains Eric Lander, president and director of Broad Institute. “Storing, analyzing and managing these data is becoming a critical challenge for biomedical researchers.”

Google and Broad Institute will collaborate on new tools “to propel biomedical research, using deep bioinformatics expertise, powerful analytics, and massive computing infrastructure,” according to a blog post earlier today.

Lesson 3: We need to question why most VC firms intervene in company decision-making in the first place, when their original decision to fund these startups was presumably based on how effectively the founders had been handling decision-making up to that point. Secret has proved this to be a bad strategy, clearly demonstrating that if the founders’ buttons are pushed hard enough, they may decide to simply walk, allowing the house of cards to come tumbling down. As we know, when this happens, everyone loses.

Lesson 4: Rather than blindly funding entrepreneurs within a VCs’ own circles — only to later learn that in many cases the product was poor and the founders were not leadership material — VCs should invest in startups based on two core values: 1. advancing a revolutionary product and 2. supporting the demonstrated expertise and clearly articulated vision of the company’s founders.

The VCs that helped Secret raise a whopping $35 million in funding included Google Ventures (one of the company’s earliest backers), Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Index Ventures, Redpoint Ventures, a number of angel investors, venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, and actor Ashton Kutcher, among others.

Yet despite the significant chunk of capital invested in the firm, the app’s popularity peaked after 10 months and then quickly declined. In a desperate attempt to turn things around, the founders redesigned the app’s interface in hopes that it would hold its own against its more popular competitors — messaging apps like Yik Yak, Whisper, and Snapchat — to no avail.

Analysis and Relevant Questions

Many investments have failed before Secret, and many more will fail after it. So what makes Secret different? Or perhaps we should ask what makes Secret an example that can illustrate what’s wrong with the current VC funding model? The answer is, Secret was blown wide open by this mass influx of capital. As Byttow put it, “Unfortunately, Secret does not represent the vision I had when starting the company, so I believe (the shutdown is) the right decision for myself, our investors, and our team.” Byttow’s declaration does, however, inspire a few questions:

Question 1: Could he have conveyed a hidden message in the above statement, implying that problems among the VCs were the reason his vision had veered so far off course? This question is valid since it’s fairly shocking that he and Bader had been totally unable to prevent the downward slide from such an innovative and promising concept in messaging to a complete shutdown of the company despite having received nearly $35 million in capital during two rounds of funding within a three-month period.

By rights, such generous funding should have been more than sufficient to allow the right leadership — with the right product — to revive a flatline, a complication far worse than the mere hiccup of declining traffic that caused an otherwise robust app to fail.

Question 4: Was cashing out $6 million worth of shares in opposition to a number of prestigious venture capital firms the founders’ fault? While one firm could easily make a mistake, would a number of firms combined be expected to make that same mistake?

Question 5: Was it right for the founders to cash out these shares? Probably not. However, Secret’s founders aren’t the first to have cashed out some of their shares. And while Secret’s scenario was unsuccessful, countless other companies would likely not have encountered any problems as a result.

BabyBus: Exporting Education Apps

Chinese education app developer BabyBus produces pre-school educational games or other formats of content, and distributes through mobile app stores and more recently app platforms of smart TVs. Since 2010 when the company decided to focus on mobile, more than 80 apps have been developed.

Tang Guangyu, founder and CEO of BabyBus, agrees with many Chinese tech entrepreneurs that digital content or apps should be offered for free and revenues will eventually be generated through, instead of premium offerings, cross-subsidies. Qihoo 360 is often cited as a successful example of this model that has monetized the user base gained with a free online security service through advertising, channeling users to third-party games and search marketing.

But different from Qihoo 360 whose major market is mainland China, BabyBus has been exporting its apps since 2011. While the cause that many Chinese app developers shift focus to overseas markets is they believe users of Apple’s App Store in many other markets are used to paying for apps or can afford, Baby Bus believes the aforementioned free model can work everywhere. But offering apps for free isn’t enough, Mr. Tang added, that you have to make sure the quality is the best as there’s little cost for users to switch to other free apps.

Content licensing and pre-intalls in internet connected devices are currently two revenue sources to the company. BabyBus has introduced investments from Shunwei Capital Partners, the venture capital firm co-founded by Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun, and TAL Education Group in 2013 and 2014, respectively.

Services exported overseas are available in nine languages. The company claims to have a total of more than 40 million users, with more than half in mainland China and over 3.5 million in other regions of the Greater China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau.

Its overseas expansion began from Japan and some Asian countries and regions as their content was considered more acceptable in Asian Cultures. All the apps by BabyBus are starring a pair of Pandas. The company believes kids not only in Asian but around the world like panda though it is native to China. BabyBus has hired staff from various continents to make sure content published in certain market will be acceptable with parents and kids living there.

The company hasn’t encountered any problems associated with content but with apps the distribution means. It was warned by the Federal Trade Commission of the U.S. (FTC) in December 2014 for it didn’t get parents’ permission before collecting geolocation information about users. BabyBus later found the geolocation information was collected by a partner analytics service and disabled it accordingly, according to the company.

China just 3D-printed an entire mansion. Here’s what it looks like

A Chinese construction company last weekend unveiled its two largest 3D-printed buildings to date. One is a grand-looking, three-story mansion (well, McMansion), and the other is a more utilitarian five-story apartment block. Both are made entirely by 3D printers creating layers of materials that form walls and roofs.

The giant 3D-printed homes are made by Winsun, the same company that cranked out basic one-story homes last year.

Investor interest in Bangladesh is growing steadily. Fueling this trend are startup events and weekend mentoring workshops like Startup Weekend – Dhaka and Innovation Xtreme. Bangladeshi professionals from the Silicon Valley have also launched co-working spaces like HubDhaka. There are also successful startups stories such as NewsCred and ChalDal, which received large fundings last year.

Attempting to build a startup in an ecosystem that perennially faces political chaos and economic instability is challenging. The country loses around US$200 million everyday when workers are on strike. This adds up to be quite a number of days in a year, according to the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

However, it is hard to overlook a market potential with the sheer numbers on display. It is estimated that Bangladesh will have 33 million internet users by April 2015 with 95 percent of the users accessing the internet via a mobile device. Bangladesh has 114 million mobile phone subscribers, and with 3G connections are expected to surpass 2G by 2020,, investors have a potentially huge market to tap.

As of now, though, the deal is likely still in the works, and far from a sure thing. An Alibaba spokesperson told Tech in Asia:

Alibaba Group sees great potential in the South Korean market, however the media reports on the ‘Alibaba town’ investment are purely speculative. Any disclosures regarding our investments will be announced through the proper channels.
