Well then, suppose my car-repair man devised questions for an intelligence test. Or suppose a carpenter did, or a farmer, or indeed, almost anyone but an academic. By every one of those tests, I'd prove myself an idiot. And I'd be an idior, too. In a world where I could not use my academic training and my verbal talents but had to do something intricate or hard, working with my hands, I would do poorly. My intelligence, then, is not absolute, but is a function of the society I live in.

じゃあ、僕の知り合いのその自動車整備士が知能テストの問題を作ったとしよう。あるいは、大工や農業従事者など、学問的ではない職業の人ならだれが作ってもいいとしよう。そうして作られたテストを僕が受けたら、自分がバカだとわかっただろう。実際、私はバカだったのだ。僕が受けた学問的訓練や言語的才能を使えないけれど自分の手を使って何か難しい又は厳しいことをしなければならないような場所では、僕はろくなものは作れないだろう。だから僕の知性なんてものは、絶対的なものではなく、自分が住んでいる社会の一つの機能でしかないのだ。
