このレターの筆者は購入した製品が本物かどうか確信でにていないようですので、私の一文目のほうがそのニュアンスが出ていると思います。またinstead of は前置詞ですが、目的語として前置詞句、副詞、形容詞を用いることが可能性ですので、私の原文のままで全く問題ありません。あえて冗長にする必要はないのです。またmanufactureを用いるなら過去形か過去完了形にするべきでしょう。
