New York is a perpetually restless place, a city forever rearranging itself, a people always on the move. If there is one thing in the city that is even more familiar than the sight of a new building going up, it is the spectacle of an old one coming down. It is not often possible to walk more than two or three blocks there without coming across the demolition experts at work with their implements of destruction, which are strangely primitive for such a sophisticated city as this. The destruction crews smash buildings to bits, with claws and rakes and rams and huge metal balls.

ニューヨークでは、永久に変革を繰り返し、人々が常に動き続けているように、休むことを知らない不眠不休の街だ。もし、ニューヨークで新築の建物を目撃すること以上に何か日常的に見られることといえば、古い建物が取り壊されている光景だろう。２ブロックか３ブロック歩くと、必ず解体専門業者が建物を破壊している途中の光景に出くわす。ニューヨークという洗練された都会の中で、それはなぜか原始的に思えてくる。解体業者はクロウと呼ばれる爪のようなものや、レーキ呼ばれる熊手型の機械、ハンマーの役割を果たすラムと呼ばれる機械、あるいは巨大鉄球を使って、建物を粉砕し、細かい瓦礫にしている。
