New York is a perpetually restless place, a city forever rearranging itself, a people always on the move. If there is one thing in the city that is even more familiar than the sight of a new building going up, it is the spectacle of an old one coming down. It is not often possible to walk more than two or three blocks there without coming across the demolition experts at work with their implements of destruction, which are strangely primitive for such a sophisticated city as this. The destruction crews smash buildings to bits, with claws and rakes and rams and huge metal balls.

ニューヨークは常に落ち着きのない場所、永遠に自身を再整備し続ける都市で、いつも忙しい人々のことである。この都市にそびえたちつつある新しい建物より目になじんだ眺めが一つあるとすれば、それは解体されつつある古い建物の壮観だ。この都市では破壊の道具を携えて作業中の解体業者に出くわすことなしに二、三ブロック以上歩けることはほとんどない。彼らの道具はこんな洗練された都市にあるものとしては奇妙に原始的である。解体作業員たちは釘抜き、土ならし、ドロップハンマー、巨大鉄球を用いて建物を粉々にするのだ。

落ち着きがないというと若干ネガティブに聞こえるので、休むことなく常に動き続けるとか立ち止まることがないとかがよりよいかもしれません。ちょっと長いですが
