Since the ancient time, visiting graves or praying to an altar by putting their hands is a general form of memorial service for Japanese people.
However, the more life style change into modern, the more people consider just graves and altar are not enough to pray for the death. People who want to keep their lovers' remains close, put their hands together as remembering the person and talking to them as their heart and soul is rapidly increasing as a free form of memorial service.
