それらの要素が放映当時の10歳代半ば以上の視聴者を中心に人気を博し、本放送終了後の1981年から1982年にかけて劇場版3部作の制作に結びついた。1980年代を代表する作品であり、1970年代の『宇宙戦艦ヤマト』 、1990年代の『新世紀エヴァンゲリオン』と並び、後々のアニメへ影響を与えた作品である。 なお、本作は後に続々と制作されていく「ガンダムシリーズ」と呼ばれる一連の作品群の第1作であることから、ファーストガンダムの異名で呼ばれることも多い。

Those elements is popular around the audience in the mid-10 or more years of age at the time of broadcast, and led to the production of the movie version trilogy between 1981 to 1982 after the end　of this broadcast. It is a major work which is a gold standard work of the 1980s, together with "Space Battleship Yamato" in the 1970's, "Neon Genesis Evangelion" in the 1990s influenced anime later on. In addition, because it is the first movie of the works of a series called " Gundam series" that will be produced one after another, it is often referred to the nickname of the first Gundam.
