English

Japanese had a tradition to give a doll as a gift on seasonal celebration day for children’s growth. We presume that people might have wished their children to grow healthy by given a doll, which symbolised human.

Costume dolls were believed to protect an owner from bad lucks by becoming a scapegoat therefore it was often given to a daughter as a wedding gift when she was married and left her family. Also it was used as a mannnequin to practice Kimono tailoring, as well as a toy for girls who had fun by dressing it up.
