インターネットサービスを作ってイノベーションを起こし、大きな成功をおさめたシリコンバレーのセレブ達。セレブたちの多くが次にイノベーションを起こそうとして、力を入れる分野がある。
それはインターネット業界ではなく、スマートフォンなどでも、エネルギー業界でもない。それは私たちの頭上遥か100km上空の「宇宙」を舞台にしたものである。

The celebrities of silicon valley. They started up some internet services and created innovations, and spectacularly succeeded. There is a field in which these celebrities are investing, for the next innovation they plan.
It is not the internet industry. Nor is it smartphones nor energy. It sets as its stage the outer space, a hundred kilometers above our heads.
たとえば、テスラモーターズのCEOでもあり、PayPalの前進であるX.comを立ち上げたイーロン・マスクは、今から10年前の2002年に、宇宙輸送を実現する米民間宇宙開発ベンチャーのスペースX社を起業した。
スペースXは2012年5月22日に無人宇宙船「ドラゴン」を搭載したロケット「ファルコン9」を打ち上げ、民間の宇宙船としては初めて国際宇宙ステーション（ISS）とのドッキングに成功した。
For example, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors, and a founder of X.com, a predecessor of PayPal, have founded in 2002 SpaceX, a venture space exploration company which plans to realize the dream of space transportation.
On the 22nd of May, 2012, SpaceX launched Falcon 9, a rocket that carried the Dragon, an unmanned spacecraft. Dragon became the first commercial spacecraft to dock with the International Space Station (ISS).
民間による宇宙事業の始まりを告げる出来事である。さらに10月8日、ドラゴンは再度物資をISSに届けるために発射された。アメリカ航空宇宙局（NASA）は、スペースX社と総額16億（約1256億円）で12回の打ち上げを契約しており、これはその1回目。
This marks the beginning of private-funded space ventures. Furthermore, Dragon was launched again on October 8th to carry supplies to the ISS. NASA had made a $1.6 billion contract with SpaceX for twelve launches. This was its first.
民間発の宇宙開発でも、莫大な費用がかかる。それを促進・援助する財団も存在する。ピーター・ディアマンディスが設立した『X Prize Foundation』がその代表だ。X Prize FoundationにはGoogleを立ち上げたラリー・ページ、セルゲイ・ブリン、マイクロソフトのビル・ゲイツのビル&メリンダ財団、Amazon.comのジェフ・ベゾス、ヴァージンのリチャード・ブランソンなど、インターネットビジネスの”成功者”が数多く関わっている。
Space exploration programs, even by the private sector, involve enormous cost. There are foundations that fund and promote these programs. A typical example is the X Prize Foundation founded by Peter Diamandis. Many "giants" of the internet business are involved with the X Prize Foundation, such as Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos, and the founder of Virgin Group, Richard Branson.
そのX Prize Foundationが運営し、Googleがスポンサーとなっているコンテストが、『Google Lunar X Prize』である。
The contest which is organized by the X Prize Foundation, and is sponsored by Google, is called the Google Lunar X Prize.
Google Lunar X Prizeは、2007年に開始された「民間が開発した無人探査機で月面を探査し、規定の条件をクリアしたチームに賞金が与えられる」という宇宙開発コンテストである。最高賞金として2000万ドル、期限は2015年12月31日だ。コンテストには、優勝候補のNASAと技術開発契約を結んでいるAstrobotic等、世界各地の国籍から25チームが参加しており、日本からも参加しているチームがある。
Google Lunar X Prize, started in 2007, is a space development contest in which "a total of $30 million in prizes" will be made "available to the first privately funded teams to safely land a robot on the surface of the Moon, have that robot travel 500 meters over the lunar surface, and send video, images and data back to the Earth." The teams have until the end of 2015 to get to the Moon. There are 25 teams from all over the world in this contest, such as Astrobotic, a potential winner who have a contract with NASA on technology development. There is also a team participating from Japan.
チーム名は『White Label Space』。『White Label Space』は月面ローバー（探査車）を日本の民間組織において独自に開発している。
The name of the team is White Label Space. White Label Space develops moon rovers in Japanese private organizations.
White Label Space（WLSJ）はクラウドファンディングサービス、Campfireにおいてプロジェクトを開始した。理由は先にも述べたように、宇宙開発には莫大な費用がかかるためだ。Google Lunar X Prizeで優勝できれば、約16億円もの賞金が手に入るが、ローバーの開発やそれを月へ送るロケットの打ち上げには費用がかかる。
White Label Space (WLSJ) started its project on a cloud funding service, Campfire, because, as stated above, space exploration is very expensive. If they win the Google Lunar X Prize, they will win a total of $30 million in prizes, but the development and the launching of the rocket that will take the rover to the moon involve substantial cost.
打ち上げるロケットの重量が大きくなると、それに伴い費用も上がってしまう。現在、White Label Space（WLSJ）のチームは、ローバーの小型化を目指して開発を進めている。今回Campfireで資金調達を行うにあたって目標とした金額の200万円は、小型ローバーのプロトタイプの製作費および一部の実験費に充てられる。
If the rocket's weight will increase, so will the cost. Currently, the WLSJ team is developing lightweight rovers. The target sum of ¥2 million in fundraising on Campfire will be used to produce prototypes of the lightweight rover, and for some of the experiments that the WLSJ team will conduct.
