同じ内容に相当する語であれば、名詞よりも動詞を、また、受動態よりも能動態を使う。継続的な適用可能性のある結果や引き出された結論を記述する際には現在時制を使う。操作された特定の変数や行った試験を記述する際には過去時制を使う。一人称よりも三人称を使う。本質的な情報を含まない紋切り型の文やフレーズは避ける（例「関連が論じられている」や「〜という結論に達した」など）。
