Robots are being used today to do tasks that are too dirty, dangerous, difficult, repetitive or dull for humans. Most them are industrial robots used in factories. Since the late 1950s, robots have been used for the jobs in factories that involve repeating the same action over and over again. People get tired or bored in such situations, but robots do not, and it's nothing for them to do the same thing thousands of times a day.
今日（こんにち）、人間にとって汚すぎ、危険すぎ、難しすぎたり、繰り返しが多すぎるような作業をするには、ロボットが使われている。ほとんどは、工場で使われている産業用ロボットである。ロボットは、1950年代後半より、同じ作業を何度も繰り返すことを伴う仕事をしている工場で使われてきた。人は、そのような状況では、疲れたり、飽きてきてくるが、ロボットはそのようなことが無く、一日何千回も同じ作業をすることはなんとも無いことである。
Robots are also used in cleaning up pollution, exploring space, carrying out search and rescue operation, and getting rid of bombs. Bomb robots have an arm that lifts the bombs and puts them into a safe place. In places that have been polluted by germs, chemicals, or radioactivity, robots are extremely useful because they can where humans cannot go. In the early 21st century, domestic robots also entered our everyday life with the success of the robotic pet dog released by a well-known company.
ロボットは汚染浄化、宇宙開発にも利用され、また、探索・レスキュー活動や爆発物処理にも活用されている。爆発物処理ロボットは、爆発物を持ち上げて安全な場所へと移動させるアームを備えている。病原菌や化学物質、放射性物質などで汚染された場所では、人間が立ち入れない場所に踏み込めるロボットは非常に有用である。21世紀の初めには、有名な会社によって開発されたロボットペット犬が成功をおさめることで、国産ロボットが日常生活にも入り込むようになった。
Several manufacturers have contributed to this trend of domestic robots by producing robotic vacuum cleaners. Robots will doubtless become even more important in society as we become better at making them. It is said that they will soon become widespread in hospitals and perform delicate operations that a human cannot. Traditionally, dogs have been called "man's best friend" because of their important role in human lives. Robots may soon take the place of the dog as our closeat companions.
いくつかのメーカーは、ロボット掃除機を作ることで、こうした国産ロボットの流れに貢献している。ロボット制作技術の向上により、ロボットが社会においてますます重要なものとなることは間違いない。やがてロボットは病院で一般的なものとなり、人間に不可能な繊細な手術を行うようになるともいわれる。昔から、人間の生活において重要な役割を果たすことから、犬は「人類の最良の友」と呼ばれてきた。ロボットはいずれ、犬に代わって、我々に最も近しい友となるのかもしれない。
