You have no way of knowing how involved these projects might be. But you can set a standard that at the end of the year, the programmer will have written an average of 250 lines of computer code for every workday. This approach allows the programmer flexibility in the short term but a definite goal in the long term. If you meet with your programmers monthly, they can evaluate with you if they are on a pace to average that much production. They can pick up the pace or find ways to improve their productivity.
