•Adopt and adapt. A criticism that has often been made of Microsoft is that the company is not a great innovator, and simply raids the ideas of others. But there is no question that the company is good at recognizing the commercial potential of ideas and marketing them.
•Speak the language. Gates spoke the language of computer programmers. It was one of his great strengths as a leader and also one of his great weaknesses. Talking to fellow techies gave him an open channel of communication which allowed him to inspire Microsoft employees to greater heights. On the negative side, however, his nerdy vocabulary and directness made him seem inarticulate at times when trying to communicate with a wider public.
