Nitsu-Koya Tunnel (Abandoned Road)

The road connecting Fukushima City of Fukushima Prefecture and Yonezawa City of Yamagata Prefecture was opened in 1881and named the Bansei Highway by the Meiji Emperor.

Nitsu-Koya Tunnel (384m) is one of two tunnels along the Bansei Highway.

It was expanded in 1934 (Showa period year 9) to allow cars to use it too.

In 1966 (Showa period year 41), a new tunnel at a different location was opened to allow traffic even in heavy snow, thus ending the use the highway.
