Thank you for your email to Laura regarding some queries in your return. If you can please help me with the following information I can get your questions resolved as quickly as possible.
You have mentioned that some items should be zero rated, the items in question are language course books with an accompanying CD. We need to know whether the CD can be used as a standalone item or whether it is essential to have the book? the answer to this question will depend on the amount of VAT charged.
All EUR transactions were converted into GBP as we submit the Return in GBP.
With regard to your other points raised, HMRC have stated that Import VAT can only be reclaimed when we have a C79, no other document (inc. C88) will be officially accepted. We can try to reclaim using other docs, i.e. C88’s, but it is at HMRC’s discretion whether they would accept these, (assuming the VAT Return was audited and we had to provide evidence for VAT Reclaim / offset request (box 4 against box 3), otherwise we could (on your instruction) include C88’s on the VAT Return to reclaim the paid Import VAT (and hope HMRC don’t come auditing as they may reject and result in you having to pay more VAT to compensate for C88 values which should not have been reclaimed initially)
