Mainichi App Preserves Newspaper Special Editions on the iPad
It’s always encouraging when we see modern technology being used to preserve important things from the past. A few months back we wrote about Japan’s Samurai Art application, which was used to present a 20 meter long scroll on the iPad.
毎日新聞社の号外がiPadで閲覧可能
現代技術で過去の大切なものが保護されるのは本当に良いことである。数ヶ月前、iPadで長さ20メートルの絵巻物を紹介する日本のサムライアートアプリについてお伝えしている。
A new collaboration between Mainichi Shimbun and Excite Japan is doing something similar, presenting special editions of the newspaper from all the way back in the Meiji and Taisho eras. These ‘extras’ or Gogai include accounts of important historical events like the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War and the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923.
Besides the special editions, there are a number of old photographs included with the application as well. There are 15 from the Meiji period and eight from the Taisho period.
今回は、似たような試みだが、毎日新聞社とエキサイトジャパンの新たな提携で、明治、大正時代にまで遡る新聞の号外編を紹介するものだ。これらの号外編には、日露戦争の勃発や1923年の関東大震災など歴史的に重要な事件についての記事がある。
このアプリには、号外編以外にも昔の写真も数多く紹介されている。明治時代からは15枚、大正時代からは８枚の写真がある。
The application itself is free, but only the content from the Taisho era is available to start. If you’d like access to the material from the Meiji period, it requires 1200 yen (about $15)
Ideally I’d like to see an application like this make all its contents available for free, especially when you consider its value in areas like education. But regardless of price, it’s good to see such material make the jump to digital form — hopefully ensuring that it will remain with us for a very long time into the future.

アプリ自体は無料であり、大正時代以降のコンテンツが収蔵されている。明治時代のものは課金制であり、1200円（約15ドル）の利用料がかかる。
教育的見地などから考えて、理想では全てのコンテンツが無料であればよいのだが。しかし値段についてはさておき、このような価値ある文献がデジタルに変換されることは素晴らしいことだ。これでおそらく半永久的な保存が実現したと言えるであろうから。
