I’m sold! When should I set up shop?
Most of the founders I spoke to believe that the best time to set up shop is after an initial seed round has been raised and the engineering team needs to be expanded. Otherwise, unless the whole team is relocating, most teams find it difficult to coordinate a distributed workforce especially when the product or service does not yet have “interesting” traction. Either way, it is important to not see this as outsourcing, but instead as the chance to develop an integral tech team, and the management – or at least the CTO – will need to spend a significant amount of time with the team to get it ramped up.
納得！ いつ開業すべきか
私が話をした創業者のほとんどが最初のシードラウンドが集まって技術チームを拡大する必要が出てきたらスタートアップを設立する絶好の機会だと考えている。それ以外には、全チームが移動するのでない限り、大抵のチームはメンバーが分散している状態で一緒に仕事をするのは、特にそれが製品またはサービスに「魅力」が見いだせていない場合には困難だと考えている。 どちらにしても、これをアウトソーシングととらえるのではなく、統合した技術チームに成長するチャンスだとみなして、経営陣、少なくともCTO（最高技術責任者）がかなりの時間を割いてチーム強化に努めるべきである。
When you do come, it will be of course much easier if you are part of a community such as 500 Startups, which has a thriving Taiwanese founder community, but others have found it productive to attend local meetups or hackathons to meet motivated and skilled developers. One of the newest initiatives looking to bridge precisely this gap is Taiwan Startup Stadium, a startup service provider with ample space and programming to help Taiwanese startups to expand globally and for global startups to come to Taiwan.

Looking forward
Overall, I’ve seen some pretty compelling success stories on the software development side of companies hiring key technical talent in Taiwan while serving other markets. Certainly, large foreign companies are starting to take notice. Mozilla and Cheetah Mobile, amongst others, have come to Taiwan to build engineering offices, and they are definitely exerting upward pressure on developer salaries.
これからの展望
全般的に、他の市場に奉仕しながらも台湾にて主要な技術スタッフを雇用する各企業のソフトウェア開発面でいくつか注目しないではいられないような成功例を私は見てきた。確かに、外国の大企業が注目を引き始めている。MozillaとCheetah Mobileは特に、台湾に上陸してエンジニアリング関係の事務所を設立したので、確実に開発担当者の給与体系を引き上げる圧力になっている。
Anecdotally, it feels that for hardware companies the fit is likely to be even better, and we have seen at least one portfolio company, the Japanese startup Whill take advantage of the wealth of knowledge in that sector on the island. The boom in startup activity worldwide has also left its mark on Taiwan and things are changing fast. It continues to be one of the most interesting emerging ecosystems that we keep an eye on here at 500, and you can always hit up myself or my Taipei-based colleague Cjin if you find yourself in the region.
個人的感想としては、ハードウェアメーカーとしては適合感がさらに向上しそうな感じがするし、少なくともポートフォリオ管理企業1社である日本のスタートアップWhillが台湾にてその業界で自社の豊富な知見を駆使するのをわれわれは見てきた。スタートアップ活動の全世界規模の上昇により、台湾にも足跡が残り、事態は足早に変動しつつある。それは、われわれがここで500にて目を向けている最も興味深い新興生態系のうちの一つであり続けているので、あなたが台北にいるのであれば、私自身、または台北を本拠地として活躍している私の同僚であるCjin氏に、いつでも頼み込んでくれればいい。
