ブラウンは直線目盛り機を用いて、当時としてはまったく信じ られないような０．００１インチロ盛りのスケールやノギスの生産を始めた。１８５１年のことである。
ノギスのアイデアはすでにヨーロッパにあったともいわれるが、加工できる機械がな いために実用化には至らなかった。
ブラウンは高精度ノギスの実現に非常な誇りを持っていた。
精密測定器の革命といわれ、機械工業製品の精度向上、「互換式生産方式」の発達に大きく貢献した。しかし最初の年にはわずか四台しか売れるなかったという。
Brown started producing unbelievable 0.001 inch divisions of a scale at that time and vernier calipers by using straight line graduated device.It was in 1851.
Though It is said that there was already an idea of vernier calipers in Europe, practical application didn't realize because there was no machine that could manipulate it.
Brown felt very proud that he could successfully create a highly precise vernier caliper.
It was said to be a revolution of precise measuring instrument, and it contributed to the development of precision of manufacturing industry and "compatible production method".But it is said that only 4 products were purchased in the first year.
