Hands-on with Xiaomi’s smart air purifier
Back in December, Xiaomi added an air purifier to its growing catalog of smart gadgets. It’s controlled by Xiaomi’s Smart Home app, which is available for Android and iOS (so it isn’t tied just to Xiaomi’s phones).
I recently bought one Mi Air Purifier to see how it performs. I’m not going to do a full review, which would require a scientific test alongside some other air purifier models, but here’s a quick hands-on.
Xiaomiのスマート空気清浄機を試してみた
さかのぼること12月、Xiaomiは拡大を続ける同社のスマートガジェットに空気清浄機のラインナップを加えた。これはXiaomiのスマートホームアプリ（Android版と iOS版がある）で動くものだ。したがってXiaomiの電話だけとつながっているわけではない。
私は最近、その性能をみるためにMi Air Purifierを1台購入した。ここで包括的なレビューをしようとは思わない。それには科学的な検証や他の空気清浄機モデルを試す必要があるからだ。だから以下にあるのはちょっとしたお試し記録である。
Firstly, why even buy one? In a word: China. While my lake-filled city, Suzhou, is usually pleasant – certainly nothing like Beijing and many heavy industry-based cities where a blue sky is more of a rarity than a norm – there are still enough off days to cause concern. Those are the days on which you imagine all those tiny PM2.5 toxins entering your lungs like those cartoonishly evil, spiky tar molecules in an anti-smoking PSA.
A breath of fresher air

The plastic feels solid. It looks like metal from a distance.
まず最初に、なんで買うのかって？一言で言い表すならば「中国だから」。私が住む蘇州は、青空を見れるのが稀な北京や重工業に頼っている都市とは全く違い、普段は本当に心地よい場所なのだが、それでも心配になる日が多々ある。タバコ反対運動を謳うう公共広告に掲載されている漫画風の毒々しくツンツンしたタール分子のような微小の有害物質PM2.5が自分の肺にどんどん入り込んでいくのを想像する、そんな日だ。

The Mi Air Purifier only has one button, so it calls out to be controlled by the app. That app shows the PM2.5 pollution levels for your area (which I presume comes from an online database, which pinpoints your location) along with your indoor PM2.5 levels, which is calculated by the air purifier itself.

This week I’ve noticed that the indoor pollution level tends to be just under half of what it is outside. So if it’s really bad out there, the air in your home is awful as well. Today, for example, it’s 110 out there (categorized as “unhealthy for sensitive groups”) on a scale that goes up to 500, but inside it’s 47 (“good”). Turning on the Mi Air Purifier quickly brings the PM2.5 level down even further, and it’s below 20 in less than 30 minutes.
The built-in pollution read-out in the Mi Air Purifier responds quickly. Moving the unit to another room causes the number shown in the app to rise as it detects dirtier air.
室内の汚染レベルは屋外の半分弱になることが多いと、今週気が付いた。つまり、屋外が本当にひどい状況であれば、室内の空気もひどいということだ。たとえば今日、屋外は500段階の110（「過敏な人には有害」という区分）だが、室内では47（「良」）である。Mi Air Purifierを起動するとさらにPM2.5レベルがすぐ下がり、30分未満で20より低くなった。
Mi Air Purifierに内蔵されている汚染度計は素早く反応して出力してくれる。装置を他の部屋に移動させると、アプリに表示される数値は汚れた空気を感知して上昇する。
The gizmo has three speeds, but usually it’s best left to the auto setting. The noise levels on the lower two speeds are fine, about the same as an air-con unit that’s not working too hard. However, the top speed setting is awful. Thankfully, you won’t really need the top speed setting unless the air is hideous, so I don’t think you’ll hear it too often. But listen to it drown out the music in my room when I turn it up from auto to max speed:
弱・中・強の3段階のスピードが選択できるが、通常は自動設定のままにするのがよい。弱・中なら通常運転時のエアコンと同程度の騒音レベルであり、問題はない。しかし、強にすると不快である。ありがたいことに、恐ろしいほど空気が汚れていない限り強設定にする必要はないので、耳につくことはあまりないだろう。ただ、自動設定から強に上げると部屋で聞いている音楽はかき消される。
Cheaper oxygen
This isn’t a review, so I can’t weigh this up, but the low price and the well-made Smart Home app, which is a hub for all of Xiaomi’s other smart gadgets, makes it an appealing buy for first-time air purifier shoppers. Costing just RMB 899 (about US$150), the Mi Air Purifier is a lot cheaper than models from well-established and well-regarded brands that are now marketing themselves heavily in China, like Blue Air and IQ Air. A few major names also make indoor purifiers, like Samsung and Whirlpool.
安い酸素
レビューではないので、これについて比較検討することはできない。ただ、Xiaomiの全てのスマートガジェットのハブであり、低価格でよくできたSmart Homeアプリは、初めて空気清浄機を買う人にとっては魅力がある。値段は899人民元(約150米ドル)であるMi Air Purifierは、Blue AirやIQ Airなど、評判が高く評価が確立されていて中国で大々的に売り出されているブランド製品よりもかなり安い。SamsungやWhirlpoolなどの有名どころも室内用の空気清浄機を製造している。
The only downside I can think of to the Mi Air Purifier is that you’d need three, four, or even more of these to keep an entire home purified. But that’s the same for those pricier models.
Other Chinese firms are pushing the price down as well. This one from software company Cheetah Mobile is the same price as Xiaomi’s and looks funkier. Or, this sort of homemade contraption does the job for just RMB 200 (US$33).
私の思いつく唯一のMi Air Purifierの欠点といえば、家全体の空気を浄化し続けるには3台、4台、あるいはそれ以上の台数が必要になるという点である。とはいえ、これは同価格帯の製品にも当てはまる。
他の中国企業も価格を押し下げようとしている。ソフトウェア企業のCheetah Mobileから発売されているこの製品は、Xiaomiのものと同価格でより格好いい。あるいは、この手の自家製装置ならたった200人民元（33米ドル）で空気をきれいにしてくれる。
