Songkran (water festival) is a new year festival in Thailand.

It's held in new years in Buddhist countries like Thailand, Burma and Laos etc.
Families get together for new years, they pay respect to elderilies by watering on their hands and foot. At temples people put pure water on right shoulder or foot of buddha in temples and pray.

Recently people water each other from pails and celebrate. Instead of watering from head, they water on right shoulder which is considered as pure part of the body or hands. Not just family and neighbors, people water strangers passing by to celebrate.
